Shane Caldwell's face lit up when he saw Vera Xavier, but his smile froze when he noticed Nathaniel Nathan sitting beside her. 'Isn't Nathaniel a soldier? Isn't he supposed to be busy? How does he have time to see Vera off?'
Their meeting on the train today was a genuine coincidence, but it left Shane Caldwell with complicated feelings.
Nathaniel, of course, had already spotted Shane. Though his expression remained unchanged, he was furious. He had never gotten over the fact that Shane had once written Vera a love letter.
Vera figured she should at least say hello since she'd run into an acquaintance—and a classmate, no less. But something about the atmosphere felt off. Just then, she heard Nathaniel say, "Isn't that your class monitor? Why don't you go say hi?"
The more Vera got to know him, the more she realized that not only was he not as cold as he seemed, but he also had a habit of saying the opposite of what he meant.
