"Hey, you can't do that!" the owner said, getting flustered. "We're just a small business, and you're trying to dine and dash! The young lady who just left was your sister, right? She said you would pay!"
Cara Preston silently cursed Vera Xavier. She had tried to get one over on Vera, but the tables had been turned on her completely. She said through gritted teeth, "I'll go home and get the money!"
"Here, boss!" Jack Judd pulled out a fifty and handed it over, saying grandly, "Keep the change!"
The owner's face instantly broke into a wide smile. He said to Cara Preston, "With a rich boyfriend like him, and you're still pretending to be broke? You're quite the kidder, young lady!"
Cara Preston's face flushed red. "He's not my boyfriend!"
Jack Judd said with a sly grin, "Wifey, that's not very nice of you. A moment ago, you were happily eating with your si— er, sister, but the second you saw me, you rushed right over to talk. If you weren't my wifey, would you do that?"
