At the tall officer's words, Hector Vaughn's mother instantly perked up. "That's right, that's right! There were so many people in that private room, and she didn't toast any of them. She only toasted our Hector. It's obvious she had ulterior motives! When she saw our Hector wasn't interested in her, she did something disgusting like this to spite him. It's outrageous!"
Thanks to his mother's outburst, Hector Vaughn suddenly seemed to find an opening. He hadn't stolen the bracelet. There were only two ways it could have ended up in his pocket. Either it had fallen in by accident, or that Sterling girl had deliberately framed him.
But what Hector Vaughn couldn't understand was, even if the girl was interested in him, he had been perfectly nice to her during dinner. They had no bad blood between them, so why would she frame him?
