The guests at the head table and those nearby had heard the earlier conversation. So when they heard Susan Sterling's words, they all glanced at Aurora Sterling, knowing full well who she was targeting.
Mrs. Sterling, of course, knew who Susan Sterling was insinuating about. Even though she had mentally prepared herself before arriving and felt completely justified, she was still furious. If everyone wasn't watching, she would have thrown all sense of decorum to the wind and given Susan Sterling a harsh tongue-lashing right then and there.
