"…His mom… she has something very important today, so she couldn't come out to play with him." Sierra Sutton lowered his gaze, offering a casual explanation before stroking the baby's little cheek to distract him.
"I feel like no matter what's going on, it can't be more important than celebrating the baby's birthday, can it? Besides, this is his very first one," Clara Grant remarked offhandedly.
Sierra Sutton just smiled and said nothing.
Clara Grant glanced at him. Seeing the helpless smile on his face, she thought, 'Did I say the wrong thing?' Her eyes shifted as she quickly added:
"But then again, people can't always do as they please. A lot of things are out of our control. I'm sure the baby's mom really wanted to be here for his birthday; she must have just been held up by something."
Sierra Sutton looked at her and nodded, saying nothing more.
