Dorothy Ellsworth's little face flushed as she stared with wide eyes. "Papa, you won't kill Dorothy and Mommy again, will you?"
Lillian Bancroft raised his hand and caressed her small face. "I won't. Never again. I'd sooner die."
"Then I still like you. I trust you."
To Ethan Ellsworth's and Chloe Marshall's surprise, Lillian Bancroft had only come for a quick visit. He left soon after, not even staying for the afternoon.
Back home, Ethan Ellsworth ran a bath for Chloe Marshall. Utterly exhausted, she took a long soak before lying down on the bed and sleeping the afternoon away.
It was already dark by the time she woke up.
She was starving.
"You're awake? Come on down for dinner." Ethan Ellsworth lifted her out of bed and helped her into her slippers. "From now on, unless it's a special occasion, I don't want you wearing high heels. They might be pretty, but they're not good for your feet."
She nodded.
He took her hand and led her downstairs.
