Bai Xiulan glanced at the alarm clock again. Seeing how late it was, she figured her daughter might have been asked to stay the night and wouldn't be back until morning, so she urged Old Mrs. Xu to get on the kang and rest first.
Old Mrs. Xu shot her daughter-in-law a speechless look. 'You think she's so easily swayed? That a few sweet words are enough to make her stay? She'd come back tonight even if it were raining knives.'
Just as she was about to speak, there was a sound from outside. Old Mrs. Xu breathed a silent sigh of relief. 'If she hadn't come back in another hour, we would have had to go out and look for her.'
"You're still up?" Xu Changqing asked as soon as she stepped into the outer room and saw her grandma tending the fire. "Brother Wei Min has already gone home, and I've eaten. You don't need to cook."
"It's ginger soup," Bai Xiulan replied, coming out. "Why are you back so late? Did Brother Wei Min go home alone, or did someone go with him?"
