Tuesday was October 10th, the Affiliated Hospital's usual payday.
Shortly after ten in the morning, Xu Ke, a young nurse on duty at the tenth-floor nurse's station in the Little Red House, kept secretly pulling out her phone to check it.
Fang Ai, a senior nurse who had just finished her rounds, returned to the nurse's station and said with a stern face, "No phones during work hours!"
"If I catch you again, there will be consequences."
Xu Ke chuckled. "Mrs. Fang, I wasn't playing on my phone. I was just checking for a text message."
"A text from the bank?"
Xu Ke chuckled again, implicitly confirming it.
After a pause, she added worriedly, "I didn't work much last month. If my salary is too low, this month is going to be tough."
Fang Ai asked with a light laugh, "You're a single girl. Besides food, rent, and clothes, how much could you possibly spend in a month?"
