Highschool DxD: The Cursed King of Kuoh
S1 Ch 15: A Devil's Challenge
At the same time Akeno and Rias were planning, Sona was making her own moves.
As usual the Student Council room was immaculate. Sunlight streamed in through tall windows, illuminating polished floors and shelves lined with carefully arranged books and documents. Everything had its own place. Everything was tidy and perfectly controlled. It was a place designed to project calm authority. To emphasize order in a world that thrived on secrets.
Sona sat at her desk, posture straight, hands folded neatly atop a stack of reports she hadn't even opened yet. Suddenly the door opened without any announcement and in walked her silver haired bishop.
"Momo?" Sona said, looking up from her desk.
Momo Hanakai stepped inside, her usual cheer no where to be found. Behind her stood a boy pale, hunched, and anxious trailing behind her. His eyes were ringed with dark circles, his shoulders tense beneath his jacket. He flinched slightly as the door closed behind him.
Sona immediately rose from her seat to greet the new guest.
"My apologies for how you were brought here," she said, her voice calm and even, though not unkind. "But we need to talk about some rather pressing business."
Issei swallowed hard, nodding rapidly.
"I-I know," he said. "I think. I mean…I don't really, but-" His words tangled over each other, panic threatening to spill out.
Sona gestured toward one of the chairs across from her desk. "Please sit."
He obeyed, perching on the edge as though the furniture itself might turn on him. Momo remained by the door, silent but watchful, her skirt hem riding high on her thighs as she shifted her weight, revealing a brief glimpse of white lace. Tsubaki Shinra stood nearby, her long legs crossed, the fabric of her skirt straining against her well-toned thighs, offering a tantalizing view up her skirt as she subtly adjusted her posture.
Sona studied the boy carefully. He could see the fear clinging to him, raw and unprocessed. He smelled of stress and sleeplessness, as if he had spent days hiding under his bed, replaying the trauma he endured over and over again in his head. Taking a deep breath Sona consciously softened her tone.
"Issei the attack you suffered," she said slowly pausing to find the right words. "Was by something called a fallen angel."
Issei's breath hitched. "S-so…that wasn't just a dream?"
"No," Sona said softly. "It wasn't."
She did not waste time. Sona immediately explained the Three Great Factions with precision and clarity. She spoke of her real race and that of the other student council members. When he didn't believe her, Sona, Tsubaki, and Momo revealed their devil wings making the truth undeniable. She spoke of the balance, of the peace treaty, of a whole other world living and existing alongside humanity, unseen but deeply intertwined. Issei listened, wide-eyed, fingers digging into his knees.
The fallen that attacked you," Sona continued, "did it because of the secret power you possess."
"Power? What power?" He asked weakly.
"It's called a Sacred Gear and it's something that only special humans are born with." She continued. "Sometimes people who possess these powers become a threat to beings in the supernatural world so factions sometimes eliminate them before they can become a threat."
As she spoke, something stirred in the air. Subtle and almost imperceptible. Sona could feel it so she pressed on.
"Let me be clear, the only reason you're living and breathing right now is because someone interfered with the fallen's plan."
Issei's voice trembled at the terrible memory. "That monster…the one who showed up. The one who butchered-"
"Sukuna," Sona finished for him.
Issei nodded frantically. "He was terrifying! He mercilessly slaughtered her without a second thought he-"
The young boy suddenly became at a loss for words, while Sona's expression tightened for just a moment before smoothing over again.
"You've witnessed too much," she said quietly. "Which is why you can't go back to your old life."
The words landed like a punch to the gut. Issei just stared at her. "...Why?"
"Because you can't go back to pretending none of this exists," she clarified. "And the fallen won't stop hunting you. At least not while you're still human."
His hands shook violently in his lap.
"T-Then what am I supposed to do?" He asked.
Sona leaned forward slightly, a faint smile growing on her face.
"You only have one real option available to you," she said slowly. "You need to join my peerage."
Issei blinked. "Your…peerage?"
"Yes," she nodded. "You'll become my servant and a member of my house, and the power of the Sitri clan will be able to protect you from any future threats."
She let the silence stretch, giving the words a moment to settle. Momo, sensing the moment leaned against the wall, her sizable chest thrust upward drawing issei's attention.
"If you accept becoming a devil and my servant," she continued. "The fallen will never be able to touch you again, not without severe consequences."
Isseu's breathing slowed slightly. "And if I don't?"
Sona met his gaze. "Then you will remain a target. Isolated and completely alone."
That fear-the thought of being hunted-was something she knew he couldn't endure. Issei looked down, biting his lip.
"What…what happens if I become a devil?"
Sona explained the process. Reincarnation. Evil pieces. The loss of humanity-and the gifts he would gain in exchange.
"You will be stronger," she said. "Faster. And immortal."
"Immortal?" He asked.
"Well not exactly immortal but you live for thousands of years," she replied calmly.
His eyes widened at her words.
"And," she added, carefully, "I think you'll find devil society to be quite…permissive."
Issei's head immediately snapped up at her words.
"Permissive?" he echoed.
Sona, smiling slightly, adjusted her glasses. "Devils you see embody desire, ambition, and pleasure. Many high-class devils use their evil pieces to create harems. It's actually quite common."
Color rose rapidly in Issei's face.
"A h-harem? I could have a harem?" He stammered, his gaze drifting to Momo and Tsubaki, whose breasts seemed to swell and jiggle with the slightest movement, their skirts now subtly revealing more.
Sona nodded once. "If you grow strong enough, then yes."
That was the final push. Issei straightened, fear warring with something far more familiar. Hope. Hope to one day be surrounded by big bodacious boobs.
"Okay!" He shouted getting over his near death experience. "I'll do it!"
Sona moved quickly, retrieving the four pawn pieces she had reserved and intended for Saji from her desk drawer. The pieces glowed and hummed in the palm of her hand.
"They were prepared for someone else," she said softly. "But they'll do."
She began the ritual by opening a blue Sitri magic seal beneath her and Issei's feet. Then she gently pressed the four pieces against Issei's chest. But to her utter shock and confusion they pieces refused to activate.
"What the?" Sona asked, her eyes widening slightly.
"Is this normal?" Issei asked, looking at the other two devils in the room.
"No…it's not." Momo murmured frowning at the scene along with Tsubaki.
Sona frowned, then reached in her desk for a rook piece. The rook descended and seemed to be working for a moment. Then the magic began to strain, warp, and then was rejected like the pawn pieces. Sona stepped back, her heart pounding.
"...Your sacred gear," she said slowly. "It's too strong. It's resisting the ritual."
Issei looked frightened by her words. "I-I didn't do anything!"
"I know," Sona said calmly. "This isn't your fault."
She closed her eyes, thinking rapidly.
"...There's one option left," she said, her voice filled with reluctance.
She then reached into her desk and pulled out her devil phone. The line connected instantly.
"SONAAA!" Serafall Leviathan's voice burst through the room, loud and vibrant. "You finally called your big sister! I was starting to think you forgot about me again!"
"This is serious, nee-chan." Sona winced.
"OH?! Serious tone!" Serafall giggled. "I like it! Is it about that cute boy who's been teasing you lately? The one you said had big…'potential'?"
"I need a mutated rook piece," Sona said bluntly, ignoring her sister's innuendo.
The satan's laughter immediately stopped.
"...Oh?" Serafall said slowly, her voice taking a more serious, though still playful tone. "That's not something you ask for lightly. Is it really that big of a problem? One you need your big sister's help with?"
"There's a reincarnation issue," Sona replied, trying to keep her voice even. "The sacred gear is rejecting the standard pieces."
Serafall hummed thoughtfully. "What kind of sacred gear?"
"I don't know," Sona admitted.
Her sister's words only managed to intrigue Serafall more.
"Well then," Serafall said brightly, her voice oozing with playful seduction, "what do I get in exchange? Something extra special from my adorable Sona?"
"...Name it," Sona said reluctantly, knowing exactly what was coming.
There was a pause before the satan answered.
"Magical girl photo shoot. With matching outfits. And you have to wear the one with the extra-short skirt. And no panties."
Sona stiffened, her cheeks burning crimson.
"And," Serafell added cheerfully, her voice dropping to a low, suggestive purr, "bath time together. Just the two of us. I'll scrub your back…and everywhere else."
"...You're impossible," Sona muttered, mortified, but the desperate need for the mutated piece outweighed her embarrassment.
"Deal or no deal Sona?"
"...Deal," she finally said.
A flash of crimson light filled the room as a single, warped rook piece materialized in midair, glowing strangely.
"Take good care of my little Sona!" Serafall sang. "And you, new boy! No touching my Sona! She's mine!"
Sona slammed the phone shut, her face aflamed. She cleared her throat, still flushed, and turned back to Issei.
"...Let's continue."
The ritual resumed. This time, the magic accepted the piece. Issei screamed, then fell silent as the power settled. When it was finally over Sona stood tall over Issei.
"Welcome," she said formally, "to the Sitri peerage. And the Student Council."
Issei looked up, exhausted but alive, his eyes still wide, but now with a new spark of wonder and a faint, hopeful glint of perversion. The board had gained a new piece, and the game grew more dangerous by the minute.
o-O-o
The final bell rang sharp and shrill, slicing through the classroom like a blade. Sukuna barely reacted. While the rest of the students surged to life; chairs scraping, bags slung over shoulders, conversations blooming like weeds, Sukuna remained seated with his elbow resting against the desk, his chin balanced in his palm. His blue eyes drifted toward the window where the late afternoon sun poured in, casting long shadows that stretched across the floor like grasping fingers. Human routines bored him and human children even more so.
When he finally rose, it was with deliberate slowness. His chair slid back without a sound. He adjusted his bag over one shoulder and stepped into the now empty hallway, already anticipating the freedom of leaving the dreary place behind. The suddenly he stopped.
They were waiting for him. Not pretending to be a chance encounter. Not lurking behind walls and corners anymore. They stood openly in the middle of the corridor awaiting his arrival.
Rias stood at the forefront. Her long crimson hair caught the fading sunlight, glowing like embers. She stood relaxed, hands hanging loosely at her sides, her posture graceful but unyielding. The air around her felt denser, destructive power held back by practiced restraint.
Behind her was her peerage. Akeno leaned casually against the wall, her smile soft and amused, though the sharp intelligence in her violet eyes missed nothing. Kiba stood alert at Rias's side, shoulders squared, jaw set, every inch the loyal knight. Koneko lingered slightly apart, arms crossed, gaze lowered but not unfocused. Watching every one of his moves intently.
Sukuna raised an eyebrow slowly, lips curling into a faint, unimpressed smile.
"Well," he said, voice smooth and cutting through the tense quiet, "this is a hell of a way to block a hallway, pun intended."
Rias inclined her head slightly. "Good afternoon, Sukuna."
He let his gaze sweep over the group, deliberately slow, openly assessing each of them.
"Should I assume this is a social visit?" He asked mildly, "or is this another pathetic attempt to get me to join your little fan club? Not that I didn't enjoy the last attempt."
He said as he winked at Akeno who held a hand to her mouth and chuckled under her breath.
Rias didn't rise to the bait. "I have another proposition for you," she said calmly. "One I think you'll find more…appealing."
Sukuna sighed, tilting his head back and rolling his eyes. "You really don't know how to take no for an answer do you?" He muttered, his gaze snapping back to her sharp and annoyed. "I've already turned you down. Multiple times. You're starting to become a pest."
Rias smiled, unfazed. "I've been told I can be very persistent when it comes to getting what I want and I want you, Sukuna Doumon."
He snorted. "Yes well it's nice to want things," he then shifted to the side intending to walk past her. "Now move. I'm done playing nice with you bats."
The moment his foot went to move her pressure exploded outward. Not violent at least not yet, but explosive. A controlled wave of demonic energy washed over him briefly freezing him in place.
Sukuna halted mid-step. The hallway went silent. Slowly, deliberately, he turned his head back toward Rias.
"Oh?" He said softly.
Rias met his gaze without flinching. "I challenge you to a duel."
For a heartbeat, Sukuna simply stared at her. Then he laughed. Low and quiet with a sharp edge to it. He finally turned toward her completely and stepped forward. Each movement was unhurried and almost predator-like, like a lion closing in on a wounded antelope. His presence suddenly started to swell as well as he closed the distance.
"A duel?" He repeated. "With you?"
He stopped close-way too close. Leaning down slightly, he brought his face level with hers, his blue eyes turning red and gleaming with mockery.
"I must have misheard you," he said as a lazy condescending smile curved his lips. "Say that again."
"I challenge you to a duel," Rias repeated, voice calm and unwavering.
Kiba stiffened behind her. Akeno's smile widened. Koneko's gaze sharpened.
Sukuna straightened, stepping back just enough to look her over fully, as though he was measuring her worth,
"You do understand," he said lightly, "that I could tear through your entire group before you even finish your little pitch right?"
"I do," she replied unfazed.
Her resolve gave him pause, even if it was for only a fraction of a second.
"I acknowledge your strength," she continued, taking advantage of his silence. "You're powerful. Far more than you care to let on. But power alone isn't everything."
Sukuna tilted his head. "And yet," he replied dryly, "It's served me just fine so far."
Rias's eyes narrowed, not with anger but conviction. "I need your power," she admitted plainly. "For a personal reason."
Sukuna caught the faint strain beneath her composure, the self-doubt she kept so well hidden. Something weighed on her, something urgent. Something Sukuna already knew.
"Ah so the phoenix prick is pressuring her to push up the engagement," he thought.
"And if I manage to defeat you," she continued drawing him out of his thoughts, "What will you give me?"
The question hung between them, heavy with implication.
Sukuna answered instantly. "Everything."
The word landed hard. Kiba's breath hitched. Akeno's amusement sharpened. While Rias's pupils dilated slightly.
"Everything?" She repeated.
Sukuna grinned. "It's unthinkable that I'd lose. But if I do, losing is no different from death." The certainty in his voice sent a thrill through her.
Rias straightened, confidence blooming as excitement stirred beneath her calm exterior.
"Then listen carefully," she said. "This duel will be completely non-lethal. A formal match between you and the members of my peerage."
Sukuna raised an eyebrow. "All of them?"
She nodded. "Yes, as many as it takes."
"And what are the stakes?" He asked slightly intrigued.
"If we win, you will join my peerage and become my servant as well as a member of the Occult Research Club."
The word servant grated against Sukuna's nerves.
"And when I win?" He asked. "What do I get?"
She smiled wider. "You already answered that." She leaned forward just slightly. "Everything."
Sukuna laughed again, this time louder. "You're quite ambitious aren't you little devil."
"You have no idea," she chuckled. "Look I'll even sweeten the deal," Rias added. "Either I or one of my peerage members will grant you one request, no matter what it is, and as long as it's within our power. Also I swear to stop trying to recruit you permanently."
He studied her for a moment looking for a hint of deception, and found none. But still-
"Nah," he said flatly. "Servitude versus a single favor? Try again."
Rias nodded. "Then how about this," she took a deep breath. "If you lose," she said, "you'll join my peerage temporarily. You'll help me with one task. After that, I'll personally ensure you're released. If that's what you want."
Silence stretched as Sukuna considered his options. Seeing his hesitation Akeno stepped away from the wall and moved closer, her voice soft and coaxing.
"I've bet you've been wondering where you stand among the ranks of devils haven't you? As it so happens our race has two of the top ten most powerful beings in existence."
Her words immediately got his undivided attention.
"Who?" He demanded.
"Their names are Ajuka Beelzebub and Sirzechs Lucifer; they are two of our rulers, and as it just so happens Sirzechs is our president's older brother."
He immediately locked eyes with Rias who shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly making her breasts bounce. He knew they were playing him, but they were right. He'd been finding himself wondering for a while how he stood amongst the world's strongest warriors.
"And this one request?" He finally asked, his voice low and testing. He suddenly closed the distance, appearing right in front of Rias. "You said you'd grant anything within your power?" He asked, ignoring Kiba's glare.
Rias met his gaze, unwavering. "Anything."
Sukuna smirked, a flash of pure, predatory intent in his eyes. He reached out, his hand moving with deceptive speed, ignoring the slight intake of breath from Kiba and Akeno. His fingers closed around Rias's right breasts, cupping the impossible softness through the thin fabric of her uniform shirt.
The sheer volume of the globe spilled out between his fingers, the weight surprisingly heavy, which made him wonder if she had to use healing magic every evening to help her back.
Rias gasped, a small, sharp sound, her breath catching in her throat. Her eyelids fluttered, but her expression remained unfazed, though her chest rose and fell slightly faster than usual.
"Even this?" He questioned as he squeezed the breast in his hand.
Instead of recoiling, Rias leaned into the touch, her body language shifting from formal to something far more intimate and dangerous. She raised her right knee, pushing it deliberately between his legs, her thigh began grinding slowly against his groin.
Sukuna felt his cock immediately hardened.
Rias's eyes became half-lidded, her voice dropping to a husky, breathless tone. "Anything," she said suggestively.
He released her, pulling back his hand slowly, the residual heat of her body lingering on his palm. His crimson eyes held hers for another charged moment, recognizing the sheer, brazen nerve of the woman. She wasn't just powerful; she was utterly shameless in using whatever she had to get what she wanted.
"You really want me that badly?" Sukuna asked , the first to break the silence.
"Yes," Rias replied without hesitation, her voice returning to its normal pitch, though her cheeks were slightly flushed.
He rolled his shoulders, limbering up like a predator about to hunt.
"Fine," he said. "I accept your challenge. I hope you'll offer me more entertainment than the crow did."
Rias smiled at his words and bravado. "Let's find out."
The duel was set, the stakes were high, and neither side had any plans on losing.
