Chapter 19 - The Frozen Depths

The volcanic heat of the Upper Mantle vanished entirely behind him, swallowed by a cold so absolute it settled into his bones before he'd taken more than a few steps. Frost crept along tunnel walls stretching into darkness ahead, and the silence here carried none of the restless energy the trolls' floors always had — only a still, patient weight that felt, if anything, worse than noise. His breath fogged faintly in air that hadn't existed anywhere above, and even Godfire's warmth felt smaller here, pressed thin against a cold that seemed to swallow light as readily as sound.

Silence dominated the frozen tunnels, complete enough that Azraeth heard his own heartbeat clearly for the first time in longer than he could remember. Then the frost-covered walls cracked apart all at once, and Wendigos crawled free of the ice itself, gaunt and impossibly silent, more descending from the frozen ceiling to land behind him without so much as a whisper of displaced air.

The first one was on him before he'd fully processed the notification, claws raking for his throat with a speed that gave no warning at all — no footstep, no shifting weight, simply there.

Indigo Colored Fire — Fire Protection

The shield caught the strike a fraction of an inch from his skin, and Azraeth answered with a burning counter that connected clean, the creature dissolving into ash and frost in the same instant. Two more dropped from the ceiling behind him, utterly soundless; Heat Sense screamed the warning where his ears had caught nothing at all, and he pivoted through both before they could land, Godfire scorching a path clean through emaciated flesh. A fourth lunged low, aiming for his legs rather than his throat, and he stepped through the strike rather than away from it, driving a burning knee up into its skull before the claws ever closed.

A fifth caught his forearm in a grapple, gaunt fingers locking with unnatural strength; Azraeth didn't fight the grip directly. He let it hold, using the anchor to swing his other leg up into a burning kick that folded the creature entirely, then wrenched free before the ash had finished settling. Heat Thickness dulled a stray swipe from behind that would have opened his shoulder, turning what should have been a deep wound into a shallow scrape he barely registered.

Indigo Colored Fire — Fire Booster

Flame roared around his feet, and he tore through the nearest cluster before they could fully surround him, ice walls shattering behind every strike that missed its mark. A Wendigo lunged from a fissure at his blind side; Foresight caught the pattern a half-second early, and he answered with a burning knee before it fully cleared the ice. They fought like nothing he'd faced before — utterly silent, endlessly patient, herding him toward the tunnel's narrower stretches with the coordination of something far more intelligent than mindless beasts. Three more converged from a side passage, claws raking for his back in perfect unison; he teleported clear entirely, reappearing behind the trio and ending all three before they'd finished registering his absence.

A Wendigo dropped directly onto his shoulders from an overhang he hadn't noticed, claws digging for his throat from above; Azraeth drove backward hard into the nearest ice wall, using his own body as the weapon, and felt the creature shatter against the impact before it ever tightened its grip.

A pack of six converged from every angle at once, and Azraeth dropped low.

Indigo Colored Fire — Mud Lava

Molten ground turned the frozen floor to churning slush beneath their claws, and half the pack lost their footing entirely, buying him the half-second he needed to end three before the others recovered. A frozen pillar exploded into shrapnel as a Wendigo drove clean through it chasing him, ice and stone scattering everywhere, and Azraeth used the chaos, teleporting through the settling debris to strike from an angle none of them could have anticipated. Two more emerged from a narrow side tunnel, coordinating a pincer he barely caught in time through Heat Sense's warning, and he answered by driving them both into the same weakened stretch of ice wall, the impact collapsing it entirely atop them.

Indigo Colored Fire — Stellar Pull

A compressed sphere tore ahead of him first, punching clean through a line of four Wendigos converging from a collapsing tunnel mouth, and he followed it immediately by expanding the ultimate into its full form as the pack's remaining numbers thickened around him, a colossal star blooming above the tunnel, gravity dragging ice and frost and Wendigos alike toward its burning center. Dozens were pulled screaming into the vortex at once, and Azraeth pressed the advantage while the survivors fought their own stolen balance, ending clusters faster than they could reform. A handful clung to the tunnel walls themselves, claws dug deep into ice, refusing to be pulled free; he abandoned the star's pull for direct strikes against them instead, burning fists finding purchase where gravity alone couldn't finish the job.

By the fight's later stretch, exhaustion had settled deep into every limb, the tunnel around him a ruin of shattered ice and collapsed stone. A stray claw finally opened a gash along his side; he pressed a burning palm to it mid-motion.

Indigo Colored Fire — Lava Heal

The wound sealed shut, and he drove the last of the pack into a final, desperate stand before ending them with a wide sweep of thermal light that left nothing behind but drifting frost and settling ash.

Azraeth descended deeper into the Lower Mantle, the tunnels narrowing and darkening with every floor.

Floor forty-two's two hundred and five Wendigos found him already reading their silence differently, Heat Sense mapping every soundless approach before it could fully close, ice pillars collapsing around a fight he now controlled more than survived. He no longer waited for the ambushes to land; he met each descending shadow with a strike already in motion, ending them before their claws ever found purchase.

Floor forty-three's two hundred and ten pressed with sharper coordination, packs splitting to flank from tunnels on either side; Azraeth met the tactic with Mud Lava thrown wide rather than narrow, catching both flanks in the same churning trap. A cluster tried to use a frozen waterfall as cover, emerging mid-strike from behind the ice sheet itself; he answered by shattering the entire formation with a burning sweep before they'd fully cleared it. Another pack attempted the same ceiling-drop tactic that had nearly caught him on Floor 41; this time Heat Sense flagged it instantly, and he simply stepped aside, letting them crash uselessly into the ice below.

Floor forty-four's two hundred and fifteen turned an entire frozen cavern to ruin around him, frost exploding into the air with every impact, tunnels caving in behind trapped clusters he'd learned to herd rather than chase. A Wendigo pack nearly caught him beneath a collapsing ice ceiling; he teleported clear an instant before the weight came down, reappearing already mid-strike against the survivors who'd triggered the collapse. Another group tried scaling the cavern walls to strike from above, claws finding purchase in solid ice; he ended their approach with a wide burning sweep that melted their handholds out from under them entirely. By the floor's end, he moved through the frozen dark with something close to the same quiet certainty the Wendigos themselves carried.

Floor forty-five's silence broke exactly as violently as the first had.

They pressed without pause from the first instant, silent and relentless, and Azraeth answered with everything four floors of frozen tunnels had taught him. Fire Booster carried him through the opening wave before it could fully surround him, burning strikes chaining directly into teleports that placed him behind clusters before they registered his absence. A Wendigo dropped from the ceiling directly above; Foresight caught it early enough that he simply stepped aside, letting it crash into the ice below before ending it without breaking stride. A second wave came low and fast, claws raking for his ankles in perfect unison; he leapt clear entirely, using the height to drive a burning heel down into the center of the formation.

A pair tried to flank him through a narrow ice crevice, banking on the tight space to force a single approach; Azraeth teleported directly between them instead, ending both with a single burning sweep before either could react to his sudden reappearance. Another Wendigo seized his wrist in a grapple, dragging him toward a cluster waiting to pile on; he let the pull carry him forward rather than resist it, using the momentum to drive a burning headbutt into the grappler's skull and break free before the others closed.

Indigo Colored Fire — Fire Protection

The shield absorbed three simultaneous strikes from a pack converging on his back, buying him the half-second needed to answer with a sweeping counter that scattered them into a wall he'd already weakened with an earlier strike. A frozen ceiling gave way overhead, ice and stone raining down in a collapse that took as many Wendigos as it nearly took him; he used the falling debris as cover, closing distance while the pack scrambled to reorient. Heat Thickness dulled a claw strike aimed at his spine into little more than a bruise, buying him the half-second to answer with a burning elbow that ended the attacker outright. A stray claw finally found his shoulder, tearing deep; he pressed a burning palm to the wound mid-motion.

Indigo Colored Fire — Lava Heal

The gash sealed shut, and he pushed forward without losing a fraction of momentum, driving the thinning pack toward a narrowing stretch of tunnel where their numbers could no longer surround him properly. A cluster tried to retreat deeper into the ice to regroup; Azraeth denied them the chance, closing the distance with a burst of Fire Booster and ending the retreat before it could become a second ambush.

The pack's remaining numbers gathered for one massed, coordinated charge, dozens converging from every tunnel mouth at once in a wave meant to simply bury him under sheer weight.

Indigo Colored Fire — Mud Lava

He spread unstable ground beneath the entire charging front, and a third of the wave lost its footing in the same instant, buying him three full strides of distance.

Indigo Colored Fire — Supernova

Violet-blue light gathered between his palms as the surviving Wendigos surged forward through the churning mud, refusing to be denied their charge. Azraeth held the compression steady, Fire Protection absorbing the first claws that reached him, Teleporting a half-step clear of a second wave without releasing what he'd built. The charge completed a heartbeat before the pack could close the final distance, light tearing outward and reducing the entire charging wave to ash and drifting frost in a single, silent flash.

Indigo Colored Fire — Stellar Pull

A compressed sphere tore through what remained of the densest concentration in a single blinding line, and Azraeth followed immediately with the star's full form, gravity dragging the last survivors into a burning vortex that left the tunnel behind it hauntingly quiet. A handful broke from the pull entirely, throwing themselves at him in one final, desperate rush; he met them with controlled, economical strikes, exhaustion burning through every limb by the time the last Wendigo finally fell still amid the settling frost.

Azraeth allowed himself a brief rest amid the ruined ice, breathing slow and controlled until exhaustion loosened its grip enough to move again, a shallow wound along his shoulder sealing shut beneath one last press of Godfire before he rose to descend further.

The next floor greeted him with drifting snow so thick it swallowed visibility entirely, the tunnel ahead reduced to shifting white and formless shadow, every step forward uncertain in a way none of the frozen floors above had been. The silence here pressed down heavier than anything the Wendigo floors had carried, absolute and deliberate, as though the snow itself were holding something back rather than merely falling.

Azraeth stood at the threshold, Heat Sense straining uselessly against the concealment, catching nothing but the faint, cold hum of the blizzard itself. He took one careful step forward into the white, then another, the silence pressing closer with each stride, and understood with quiet certainty that whatever waited inside that drifting white was patient enough not to need silence to hide — it simply hadn't decided yet whether he was worth revealing itself for.
