Chapter 55: Panic of the History Compilation Committee
Two "Campiones" have arrived in Japan in succession. It is important to understand that any God-slayer possesses power that completely crushes any mage. Even humanity's most powerful weapons can hardly compete with these Demon Kings; ordinary men have no power to fight back.
Consequently, wherever a God-slayer goes, all mages greet them with trembling hearts, seeking to please the "King." A single accidental slight that angers a "King" could result in this small island nation being obliterated by a casual strike.
Now, two such Demon Kings—beings who hold the fate of this island nation in their hands—had arrived at once. How could Kaoru Sayanomiya not be terrified? She immediately stood up from her office chair.
"Convene a meeting immediately!"
The news spread instantly. In less than half an hour, the leaders of all the key departments of the Tokyo branch rushed to the office without pause.
Inside the meeting room, a group of people was conducting a talk with grave expressions. Seated at the head was a beauty in men's clothing—with delicate features and a slender frame, she was a girl in the prime of her youth, yet she had already become the head of the [History Compilation Committee] branch office.
Everyone in the room discussed the situation with heavy hearts.
"According to the intelligence just received, King Orihara, who leads the Southern European magic associations, has arrived at Tokyo's Haneda International Airport with his two knights and Princess Alice of Europe," spoke Touma Amakasu, a middle-aged man in his thirties who served as the agent managing mages and sorcerers in Japan.
"Information regarding the oldest God-slayer is already common knowledge, so there is no need to repeat it. What I will discuss next is the data regarding the Seventh King."
Amakasu pushed up his glasses. Normally easygoing, his expression was now strictly serious.
"This King Orihara first appeared in Rome. He subsequently defeated the 'Black Dragon' Nidhogg—summoned by a cult—who in Norse mythology gnaws at the World Tree to trigger Ragnarok. Not long after, he defeated the 'King of Swords,' Salvatore Doni, who had gone to challenge him.
On his way to London, he defeated the three main gods of Greek mythology: Zeus the 'God-King,' Poseidon the 'Sea-King,' and Hades the 'Underworld King.' And just a few days ago, that King defeated the 'War God' Verethragna and Melqart on the island of Sardinia..."
A string of magnificent battle achievements was recounted by Amakasu, causing everyone in the meeting room, including the branch head Sayanomiya Kaoru, to turn pale. One middle-aged man was the first to break, clutching his hair in frustration.
"Sigh, in the past, these Demon Kings had no interest in our side. Now, two of them show up suddenly at once. This is going to be the death of us..."
Any God-slayer possesses the power to easily obliterate a continent. For this island nation, which looks like an ant on a map, they would only need to stomp their feet to sink it directly.
"Have the two Kings arrived in Japan?"
Sayanomiya ignored the mages who were sighing and venting their bitterness, asking the personnel responsible for monitoring flight statuses directly.
The staff member immediately reported: "According to the latest news, Marquis Voban arrived in Japan one step ahead of the new King. He has found a temporary residence in an old aristocratic mansion and hasn't made any moves yet."
"Perhaps he is plotting something," Sayanomiya murmured.
As the oldest of all God-slayers, people were impressed not only by his numerous divine Authorities but even more so by the wisdom he had accumulated over three hundred years.
Sasha Dejanstahl Voban is the oldest among the current seven Campiones. He holds the largest number of Authorities and possesses high proficiency in using them.
He has the strength to treat god-slaying as entertainment and is the arch-rival of Luo Hao.
A God-slayer residing in the Balkan Peninsula of Eastern Europe, he is the eldest survivor of his kind. Although called "Marquis," he was not born into a wealthy family. Born in the early 18th century as a parentless orphan, he was once so poor that buying a single loaf of bread a day was difficult, and he frequently wandered from place to place.
"Voban" was the name of a fierce dog kept by a Marquis in a territory he once raided; thus, he decided on Voban as his own surname. Though he appears to be an intellectual, elderly, and wise gentleman, he is actually full of wildness, possessing extraordinary physical strength and wolf-like agility.
He thirsts for battle and is shrewd but blunt in his dealings.
Due to his life as an orphan, he has no gourmet pursuits and simply views food as the act of "eating." He also enjoys athletic hobbies like heavy bag training, boxing, and muscle building. He likes to drive around on custom-made road bikes, engaging in "high-speed bullying of the weak," which he considers a bold act.
He claims to prefer wolves over dogs, feeling repulsed by dogs that obey and flatter, while liking wolves because they occasionally resist and are full of overbearing ambition. Because he is the oldest existing God-slayer, he possesses many Authorities.
He once held a ritual to summon a Heretic God, but the summoned god was killed and its Authority usurped by Doni before he could act.
Sayanomiya did not think she could play clever tricks in front of a God-slayer with three hundred years of experience. She could only instruct the local magic associations to treat this "Demon King" with extreme caution.
The air seemed to freeze in the room; the temperature in the meeting room felt as if it had stepped into winter. Everyone held their breath.
"Two Kings coming at once... what did our little island nation do to deserve this?"
Even the most excellent mages in the magical world are as weak as ants before a Campione. The only ones who can serve as opponents to a God-slayer are fellow "Kings" or "Heretic Gods." As for Japanese mages, the mere thought of resisting a "King" wouldn't even cross their minds.
"Do we need to send someone to greet the King?" one person asked, raising a hand.
Hearing this, the suit-clad Kaoru Sayanomiya shook her head. "No, let's not act rashly for now. Since the two knights by the King's side haven't contacted us proactively, it's best to wait here."
Then, Touma Amakasu spoke again. "So, what could be the purpose of these two Kings coming here? Tourism?"
