Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 - "Dream ?"

Chapter 17

Max walked.

The street became a road.

The road became a highway.

Cars passed. Occasional. Headlights cutting through the dark.

None of them stopped.

Max kept walking. Along the shoulder. Gravel crunching under his feet.

His right leg dragged. The knife wound in his side burned. Wet.

His vision blurred at the edges.

He blinked. Tried to focus.

The white line marking the road's edge doubled. Then tripled.

Max stumbled. Caught himself. Kept walking.

Another car passed. Didn't slow down.

His breathing was wrong. Shallow. Labored. Something rattling in his chest.

The highway stretched ahead. Empty. Dark.

Max took another step.

His leg gave out.

He fell forward. Hit the gravel. Hard.

Couldn't get up.

Tried. His arms wouldn't support him.

He rolled onto his back. Looked at the sky.

Dark. No stars. Just black.

His eyes closed.

---

---

Light.

Warm light.

Max opened his eyes.

He was somewhere else.

A room. Familiar. His childhood home.

The living room.

His parents were there. Both of them. Sitting on the couch. Together.

His mother looked up. Smiled. "Max. Come here."

Max stood. Walked over.

His legs worked. No pain. No blood.

He looked down at his arms. Whole. Undamaged.

"Sit with us," his father said. Patted the space between them.

Max sat.

His mother put her arm around him. "We love you."

Max looked at her. "What?"

"We love you," she said again. "We always have."

His father nodded. "You're our son. You've always been our son."

"I don't understand."

"You don't need to," his mother said. "Just know that we love you."

His father squeezed his shoulder. "We're sorry. For everything. We're so sorry."

Max felt something break in his chest. Not pain. Something else.

Tears.

He was crying.

His mother pulled him close. "It's okay. You're safe now."

The scene shifted.

Daniel was there. From school. From years ago.

"You kept your promise," Daniel said. Smiled. "You lived."

"I don't know if—"

"You did. You survived. That's what matters."

Aiko appeared. Standing by the window. Alive. Smiling.

"I'm sorry," Max said. "I'm so sorry."

She shook her head. "It's not your fault. None of it was your fault."

"But—"

"You didn't do anything wrong, Max."

She walked over. Took his hand. Hers was warm.

"You're going to be okay," she said.

Everyone was there now. Everyone he'd known. Everyone he'd lost.

All of them smiling. Happy. At peace.

"You're going to be okay," they said together.

The light grew brighter.

Warm. Safe.

Max closed his eyes.

---

---

A voice cut through the warmth.

"—someone call it in—"

"—on the side of the road—"

"—still breathing—"

Max felt hands on him. Lifting. Moving.

"Hey. Hey, can you hear me?"

Max's eyes flickered open. Couldn't focus.

A face above him. A man. Middle-aged. Concerned.

"I've got you. You're going to be okay. Just hold on."

Max was being lifted. Placed on something soft. A car seat.

The man was talking. Phone pressed to his ear.

"—yes, highway 26, just past the exit—"

"—covered in blood, multiple wounds—"

"—please hurry—"

The car moved. Fast.

Max stared at the ceiling. Fabric. Gray. Real.

"Stay with me," the man said. "What's your name?"

Max's mouth moved. No sound came out.

"It's okay. Don't talk. Just stay awake. Can you do that?"

Max blinked.

"Good. That's good."

---

---

Bright lights.

Different lights. Fluorescent. Hospital lights.

Voices everywhere.

"—severe blood loss—"

"—multiple stab wounds, lacerations—"

"—get him to trauma—"

"—type and cross match, six units—"

Hands on him. Cutting his clothes. Pressing. Probing.

Pain. Sharp. Immediate.

"—BP dropping—"

"—start another line—"

"—move move move—"

Max was moving. Ceiling tiles passing overhead. Fast.

Doors. More lights.

A mask over his face. Oxygen. Plastic smell.

Someone counting.

"—three, two, one—"

Then nothing.

---

---

Beeping.

Steady. Regular.

Max's eyes opened slowly.

White ceiling. Textured. Acoustic tiles. Water stains in one corner.

Not perfectly white. Real white. Imperfect.

He turned his head. Slowly.

A hospital room.

Window to his right. Daylight streaming through. Real daylight. Not fluorescent. Warm.

An IV in his left arm. Clear tubing. Bag hanging above him.

Monitors beside the bed. Green lines. Numbers. Heart rate. Blood pressure. Oxygen saturation.

All of it real.

Max looked at his arms. Bandaged. White gauze. Professional. Clean.

His chest hurt. His side hurt. Everything hurt.

But it was real pain. Localized. Understandable.

Not the endless pain of the black room.

The door was open. Slightly. He could see the hallway beyond. Nurses walking past. Normal. Busy.

One of them noticed him. Stopped. Came in.

"Oh, you're awake." She smiled. Kind. Professional. "How are you feeling?"

Max's throat was dry. He tried to speak. Managed a rasp. "Water."

"Of course. Let me get the doctor first, okay? He'll want to see you."

She left. Returned a moment later with a cup. Straw. Held it to his lips.

Max drank. The water was cold. Real. He could taste it.

"The doctor will be here in a minute," she said. "You've been unconscious for two days. You lost a lot of blood."

Two days.

Real time. Measurable time.

"Where—" Max's voice cracked. "Where am I?"

"Osaka General Hospital. A man found you on the highway. Brought you in."

The stranger. The kind man.

"Is he—"

"He left his contact information. Said he wanted to know you were okay."

Real. This was real.

A doctor entered. Older. Glasses. White coat. Clipboard.

"Mr. Whitmore. Good to see you awake." He checked the monitors. "You're very lucky. Another hour and you wouldn't have made it."

"What happened to me?"

The doctor looked at him. "You don't remember?"

Max hesitated. "Not clearly."

"You had multiple stab wounds. Severe lacerations on both forearms. Looked like—" he paused. "Well. We've treated everything. You'll recover. But it will take time."

Real. Medical explanations. Normal doctor talk.

"The police will want to speak with you," the doctor continued. "When you're ready. About what happened."

Max nodded.

"For now, just rest. You're safe here."

Safe.

The word settled over him like a blanket.

Safe.

The doctor left. The nurse adjusted his IV. Asked if he needed anything. He said no.

She left too.

Max lay there. Listening to the beeping. The sounds of the hospital. Distant conversations. Wheels on linoleum. Normal sounds.

Real sounds.

He looked out the window. Blue sky. Clouds. Trees visible at the edge of the parking lot.

Real.

He'd escaped.

Somehow, he'd escaped.

Max closed his eyes.

For the first time in—how long?—he felt something like peace.

The pain was real. The bandages were real. The hospital was real.

He was real.

He was alive.

Max's lips curved slightly.

A small smile.

Peaceful.

Finally at peace.

He drifted. The medication pulling him down gently.

Sleep coming naturally. Safely.

He smiled.

And slept.

---

---

Max lay in the black room.

On his back.

Arms at his sides. Destroyed. Bleeding.

Smiling.

Peaceful. Serene.

His eyes closed.

His breathing shallow.

In the corner. High up. Near the ceiling.

A small light.

Red.

Blinking.

Steady. Regular.

Recording.

Watching.

The smile remained on Max's face.

Peaceful.

Content.

The red light blinked.

On.

Off.

On.

Off.

The darkness pressed close.

Silence.

Just the sound of his breathing.

And the blinking red light.

Nothing else.
