The damp, mold-ridden air of the abandoned subway station was torn apart by Erica's shallow, ragged gasps. Shrouded in the shadow of the rusted, decaying train car in the center of the station, Scott and Stiles watched over the seizing girl in helpless desperation.
Derek Hale leaned against the cold, rusted iron rails of the tracks, using his raw strength to pin Erica's convulsing body down. The black veins of the Kanima venom were spreading rapidly up her throat, sending her body into violent, bone-snapping tremors with every passing second.
"Derek, you have to do something!" Scott yelled, his eyes wide and trembling with panic. "She's dying! The venom is taking over her entire body!"
"I know!" Derek growled back. He dug his claws into Erica's arm, desperately trying to siphon her agony, but the pitch-black veins of the poison began to climb up his own forearms, forcing him to pull back with a sharp hiss. "The venom is too concentrated. Whoever is pulling the Kanima's strings... they're making the creature more lethal by the day."
Without another word, Derek grabbed Erica's arm and snapped it with a sickening, metallic crack.
Erica screamed out in pure agony.
"Don't worry," Derek panted, looking down at her. "The physical trauma will trigger her accelerated healing."
Within moments, the dark veins began to recede, and Erica's erratic breathing started to stabilize. As her werewolf regeneration kicked in, the suffocating tension in the room broke, and everyone let out a collective breath of relief.
Stiles opened his mouth, drawing in breath to crack a sarcastic joke, when a heavy cylinder clattered to the ground right to his right.
A flashbang.
"Stiles, get down!" Scott roared, lunging forward and wrapping his body around his friend just as the device detonated.
BANG!
A blinding, deafening shockwave tore through the station, followed immediately by three more canisters bouncing across the concrete. In an instant, the abandoned subway station was flooded with an artificial, blinding white light. Massive tactical strobe lights and high-intensity ultraviolet LED searchlights flickered on from the rafters, illuminating every corner of the underground station so fiercely that not even a speck of dust could hide.
Stiles stumbled, his ears ringing as his vision swam in dizzying white spots. Derek coughed violently as thick, grey wolfsbane gas began to hiss from the tactical canisters, struggling to stand as the poison seeped into his lungs. Scott fell to his knees, clutching his throat as the suffocating gas paralyzed his throat.
As the grey mist began to settle under the intense glare of the floodlights, dozens of heavily armed, tactical hunters in silver-alloy armor filed into the station, their weapons drawn and locked onto the weakened pack.
But just as Derek prepared to force himself up for a suicidal charge, an incredibly calm, mocking voice echoed from high above the rafters.
"Well, well, well... looks like there's a party down here. Why wasn't I invited?"
The sarcastic, icy tone instantly sent a wave of relief washing over Derek.
Sean shattered the cracked glass skylight of the metro ceiling, dropping down gracefully to land right beside Derek. Derek smirked, his eyes instantly flaring into a brilliant, predatory crimson.
"Shall we go together?" Derek asked, his fangs baring.
Sean gave a slow, dark nod.
In a fraction of a second, the two of them blurred, leaving behind a trail of afterimages as they blitzed directly into the advancing tactical squad.
Derek slammed into the first hunter, throwing him against the concrete wall. But as his claws tore through the armor, a high-voltage current surged from the hunter's chest plate, sending a violent jolt through Derek's body. He stumbled back, momentarily paralyzed. Behind him, another hunter raised a heavy stun baton, aiming a lethal strike directly at the back of Derek's head.
Before the baton could land, a spike of pitch-black shadow erupted from the hunter's own shadow on the ground. The shadow spike snaked up his back, pierced directly through the nape of his neck, and exited through the center of his forehead, pinning the dead hunter to the high ceiling of the station.
Sean winced slightly, noticing how thin and fragile the shadow spike looked. He glanced up at the high-intensity UV floodlights. Smart, Sean thought. The lights are designed to suppress my shadow step and constructs.
Derek recovered instantly, grabbing a rusted piece of metal scrap from the floor and hurling it with perfect precision. It shattered the lens of the floodlight targeting Sean's side of the room.
"We're even!" Derek barked over the chaos.
Sean let out a dark chuckle. "Sure, sure... whatever helps you sleep at night."
As the shattered light plunged that corner back into darkness, a pool of absolute blackness swallowed the hunter standing directly beneath it, dragging him silently into the abyss before he could even scream.
From the safety of the pillars, Scott watched the seamless, devastating coordination between Sean and Derek. A heavy, hollow feeling settled in his chest—a crushing realization of just how weak and unprepared he was compared to them.
Stiles, keeping his head low, suddenly felt a weak hand tug at his jacket. He looked down and saw Erica, pale and shivering.
"Scott," Stiles hissed, snapping his friend out of his trance. "Erica is still too weak. We need to get her out of the crossfire. Now. At the very least, we can't be a liability to them."
Scott looked at Erica, then back at the battlefield, and nodded grimly. He hoisted Erica over his shoulder, and the three of them retreated further into the dark, collapsed tunnels of the outer subway lines.
Safe in the shadows of the tunnel, Stiles kept his eyes locked on Sean, who was still dancing through the tactical squad. He watched the way Sean's eyes flickered, the golden beta light constantly fighting against those terrifying, encroaching red veins.
"Scott..." Stiles whispered, his voice trembling. "Can someone... can someone become an Alpha on their own? Without stealing a spark?"
"I don't know, Stiles," Scott muttered, his voice tight. "But Sean's situation... it's always been different. It's like he's not just a werewolf."
"Yeah," Stiles breathed, his mind racing. "I'm seeing it too. And I'm pretty sure he knows it, too. This hybrid state makes him practically invincible. As a werewolf, his physical stats are off the charts for close combat. But those dark things he controls... they let him dominate the battlefield from a distance. He's a perfect close and long-range killing machine."
"Mr. Deaton must know something about this," Scott said, his jaw clenching. "We have to ask him... Stiles, look! Sean and Derek are in trouble!"
The final, critical moment of the skirmish had arrived.
Fourteen heavily armed tactical hunters had surrounded Derek and Sean in a tight, impenetrable circle. Fearing the risk of crossfire in the enclosed space, the hunters refrained from using firearms. Instead, they drew high-voltage stun batons and tactical carbon blades, closing the distance step by step.
Derek was breathing heavily, sweat dripping down his face. "What's the plan, Sean?"
Sean, despite the exertion, had a twisted, deeply amused grin plastered across his face. "Actually... there's something I've been wanting to try for a while."
As the hunters lunged in unison, Sean barked a single command: "Now!"
Derek instantly spun around, using Sean's shoulders as a launching pad to leap high into the air, completely clearing the blast radius.
Sean dropped low, his entire left arm instantly coating itself in a thick, flowing layer of liquid darkness. He slammed his open palm hard into the concrete floor.
BOOM!
A violent seismic tremor shook the entire metro station, so powerful that several concrete pillars cracked, making it almost impossible for the hunters to keep their footing.
And then, the light died.
A massive wave of absolute, light-swallowing darkness erupted from Sean's palm, forming a colossal dome that snapped shut over the fourteen hunters like a steel bear trap. The blinding UV strobes and searchlights were completely snuffed out within the dark sphere.
From inside the dome, a chorus of agonizing, blood-curdling screams echoed through the station. It lasted for three agonizing seconds.
Then, dead silence.
The dark dome dissolved, melting back into Sean's shadow.
Fourteen elite hunters collapsed onto the cold concrete. They weren't physically mutilated, but they were convulsing violently. Thick foam mixed with blood seeped from their lips, and dark blood poured in steady streams from their ears and noses.
Derek landed back on the ground, staring at the sight in absolute disbelief. "What did you just do?"
Sean slowly stood up, brushing the dust off his jacket. "Oh, nothing much. Just... opened my eyes a bit wider."
Only one person in the station understood the true horror of what had just happened.
Stiles stood frozen in the tunnel. He had seen Sean break people's minds with a single, hypnotic stare before. Sean had taken that very same mental-crush ability and integrated it with his shadow domain. He hadn't just trapped the hunters in darkness; he had projected a colossal, soul-shattering eye inside the dome, instantly obliterating the sanity of fourteen elite combatants simultaneously.
Sean turned his head, catching Stiles' horrified expression, and burst into a cold, amused laugh. He walked over to the tunnel, playfully patting Stiles on the shoulder.
"Hey, Stiles," Sean whispered, his voice dripping with amusement. "Looks like you're the only one who actually understood my move, huh?"
Stiles couldn't even find the words to speak. He just kept staring at the twitching bodies on the floor. A terrifying, intrusive thought crossed his mind: If Sean had pushed that mental strike just a fraction harder... would their heads have simply popped like balloons?
It was a nightmare of a thought, but looking at Sean's smiling face, Stiles knew it was entirely possible.
