Chapter 233 - Chapter 233: George’s Return (Continued)

"How've you been, old friend?" George sat down next to Coach Wayne, looking like he was settling in for a long heart-to-heart.

"Terrible. I just finalized the divorce with Serena. I still can't believe she did what she did..." Finally having someone to vent to, the dejected Coach Wayne couldn't help but unload about his ex-wife.

It was the kind of betrayal that would gut any man.

However, Wayne quickly realized this wasn't the time or place. He shifted his tone, saying, "Whatever, forget about all that junk. What about you? How's life been since you left the team?"

"Not bad. I found a gig at a sporting goods store—weekends off, steady hours..." George answered casually, keeping his own struggles to himself.

The two made small talk for a while, with George constantly looking for an opening to give his friend a much-needed pep talk.

By 10:00 AM, the atmosphere shifted. As the game prepared to kick off, the players from Little Garden High took the field.

Before heading out, Captain Aaron approached Coach Wayne. "Coach, what's the game plan for today?"

"Game plan?" Coach Wayne clearly hadn't given it a single thought. He waved a hand dismissively. "Just run the same stuff we did in practice."

Practice stuff? That basically meant no plan at all.

"Right. Okay." Aaron blinked, but he didn't call the coach out on his laziness.

Out of respect for George—the former head coach—Aaron bit his tongue, gave a worried nod to the guys, and led the team onto the field with a heavy heart.

"Wayne, this Spring Invitational is a huge stage for you to prove yourself..."

With Aaron gone, George took his shot. "If you can take this group of kids—and they've got real potential—and put up some solid numbers, you might actually catch the eye of a college scout."

Last year, George had landed a college coaching offer precisely because he had turned the team around. Wayne was still in his thirties, the prime of his career. He had every chance to move up the ladder.

When you hit middle age, you usually have to hold onto either your family or your career. George was hoping that the prospect of professional success would pull his friend out of his domestic funk.

"We'll see when the Summer League rolls around," Wayne muttered, totally checking out.

Technically, the Spring Invitational didn't affect the rankings and carried much less weight than the Summer League. But looking ahead to summer was just an excuse for Wayne to dodge the reality in front of him.

Back when he was George's assistant, Wayne had a reputation for being a bit of a slacker. Now, after the blow his family life had taken, he had lost his edge entirely.

George looked at his disheveled, defeated friend and shook his head. You can't help someone who's decided to give up on themselves.

"Hey, you want to grab a drink after this?" Wayne asked, still mired in his own gloom. Alcohol was the only thing that could numb the pain and let him forget for a while.

"Sure," George nodded. He couldn't say no to a friend in that state. Then, he turned his focus back to the field.

Out on the turf, the coin toss was over. Little Garden High had won the toss and elected to receive. As the teams lined up, the first quarter officially began.

Little Garden started with a standard dink-and-dunk passing game, trying to methodically move the chains. On the other side, Medford—still stinging from their previous loss—was playing with high intensity, looking for redemption.

A brutal battle for field position broke out at the fifty-yard line.

Led by Sam, the Medford defense swarmed the opposing quarterback. It was clear that Sam and the other veterans hadn't let their fundamentals slide. Watching from the sidelines, George nodded in approval.

The game turned into a grueling back-and-forth. Finally, four minutes in, after being stopped three times, Little Garden managed to nail a field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

Three points in four minutes wasn't high-octane scoring, but for two teams testing each other out, it was a respectable start.

However, the vibe changed the moment possession switched.

Medford's loss last week was no secret. The Little Garden coach had done his homework. So, when Medford came out with their "Dual Core" strategy again because they had no other plays, Little Garden went straight into a localized zone defense.

It was like a rerun of last week's disaster. The Medford players were miserable. It's one thing to be outmatched; it's another to know you're the better team but be trapped in a tactical "quicksand" where you're just waiting to die.

By the time Sam was triple-teamed at mid-field and forced to go down to save the ball, his temper was flaring.

And this was only the first quarter. If things kept going this way, this game was going to be an even bigger embarrassment than the last one.

"Wayne, the boys need you!"

George called out from the bench, noticing the wheels falling off. This was the exact moment a coach was supposed to step up.

"It's fine. It's just an invitational. A little adversity is good for them," Wayne replied, leaning back in his chair like he didn't have a care in the world. He was totally "phoning it in."

"Unbelievable." George shook his head, finally giving up on Wayne.

As the quarter dragged on, Medford's offense couldn't punch through. They were losing ground and, more importantly, losing their spirit. When the whistle blew to end the first quarter, the team trudged back to the sidelines looking completely defeated.

Seeing the kids with their heads down, George couldn't take it anymore. He stood up and clapped his hands loudly to get their attention.

"Listen up, guys! The game just started. We are not rolling over!"

The veterans immediately flocked to him. For a moment, it felt just like the old days.

"Aaron, Sam, I need you to switch up your looks..." George started sketching out a way to break the zone defense.

He reminded Aaron to use his superior vision and arm strength for deep balls. He told the team to clear out space for Sam, because once the big guy got a head of steam, nobody in this league could stop him.

"And the rest of you—wake up! You're a team, not a bunch of individuals! Let's go!"

The break was only two minutes long. As the players headed back out, George's pep talk had given them back their "main character" energy.

The second quarter was a different story. Just as George predicted, Aaron's long bombs and Sam's power running shattered Little Garden's defense.

The Medford fans, who had almost given up hope, erupted in cheers and applause. The momentum shifted like a physical weight. Football is a game of confidence, and Medford was suddenly overflowing with it.

They pushed Little Garden back drive after drive until the opposing coach was forced to burn a timeout.

"Coach, what's next?" Aaron ran to the sideline, looking directly at George for guidance.

"They're going to adjust after this timeout. But don't sweat it. You're stronger and faster than they are. No matter what tricks they try, just play smash-mouth football and stay focused," George advised.

The Medford squad had turned a corner. As long as they didn't make any massive mistakes, there was no way they were losing a head-to-head fight.
