Chapter 71 - Chapter 71: The City Lord's Inquiry

The hearing chamber was already half full when Wang Ben took his seat.

He'd arrived early on purpose, wanting time to read the room before the City Lord appeared. Formal robes displaying the Wang Clan's crest without ostentation. His wounds had mostly healed, but a deep ache still lingered in his ribs where Xue Feng's strikes had connected. He ignored it. Today's battle wouldn't be physical.

Beside him, Wang Tian sat with his foundation establishment aura deliberately restrained to a level that projected strength without appearing to threaten. A political choice that Wang Ben recognized because his father had explained it on the walk over.

"Remember," Wang Tian said, his voice pitched low enough that only Wang Ben could hear. "Answer truthfully, but don't volunteer. The City Lord will ask about things he already knows the answers to. He's not looking for information. He's looking for how you respond."

"And if he asks about things he shouldn't know?"

"Then you say you cannot answer, and you don't explain why." Wang Tian's face was grave. "Huo Zhenyang has ruled this city for a very long time. He didn't survive by being foolish. He knows there are powers involved that exceed his authority. He won't push you to name them."

"Because he's afraid of them?"

"Because he's smart enough to be afraid." Wang Tian gripped his arm briefly. "This is a show, Ben. Play your part well and we buy time. Play it poorly and we give our enemies a weapon to use against us."

[OBSERVATION: City Lord core formation, centuries-old. Political survivor. Pattern consistent with prioritizing city stability over external faction demands.]

Wang Ben absorbed the System's analysis. It aligned with what his father had said, which was reassuring. At least his instincts weren't entirely wrong.

The gallery seats continued to fill. Not a private audience, then. This was meant to be witnessed.

Clan representatives occupied the rows around them. Wang Ben spotted an elder from the Huo Clan's local branch, several unfamiliar faces from merchant families, and near the back...

Dao Zhen sat rigid in his seat, First Elder Dao Qingshan beside him. The young patriarch's face was studiously blank, but his eyes tracked Wang Ben and did not let go.

Wang Ben acknowledged Dao Zhen with a slight nod. The gesture was not returned.

A bell sounded once at the hall's far end. The murmur in the gallery cut off as if a door had closed on it. Two attendants drew aside the curtains behind the raised platform, and City Lord Huo Zhenyang stepped through.

The room rose. Wang Ben rose with it.

The City Lord took his seat without ceremony. He was an ancient figure, his appearance frozen somewhere in his fifties despite his centuries of life. Core formation cultivation granted that illusion of timelessness. But his eyes were old in a way that transcended appearance, sharpened by decades of political calculation.

"Wang Ben of the Wang Clan." The City Lord's voice carried easily through the hall, amplified by subtle formations. "You are called to give testimony regarding the events of three days past. The attack by demonic cultivators. The death of Xue Feng, former heir of the dissolved Xue Clan. And the circumstances surrounding your survival."

Wang Ben stepped forward and bowed formally. "I am here to serve the city's need for truth, City Lord."

"Then let us begin."

The questions started simply enough.

"Describe the attack. Who initiated it? What was their apparent purpose?"

Wang Ben recounted the events clearly. Three demonic cultivators appearing without warning. Their enhanced cultivation, the wrongness of their qi. The attack on the clinic where his mother and brother had sought treatment.

"And Xue Feng?" The City Lord's tone remained neutral. "He joined the attack?"

"He arrived after the initial attack began. His purpose was personal. Revenge for his clan's fall."

"A fall which occurred during the recent conflict between your clan and his." Not a question. A statement of fact, delivered with the gravity of official record.

"Yes, City Lord."

A scribe in the corner made notes. Wang Ben caught the small movements in the gallery, the Huo elder's brush pausing over his own slip, a merchant leaning toward his neighbor without quite turning his head. The City Lord was establishing context, shaping the account that would be sent on to the Crimson Bastion. A young master seeking revenge. Demonic backing of unknown origin. Local clan caught in the crossfire.

"The demonic cultivators," Huo Zhenyang continued. "Did you recognize any of them? Had you encountered them before?"

"No, City Lord. They were unknown to me."

"And yet you survived against them. Three demonic cultivators, enhanced beyond their natural limits, against a young man of..." He paused, consulting a jade slip. "Early-stage qi condensation, I believe?"

Wang Ben drew a slow breath against the ache in his ribs.

"I was not alone, City Lord. Two of my clan's guards came with my family to the clinic. And my retainer Zhao Yu arrived during the battle."

"Two clan guards." Huo Zhenyang set the jade slip down on the lacquered table beside him, the small sound carrying further than it should have. "Peak mid-stage qi condensation, I am told. Did they hold?"

"They held the stairs to the upper room, City Lord. They died fighting the strongest of the demonic cultivators."

A pause. The City Lord gave a small gesture toward the scribe. "Recorded for the dead."

He let the words sit, then continued. "Witnesses also describe golden light from the upper floor as the demonic cultivators broke through. A defensive talisman of significant grade." A small gesture toward the scribe. "Noted as well."

He did not ask where it had come from. There was no need.

"Your retainer, then."

"Zhao Yu. Together we brought down two of them."

A pause. Huo Zhenyang's eyes did not move, but something behind them did. He gave a small gesture toward the scribe, and the brush moved.

The questions came to an end.

The City Lord dismissed the gallery with a gesture.

"Clear the gallery. I will speak with Wang Ben privately."

The words sent a new ripple through the observers. Private audiences with the City Lord were rare, reserved for matters too sensitive for public record. Dao Zhen rose with the others, but his eyes lingered on Wang Ben as he departed. First Elder Dao Qingshan had to touch his arm to move him along.

When the hall was empty save for the two of them, Huo Zhenyang's formal mask slipped. What emerged was weariness. The strain of someone caught between forces he couldn't control.

"That will do for the official record," he said. "Now let us speak plainly."

Wang Ben remained standing, uncertain of protocol. The City Lord waved a hand.

"Sit. This isn't an interrogation anymore."

He sat.

"The Crimson Bastion has taken an interest in your family." Huo Zhenyang's voice was flat, stating facts rather than making accusations. "You know the reasons as well as I do. And now they have scouts in my city, watching yours, reporting to people whose authority I cannot question."

"I cannot confirm..."

"I'm not asking you to." The City Lord raised a hand. "I'm telling you what I know, so you understand the situation. The Bastion will demand a report on today's proceedings, as they demand reports on everything that happens in a frontier city. I am required to provide that report."

Wang Ben felt his stomach tighten. "And?"

"And reports can be... comprehensive or brief. Detailed or summary. They can be sent at once or delayed while matters are weighed." Huo Zhenyang met his eyes directly. "I have some discretion in these matters."

"What would the City Lord have of us?"

The old cultivator laughed, though there was no humor in it. "What would I have. I would have my city remain stable. I would have powers that can crush me with a thought stay out of my streets. I would have the Bastion stop pressuring me about matters I cannot control." He paused. "I would have my last decades pass without falling to forces I do not understand."

"I can't guarantee any of that."

"No. But you can avoid making things worse." Huo Zhenyang leaned back in his seat. "Keep your protectors quiet. Keep your conflicts contained. Don't give me more bodies to explain or more mysteries to report. If your family can remain unremarkable for a while, I can delay reports, emphasize uncertainty, give you time."

"Time for what?"

"That's your concern, not mine." The City Lord rose, signaling the audience's end. "I'm offering what I can offer, Wang Ben. A buffer between your family and forces that would crush you. Use it wisely."

Wang Ben stood and bowed formally. "Thank you, City Lord."

"Don't thank me. I'm not doing this for you." Huo Zhenyang's voice was tired. "I'm doing it because I don't want to find out what happens if I do anything else."

...

Outside the hall, Dao Zhen stood apart from the dispersing crowd and watched Wang Ben emerge.

First Elder Dao Qingshan appeared at his shoulder. "You're brooding again, Zhen."

"I'm thinking." Dao Zhen did not turn. "About the vassalage."

Qingshan said nothing.

...

The walk back to the compound was silent. Wang Tian had said nothing since leaving the City Lord's hall, and Wang Ben had nothing to add until he could say it where it mattered.

When they reached the Patriarch's study, Wang Tiexin was already waiting. He had not attended the hearing; the head of the clan in the chamber would have given too much weight to what the City Lord wanted treated as routine. He stood at the window now, looking out over the inner courtyard, and turned only when Wang Tian closed the door behind them.

"Sit, both of you." His voice was steady. "And tell me how it went."

Wang Ben sat. He took a breath and gave the public hearing first. The questions. His answers. The things the City Lord had chosen to write into the record, and the things he had chosen to leave out. The two clan guards recorded for the dead. The talisman acknowledged without inquiry into its source. Zhao Yu's role noted briefly. He moved through it without embellishment. Wang Tian, who had been there to hear it, said nothing.

Then the private audience.

The Crimson Bastion had taken interest in the Wang Clan. There were scouts in Redstone, reporting to authorities the City Lord could not question. He was required to write a report on the hearing, as he was on everything that happened in a frontier city.

He had also offered discretion.

"What kind of discretion?" Wang Tiexin asked.

"Comprehensive or brief. Detailed or summary. Sent at once or delayed while matters are weighed." Wang Ben quoted as best he could remember. "He said he had some discretion in these matters."

"For what price?"

"That we remain unremarkable for a while. No more bodies for him to explain. No more mysteries to report." Wang Ben let the breath go. "He said he was not doing it for us. He was doing it because he did not want to find out what happens if he did anything else."

A silence settled.

Wang Tian was the first to break it. "An ally of convenience."

"A frightened man, by his own admission." Wang Tiexin's eyes had not left his grandson. "And a careful one. The two together can hold for a while. Days. Perhaps weeks. Not longer." He turned at last toward the window. "It is enough."

Wang Ben understood what he meant.

Eventually the conversation about the City Lord wound down. Wang Tian returned to his workshop, and Wang Ben followed his grandfather back to the archive to continue their work on the formation design.

"While you were in the City Lord's hall, Elder Hongwei and I continued the work on the design."

Wang Ben crossed to the worktable. The two of them walked him through what they had set down. He read it once, then again. What Elder Hongwei had caught, the Archive had not. Between the three of them, they had a design they believed would hold.

What remained was the wait. The last of the node materials were still on the road from Shen Wuyan's people, and the foundational work could not begin until they arrived. When the work began, all three of them would have hands on it. And if it held, if Ruoxi's breakthrough proved the design sound, the Wang Clan would carry away from it a grand formation they could adapt for their own breakthroughs in the years to come.
