Chapter 298: The Siblings of Chakra

Ragnar's Cabin — The Dark Hours Before Dawn

The night pressed against the windows of the small wooden house. Outside, Konoha slept—or tried to. The Nine-Tails' chakra had washed over the village like a wave of nightmare, waking children, unsettling animals, leaving even the most stoic shinobi with an unshakeable sense of dread. The beast had not broken free. The seal had held. But everyone who had felt that malevolent pressure knew: something was coming.

Inside his cabin, Ragnar sat motionless on his bed. His eyes were closed. His breathing was slow and deep. A faint layer of scarlet chakra shimmered across the surface of his skin—hot, volatile, pulsing with an ancient fury that was not his own.

This was not the Nine-Tails' chakra. Not exactly. It was the chakra of the Five-Tails—Kokuō—that flowed through him now. But the essence of all Tailed Beast chakra was the same. They shared a common origin: the Divine Tree. The Ten-Tails. The primordial entity from which all nine had been carved by the Sage of Six Paths. Different beasts. Different powers. But the fundamental nature was identical. Volcanic. Primordial. Alive with a hatred that predated human memory.

Ragnar's hands moved through a sequence of seals. His eyes opened.

POOF.

White smoke billowed, and from its depths emerged the miniature form of the Five-Tails. Kokuō materialized on the bed before him, her dolphin-like body sleek and pale in the dim lamplight. She shook her head vigorously, ears flapping, five tails swaying with agitation.

"That idiot Nine-Tails," she said, her voice carrying the particular exasperation of a sibling who had endured centuries of bad behavior. "Still the same as always. Too violent. Too angry. No control at all. He felt the old woman weakening and immediately started thrashing. Did he really think that would work? After all these years, has he learned nothing?"

Ragnar regarded her with calm, dark eyes. "You sensed it."

"Of course I sensed it." Kokuō's tails curled and uncurled with restless energy. "We're siblings, in a manner of speaking. When one of us flares up like that, the others feel it. The old woman—Uzumaki Mito—her seal is failing. She won't last much longer. When she passes, the transfer will be dangerous. For everyone. Especially for that red-haired girl."

She fixed Ragnar with a look that was surprisingly perceptive for a creature who claimed not to understand humans.

"You're worried about her."

Ragnar did not answer. The scarlet chakra around his body flickered once, sharply, then settled back into its steady rhythm.

"The Nine-Tails is not like me," Kokuō continued, her voice softer now. "I chose to stay with you. I chose to share my power. But the Nine-Tails... he was captured. Sealed against his will. He has been a prisoner since the days of the First Hokage. All that time. All that hatred. And now he's about to be transferred to a new cage before the old one even finishes dying."

She paused. Her large, liquid eyes held something that might have been sadness.

"He wasn't always like this, you know. None of us were. We were born from the Sage's dream of peace. We were meant to be... more than weapons. More than monsters. But humans only ever saw our power. They never saw us."

Ragnar listened in silence. He knew the story. The Sage of Six Paths, dying, had divided the Ten-Tails' chakra into nine living beings. He had hoped they would guide humanity. Instead, humanity had hunted them. Sealed them. Used them as engines of war. Century after century of imprisonment and exploitation had twisted the Tailed Beasts into the vengeful demons the world now feared.

Humanity had created its own monsters.

"The Nine-Tails will resist the transfer," Ragnar said. It was not a question.

"He will fight with everything he has," Kokuō confirmed. "He'll try to break free. He'll try to kill the new Jinchūriki before the seal can take hold. The girl will need to be strong. Stronger than she knows she is."

"She is."

Kokuō tilted her head, studying him. "You have a strange kind of faith in people, Rakshasa. For someone who claims not to care."

"I never said I didn't care."

"No. You just never say anything at all." Kokuō's tails swayed. "Three days. That's all the time the old woman has left. And then... everything changes."

Ragnar closed his eyes again. The scarlet chakra dimmed, then faded entirely, retreating back into the seal that bound Kokuō's power to his body. The room was quiet. The night was still.

Three days.

In three days, Kushina would become the Nine-Tails Jinchūriki. The sealing ceremony would be dangerous—potentially catastrophic. The beast would resist. The seal would need to be flawless. And if anything went wrong, the Nine-Tails would rampage through the heart of Konoha, and nothing short of the Hokage's full power would be able to stop it.

But that was not what worried Ragnar.

What worried him was what came after. The burden Kushina would carry for the rest of her life. The isolation. The fear. The constant, grinding pressure of containing a demon inside her soul. She would become a weapon. A target. A prisoner in her own body, just as the Nine-Tails was a prisoner in her seal.

And she would bear it alone. Unless someone stood beside her.

Ragnar opened his eyes. The first light of dawn was beginning to creep through the window.

"Three days," he said quietly.

Kokuō watched him for a long moment. Then she curled into a compact ball at the foot of his bed, her five tails wrapping around her like a blanket.

"You humans," she murmured, closing her eyes. "So complicated. So fragile. And yet... you keep surprising me."

The sun rose over Konoha. And somewhere in the Senju compound, a dying woman held her granddaughter's hand and whispered the secrets of the seal.

The countdown had begun.
