Chapter 239: The Temptation of the Mangekyō
On the border of the Land of Fire, a group of shinobi dressed in gray clothing moved quietly along the road.
The symbol of a fan was embroidered on their backs.
They were members of the Uchiha Clan.
This unit had been among the first to withdraw from the Land of Rain after the war ended.
Among the villages of Konoha, the reputation of the Uchiha during the Second Shinobi War had become somewhat awkward.
When the fighting began, they had participated.
But their enthusiasm had never been particularly high.
And when it came time to retreat…
They were among the fastest.
The truth was complicated.
When Sarutobi Hiruzen became Hokage, his authority was not yet as absolute as that of Tobirama Senju.
For years, the Uchiha clan had felt suppressed by Konoha's leadership.
Their resources were limited.
Their authority restricted.
Resentment had slowly accumulated.
When the new Hokage took office, many within the clan had quietly expressed dissatisfaction.
Participating in the war had partly been an act of obligation.
And partly a way to demonstrate their existence to the village leadership.
Hiruzen understood this perfectly well.
But he chose to overlook it.
Even if the Uchiha were only half-hearted in battle, their presence still helped strengthen Konoha's military forces.
For the time being, that was enough.
However, now that the war had ended and the village was stabilizing…
The Hokage would never allow a potentially unstable clan to grow unchecked.
Unknown to the Uchiha, plans were already forming within Konoha.
And Danzo Shimura had been tasked with carrying them out.
The clan's rebellious tendencies would have to be contained.
Before they grew into something worse.
At the Border Camp
The Uchiha shinobi rested near the forest.
Among them stood a young man whose expression had been dark ever since leaving the battlefield.
Uchiha Fugaku.
Since returning from the front lines of the Rain Country, Fugaku had changed.
He had become restless.
Irritable.
Sometimes he would fall silent for hours.
Other times he would lash out in frustration.
The reason was simple.
Ragnar.
The overwhelming power Ragnar had displayed during the war had left a deep scar in Fugaku's mind.
It was power beyond comprehension.
Power that seemed impossible to surpass.
And it filled Fugaku with anxiety.
He desperately wanted to uncover the secret of the Mangekyō Sharingan.
But no one in the clan could explain it.
What frustrated him most was that many Uchiha didn't even know such a power existed.
It was absurd.
How could a clan that once stood alongside the God of Shinobi forget its own legacy?
Fugaku could see it clearly now.
The current Uchiha clan had grown complacent.
Many members were bitter toward Konoha.
Yet instead of improving themselves, they complained endlessly.
Their resentment twisted their hearts.
Fugaku feared something even worse.
That one day…
He might become exactly like them.
The thought was terrifying.
Unable to endure the suffocating atmosphere any longer, Fugaku quietly left the camp and walked into the forest alone.
The woods were silent.
Only the sounds of insects and distant birds filled the air.
Fugaku opened his eyes.
The crimson glow of the three-tomoe Sharingan appeared.
"With this power…"
He muttered to himself.
"…I could never defeat Rakshasa."
Once, Fugaku had been recognized as a talented shinobi within the clan.
But because he was not part of the main family line, he had received little attention.
He had learned to suppress his ambitions.
To observe quietly.
To hide his strength.
But Ragnar's appearance had shattered that calm.
Now he searched desperately for a way to grow stronger.
Yet every path seemed blocked.
Then—
A strange laugh echoed through the forest.
"Hehehe… looks like the Uchiha brat is troubled."
Fugaku's expression changed instantly.
"Who's there?!"
His Sharingan spun as he scanned the forest in every direction.
The grass rustled.
A figure slowly stepped forward.
The mysterious person wore a wide bamboo hat and a cloak that concealed his face completely.
Fugaku immediately sensed something terrifying.
He could not detect the man's presence at all.
If the stranger had attacked secretly…
The outcome might have been fatal.
"You can call me… Zetsu."
The man spoke calmly.
"Zetsu?"
Fugaku frowned.
"What do you want?"
"I know the trouble in your heart," the stranger replied.
"You seek greater power."
"You want to surpass Rakshasa."
"And I can help you achieve that."
Fugaku stared at him suspiciously.
"Why should I trust you?"
"Your identity is completely unknown."
The mysterious man chuckled.
"In this generation…"
"You are the only Uchiha with real patience."
Fugaku's voice trembled slightly.
"Who exactly are you?"
"I once served the greatest shinobi of the Uchiha clan."
The figure spoke proudly.
"I am a creation born from the will of Uchiha Madara himself."
"In terms of seniority…"
"You could call me your ancestor."
Fugaku snorted.
"That's ridiculous."
"My ancestors died long ago."
"If someone like you existed, the clan records would mention it."
The stranger laughed again.
"You misunderstand."
"I am not Uchiha."
"I am the manifestation of Madara-sama's will."
"And let me tell you another secret."
"The battle at the Valley of the End…"
"…did not kill him."
Fugaku's heart shook.
But he forced himself to stay calm.
"I don't care who you are."
"I will never believe such nonsense."
"The entire world knows Madara died in that battle."
The stranger tilted his head slightly.
"The Uchiha possess two forbidden techniques."
"Izanagi."
"And Izanami."
"You don't need me to explain them, do you?"
Fugaku's eyes narrowed.
"Izanagi…"
He whispered.
"The technique that sacrifices one Sharingan to rewrite reality itself."
"The ultimate illusion that turns dreams into reality."
The stranger nodded slowly.
"Madara-sama could have used that technique to defeat Hashirama."
"But he chose another path."
"I won't explain why."
Then his voice lowered.
"But the secret you truly seek…"
"The Mangekyō Sharingan."
"…I know how to obtain it."
Fugaku's breathing became heavy.
The stranger had guessed everything in his heart.
How could he possibly know?
"Listen carefully," the figure continued.
"When you return to Konoha…"
"Go to the Uchiha clan's ancestral shrine."
"Beneath it lies a hidden chamber."
"In that chamber stands a stone tablet."
"Only those with Sharingan eyes can read its secrets."
"The answer you seek…"
"…is written there."
Fugaku repeated the words silently.
"Ancestral shrine… underground chamber… stone tablet…"
When he looked up again—
The mysterious figure was gone.
As if he had never existed at all.
Only the quiet forest remained.
But in Fugaku's mind, the seed of temptation had already taken root.
