Chapter 45 - The Heart Beneath the Earth

The heartbeat came again.

*Thump.*

The entire chamber trembled.

Chrono stood completely still. The small fox-like creature beside him lowered its ears. Its nine tails stiffened. The Phoenix Feather embedded within its body glowed faintly while the Nine-Tail essence surrounding it flickered like pale fire.

Chrono slowly looked toward the ground.

*That wasn't an earthquake.*

He could feel it. The vibration wasn't coming from the surface. It was coming from beneath them. Deep beneath them.

*Thump.*

This time, the black arrowhead in Chrono's hand responded. A thin crimson line appeared across its surface.

Chrono's expression hardened. "You reacted to it."

The little creature looked at him. Then toward the underground passage. Its eyes narrowed.

"Ky…"

Chrono crouched. "What is it?"

The creature hesitated. Then it walked toward the passage.

Chrono followed. Gran immediately moved beside him — the wolf-like creature lowering its body, nose close to the ground. Glask followed behind them, his divine energy quietly circulating.

The group advanced through the ancient chamber.

The walls were covered in symbols. Chrono had seen some of them before. But now that he looked carefully — they weren't written in any language he recognized. Not Elven. Not Dwarven. Not Human. Not Beastkin. They weren't even demonic inscriptions.

They looked *older.* Much older.

Chrono placed his hand against the wall. Mana entered the stone.

Nothing happened. He frowned. *No reaction.* He tried again, pushing more mana into it. Still nothing.

The little fox suddenly turned around. It walked toward Chrono and touched the wall with one paw.

The stone immediately reacted.

*FWOOM.*

A faint golden pattern spread across the wall.

Chrono's eyes widened. "Interesting."

The creature looked at him innocently.

Chrono stared at the glowing pattern. *It didn't respond to my mana. It responded to its spiritual energy.* That meant the creation wasn't merely a combination of Phoenix and Nine-Tail materials. Something about its existence interacted with this place.

The System appeared.

---

**[Unique Resonance Detected.]**

**[Target: Newly Created Entity]**

**[Resonance Type: Spiritual]**

**[External Source: Unknown]**

**[Compatibility: Increasing]**

**[Warning: The detected resonance predates current civilization records.]**

---

Chrono's expression changed. "Predates…" He looked at the wall. Then at the fox.

*How old is this place?*

The System continued. **[Additional Information Available.]**

Chrono hesitated. He had learned something important after entering this world — the System did not always reveal everything automatically. Sometimes information existed. He simply had to know what to ask.

"Analyze the structure."

**[Analyzing.]**

The symbols across the wall suddenly became clearer.

---

**[Ancient Structure.]**

**[Classification: Unknown.]**

**[Primary Function: Unknown.]**

**[Current State: Dormant.]**

**[Core Condition: Damaged.]**

**[Energy Source: Unidentified.]**

---

Chrono's eyes narrowed. "Damaged?"

*Thump.*

Dust fell from the ceiling. Gran immediately turned toward the deeper passage, ears rising. Glask stepped forward. "My lord." He pointed toward the darkness. "There is movement."

Chrono's expression became serious.

The little fox suddenly stepped in front of them. Its tails spread outward. A faint spiritual flame appeared around its body — not large, not destructive. Just enough to illuminate the passage.

Chrono stared at the flame. *Spiritual Flame.* He remembered the System description — a flame capable of interacting with spiritual energy, different from ordinary fire. It wasn't meant to burn physical matter. It could interact with things that normal flames couldn't.

Chrono stood. "Stay close."

The fox looked up at him. Then nodded.

Chrono froze. "…You understood me?"

The fox blinked. Its ears twitched. Then it tilted its head.

Chrono stared at it. A second later, he smiled faintly. "You're smarter than your level suggests."

The System responded immediately.

---

**[Observation Confirmed.]**

**[Entity possesses abnormal spiritual cognition.]**

**[Cause: Creation Configuration.]**

**[Potential Growth Path Detected.]**

---

Chrono's smile disappeared. "Potential growth path?"

**[Certain conditions may cause the entity to develop beyond its initial configuration.]**

Chrono looked at the little creature.

*So Creation isn't simply about making a creature. It's giving something a starting point.*

The thought was more significant than he expected. A creation wasn't necessarily finished when it was born. It could grow. Develop. *Change.* Just like a living person.

---

Chrono continued forward.

The deeper they went, the stronger the heartbeat became.

*Thump. Thump. Thump.*

The entire underground structure seemed to pulse with it.

Eventually the passage opened. Chrono stopped.

A massive circular door stood before them, partially buried beneath stone. At its center was a symbol — a hand, surrounded by a ring.

Chrono's breathing slowed. He recognized that shape. Not from this world.

*From the game.*

But only barely. It had appeared in an optional lore entry. Something players rarely discovered. Something he had never considered important.

Chrono approached the door. His hand slowly rose.

Then stopped.

*Wait.*

He looked at the symbol again. The hand wasn't holding anything. It was reaching outward — as if *asking* for something.

The black arrowhead in Chrono's inventory suddenly floated upward. His eyes widened. "You're kidding."

The arrowhead moved toward the door.

*Click.*

It fit perfectly into a small depression beneath the hand symbol.

Chrono stepped backward.

The entire chamber went silent.

Then —

*THUMP.*

The door opened. Not outward.

*Inward.*

Darkness waited beyond it. Not ordinary darkness — there was no reflection of light, no sense of depth. It looked as though the space itself had been *emptied.*

Chrono stared into it. The System appeared.

---

**[Unknown Area Detected.]**

**[Warning.]**

**[This area does not correspond to current world mapping.]**

---

Chrono's eyes narrowed. "Doesn't correspond?"

---

**[Correct.]**

**[Spatial coordinates cannot be determined.]**

**[Historical coordinates cannot be determined.]**

**[Temporal coordinates cannot be determined.]**

---

Chrono's expression slowly changed.

*Temporal coordinates?*

He took one step forward. The little fox grabbed the edge of his clothing with its mouth.

Chrono looked down. It shook its head.

"No?"

The fox stared into the darkness. Its spiritual flame *flickered.* For the first time since its creation — it looked afraid.

Chrono immediately stopped. "Everyone stays here."

Gran growled in disagreement.

Chrono looked at him. "I said stay."

Gran reluctantly lowered himself. Glask remained beside him.

Chrono looked toward the darkness again. He could feel something — not hostility, not killing intent. Something else.

*Recognition.*

As if something inside had noticed him.

*Thump.*

The heartbeat stopped.

Chrono's eyes widened.

Silence.

Then a voice came from the darkness. Not loud. Not threatening. Almost like a whisper carried through an enormous distance.

"…You came early."

Chrono froze. His hand immediately moved toward his sword. The little fox's spiritual flame exploded brighter. Gran's fur stood on end. Glask raised his weapon.

Chrono stared into the darkness. "What?"

No answer.

He stepped forward. "Who are you?"

Silence.

Then the ancient heartbeat returned.

*THUMP.*

The entire underground structure shook. The circular door began closing.

Chrono immediately reached toward it. "Wait!"

Too late. The door *slammed* shut.

The black arrowhead fell from its socket.

*CLANG.*

Chrono caught it. He stared at the ancient object in his hand.

The System appeared.

---

**[Primary Objective Updated.]**

**[Investigate the Ancient Structure.]**

**[Status: Incomplete.]**

**[New Condition Detected.]**

**[The structure has recognized your existence.]**

---

Chrono's expression darkened. "Recognized me…"

He looked at the door. Not the world. Not the kingdom. Not the Beastkin.

*Him.*

Something inside that ancient structure had recognized him. And somehow — it had *expected* him to arrive.

The little fox quietly approached Chrono. Its nine tails wrapped around his leg.

Chrono looked down. Then smiled faintly. "Don't worry."

He looked back at the sealed door.

"We'll find out what's behind it."

Deep beneath the earth — something opened its eyes.

And for the first time in thousands of years —

*the ancient structure began to wake.*
