Chapter 273 - The Dark Mark and The Winged Guardian

The echo of the explosion rolled over the snow-covered rooftops of Hogsmeade, leaving a ringing silence in its wake.

Orion and Remus stood frozen in the street, their eyes locked on the rising pillar of thick, black smoke.

Before either of them could move, a secondary flash illuminated the sky. It wasn't the orange of fire or the white of an explosion. It was a sickly, virulent, unmistakable neon green.

A beam of magic shot upward from the epicenter of the smoke, piercing the heavy cloud cover. High above the village, the green light coalesced, expanding rapidly until it formed a colossal, glowing image that hung suspended in the sky.

A skull. And protruding from its mouth, thick and undulating like a living thing, was a massive serpent.

The Dark Mark.

Lupin staggered backward a half-step, his breath catching in a horrified gasp. "No," he whispered, the sound torn from his throat.

He didn't say another word. The former Marauder sprinted forward, his shabby robes whipping behind him as he ran toward the northern outskirts of the village with desperate, frantic speed.

Orion didn't hesitate. He fell into step right behind him, his dragon-hide boots finding purchase on the icy cobblestones.

They tore through the village, bypassing the main streets and cutting through narrow, snow-choked alleys.

They reached the base of the snowy hill that led up to the most haunted dwelling in Britain.

The Shrieking Shack looked like it had been struck by a localized earthquake. The front half of the dilapidated building was completely blown out, exposing the rotting, splintered interior. Black smoke poured from the wreckage, mingling with the falling snow.

And hovering directly above the shattered roof, casting a sickly green pallor over the entire scene, was the Dark Mark.

But the explosion and the Mark were not the most immediate threat.

The sky above the hill was swarming. The Dementors, drawn by the sudden, massive spike of terror, violence, and despair, had gathered en masse. There were dozens of them, circling the ruined shack like vultures over a fresh kill, their tattered cloaks snapping in the freezing wind.

The moment Orion and Remus crested the hill, breaking into the clearing, the horde noticed them.

The temperature plummeted into the realm of absolute, lung-searing zero. The frost on the grass instantly thickened into solid ice. A dozen Dementors broke off from the main circling pack and swooped down, gliding rapidly down the slope directly toward the two wizards.

Lupin didn't pause his sprint. He raised his wand, his face twisted in a mask of desperate, feral determination.

"EXPECTO PATRONUM!"

The brilliant, silver wolf erupted from his wand. It bounded forward, crashing bodily into the front line of the descending Dementors. The impact sent three of the creatures tumbling backward, their rattling breaths hissing in pain. The wolf snapped its jaws, driving back another two.

But the numbers were overwhelming. As the wolf pushed the center, the flanks of the Dementor formation simply flowed around it, continuing their descent toward Lupin and Orion.

Lupin gritted his teeth, sweat beading on his scarred forehead despite the freezing cold. Maintaining a corporeal Patronus against a swarm this dense was incredibly taxing. His magic was holding the line, but he couldn't cover the entire perimeter.

Two Dementors bypassed the wolf entirely, gliding swiftly toward Orion's right flank, their rotting hands reaching out from beneath their cloaks.

Orion stopped running. He planted his boots firmly in the snow.

He closed his eyes.

If this fails, Orion thought with cold, absolute clarity, I trigger Time. I pull Remus and run.

But he was feeling a strange, new confidence. The conversation with Lupin had unlocked a new door for him.

He dove into his 'Safe Room' and found the memory of a quiet, rainy evening at Malfoy Manor. He was sitting on a plush rug near the grand piano in the drawing room, wrapped in a blanket, his eyes closed as he simply listened to his mother, Narcissa, playing a slow, hauntingly beautiful melody. There was no Dark Lord. There were no expectations. There was just the music, the warmth of the fire, and the absolute, unshakeable certainty of peace.

He let the feeling wash over him, ignoring the freezing despair pressing against his skin. He didn't push the emotion; he just let it exist.

Orion opened his eyes, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips.

"Expecto Patronum," Orion whispered.

The magic didn't explode into a shield. It flowed.

A stream of brilliant, pure silver light poured from the tip of his Hawthorn wand. It swirled and coalesced in the air before him, expanding rapidly until it took form.

A massive, blindingly bright Swan materialized.

It was identical in size and regal bearing to his Animagus form, but rendered entirely in radiant, protective light. The swan let out a powerful, silent cry, flaring wings that stretched nearly eight feet across.

It launched itself forward.

The silver swan slammed into the two encroaching Dementors with the force of a battering ram. The creatures shrieked, thrown violently backward by the sheer, intense purity of the magic. The swan didn't stop. It banked sharply, its massive wings battering another Dementor away, before circling back to flank Lupin's wolf.

Lupin glanced over his shoulder. Seeing the magnificent avian guardian fighting alongside his wolf, a breathless, exhausted smile broke across his face.

Together, the two corporeal Patronuses formed an impenetrable, moving wall of silver light, physically driving the vanguard of the Dementor swarm back up the hill.

But the main horde was still circling the shack, a dark, suffocating cloud.

Just as the Dementors began to regroup, preparing for a secondary plunge, a third light ignited in the gloom.

It wasn't a flare; it was a sunburst.

From the pathway behind them, a colossal, spectral Phoenix erupted into the sky. It soared over Orion and Lupin, its silver wings trailing showers of brilliant, blinding light. It didn't even need to physically strike the Dementors. The sheer, overwhelming brightness and power radiating from the bird was enough.

The Dementor horde scattered, shrieking in agony as the Phoenix light burned away the darkness. They fled the hill entirely, retreating rapidly toward the distant mountains.

Orion and Lupin turned around.

Albus Dumbledore stood at the base of the hill, the Elder Wand raised high, blazing with residual magic. His face was set in lines of terrible, absolute fury.

Behind the Headmaster, a large contingent of Aurors, began to swarm up the hill. They moved with military precision, fanning out to secure the perimeter around the ruined shack.

Madam Amelia Bones strode purposefully up the path, her dark cloak snapping. She didn't look at the retreating Dementors. Her gaze was locked entirely on the sickly green skull still hovering malevolently in the sky above the wreckage.

It was a symbol she had not seen hanging over a battlefield in twelve years.

Kingsley Shacklebolt flanked her, his wand drawn and ready.

Orion lowered his wand. The silver swan ended its patrol, gliding gracefully back down to the ground. It landed softly in the snow beside Orion, folding its massive wings. It turned its long neck, looked directly into Orion's eyes for a brief, acknowledging moment, and then dissolved into mist.

Dumbledore walked slowly up the hill, his eyes sweeping over the two of them before settling on the smoldering remains of the Shrieking Shack.

"I am incredibly glad that you two are safe," Dumbledore said, his voice quiet, carrying the heavy weight of a leader arriving just a moment too late.

He looked up at the Dark Mark, the green light reflecting in his spectacles.

"But I fear," Dumbledore murmured, "that the peace we have enjoyed... has officially come to an end."
