Behind the Stage
Alyx had been in the audience, in the last row, with her sketchbook in her hands. Throughout the entire play, she had drawn. Not the play itself, but Lily's expressions. The concentration in her eyes, the passion with which she delivered her lines, the emotion when the audience laughed (at the right moments and the wrong ones).
After the show, she found Lily backstage, gathering her things.
"That was incredible," said Alyx.
Lily looked at her, surprised. "Really?"
"Yes. I mean, the play was a disaster, but you... you shone. You could tell you were giving it your all."
Lily felt her eyes sting. "Thanks, Alyx."
"It's the truth. I've been watching you prepare this for months. The rehearsals, the nerves, the doubts. And today, on stage, you were happy. That's what matters."
Lily hugged her. "You're the best."
"I know. That's why I love you."
Living Room, 2030
"Kids, there are moments in life that can't be told with words. Moments that exist only in the memory of the body, the skin, the shared heartbeat of two... or in this case, three hearts."
Ted Mosby pauses, with a smile his children don't quite understand.
"The night of Lily's play was special for many reasons. But the most special of all... well, that one didn't happen at the theater."
Ted, Marshall, and Lily's Apartment – 1:47 AM
The door closed behind them, and the outside world ceased to exist.
The apartment was dim, lit only by the soft city light coming through the window. Marshall was sitting on the sofa, a beer in his hand that he was barely drinking, watching the two women he loved enter.
"How's my favorite actress?" he asked softly.
Lily smiled, exhausted but radiant. "Tired, but happy."
Alyx dropped down next to Marshall, so close their legs touched. Lily, instead of sitting on the sofa, slid to the floor and rested her head on Alyx's lap, closing her eyes.
"It's been a long day," Lily whispered.
"But good," Alyx replied, her fingers beginning to stroke Lily's hair with a hypnotic gentleness.
Marshall watched the scene: Lily's head in Alyx's lap, Alyx's fingers moving slowly, the peace enveloping the room. He felt his chest fill with something warm, something he didn't have a name for but recognized as love.
"What do we do now?" asked Lily, without opening her eyes.
"I don't know. Watch a movie?" Marshall suggested.
"Too late," said Alyx.
"Order food?"
"I'm not hungry."
Silence settled between them, but it wasn't an uncomfortable silence. It was a dense silence, charged with something none of them dared to name.
Alyx's fingers continued stroking Lily's hair, tracing slow paths from her forehead to the nape of her neck. Lily let out a sigh—a small, contented sound—and relaxed further against Alyx's legs.
Marshall felt his hand move on its own. He reached for Alyx's free hand, the one not busy stroking Lily, and interlaced his fingers with hers. Alyx squeezed his hand in response, without taking her eyes off Lily.
Something changed in the air. A new tension, electric, that hadn't been there a moment ago.
Alyx was the first to move. She leaned her head down slowly, as if the gesture were the most natural thing in the world, and kissed Lily on the forehead.
Lily opened her eyes and looked at Alyx. Alyx held her gaze.
Another kiss, this time on the cheek. Slower, warmer.
Lily didn't move. Her breathing changed, became deeper, more aware.
The third kiss was on the lips.
It was soft, almost shy, as if Alyx were asking something without words. Lily responded by tilting her head slightly, opening her lips just enough for the kiss to deepen.
Marshall watched, a gentle smile on his lips. There was no jealousy in his gaze, only a kind of contented wonder, as if he were watching something beautiful that he knew was going to happen but that still surprised him.
When the kiss ended, Lily slowly sat up, turning to kneel in front of the sofa, facing them both. She looked at Marshall, then at Alyx, then at Marshall again.
"Come here," said Marshall, and his voice was a rough whisper. He gently pulled Alyx toward him.
Alyx let herself be pulled. She leaned into Marshall and kissed him—a kiss different from the one she'd given Lily. More urgent, deeper, hungrier. Marshall's hand found the nape of her neck, held her, guided her.
Lily watched now, kneeling on the floor, eyes bright. She saw how Marshall's hands traced Alyx's back, how Alyx melted against him, and felt her body respond in ways she couldn't control.
Marshall separated his lips from Alyx's, but only to look at her, to look at them both.
"To bed," he said. It wasn't a question.
