Self-referential containment shells multiplied, each one referencing the spatial signature of the others so that any attempt to break a single layer would only increase the tension across the rest. Pull one thread and the whole knot tightened. Cut one wall and the others grew thicker. The structure pulsed with a low, resonant frequency that distorted the dim light of the vertical gulf, bending it in slow spirals that made the air look like it was breathing.
