Aberforth slammed the note down on the desk and exploded.

"Albus, you absolute bastard! You run off to do whatever the hell you want and dump this whole goddamn mess on me? I ought to walk out right now!"

Tom and Ariana exchanged a glance, then leaned in to read the note over his shoulder.

It was short and to the point: "Aberforth, Hogwarts is yours for now. Just pretend I'm still here. McGonagall can handle the day-to-day stuff. Love, Albus."

Tom's ears twitched.

[So Dumbledore just ditched? What about the reward he promised me?]

Aberforth snorted and burned the note to ash.

"He didn't even follow through on what he promised me. Ran off so fast he probably went crawling back to his old flame."

Ariana tried to smooth things over. "Maybe he's out looking for a teacher for me?"

Aberforth didn't argue, but his eyes stayed on his sister. He still couldn't quite believe she was standing in front of him, alive and smiling, with that terrifying power sleeping inside her.

"Whatever. How are you holding up? That Obscurus—"

"It's fine," Ariana said softly. She let one finger dissolve into black mist, then pulled it back. "I've got it under control."

Aberforth exhaled. "Good. Keep it that way. Don't use it unless you have to."

He jerked his thumb toward the door.

"Since Albus isn't here, neither of you have a reason to stick around. Go eat. And keep your mouths shut about what happened in here."

He practically shoved them out of the office.

Outside, Ariana's smile faded. She didn't want history repeating itself if Dumbledore had really gone to find Grindelwald.

Tom patted her shoulder.

[Relax. As long as you're here, those three old men will just yell at each other. They won't actually throw down.]

Ariana laughed despite herself. "You make it sound like I'm about to die. I'm a ghost, remember? Ghosts don't die. Anyway, where are we going now?"

[Hagrid's hut. Harry and the others are probably already there with Norberta.]

Tom sounded almost proud.

[That dragon's growing fast and she's clingy as hell. If she wasn't so big and covered in scales, I'd be worried she'd never leave my side.]

Ariana smirked. "Sounds like she really likes you."

[I don't need that kind of attention.]

They headed toward Hagrid's hut at a normal walking pace. Tom could teleport, but sometimes the walk was worth it.

Inside the hut, Draco was completely absorbed in scrubbing Norberta's scales and feeding her strips of meat. He barely looked up when Harry's group arrived.

Harry and the others watched the scene with mixed feelings.

Norberta suddenly perked up and let out a sharp squeak, clearly asking where Tom was.

Hermione stroked the dragon's head. "By the way… are you sure she's a Norwegian Ridgeback? She doesn't have any spikes on her back."

Draco and Hagrid both looked awkward.

Hagrid insisted he'd checked the egg. It was definitely a Ridgeback.

Norberta huffed, then flexed. A row of sharp, poisonous spikes slid out along her spine. She showed them off for a second before tucking them away again.

Fire bloomed in the air above her head, forming words:

[I have spikes. They're just poisonous, so I keep them hidden most of the time.]

Ron leaned in, fascinated. "How the hell can she do that?"

[Because of my dad,] the fire spelled out proudly.

Hagrid looked ready to cry. He tried to hug her, but Norberta dodged him with a disgusted expression.

[Stop trying to hug me. And stop feeding me brandy mixed with chicken blood! It tastes disgusting!]

Hagrid looked crushed. "But the books said—"

[The books never met a dragon like me. I was born breathing fire and I can control it. Books don't know everything.]

Before anyone could respond, the door opened.

Tom walked in just as Norberta lost focus on her fire message. The little flame shot straight at him and nailed his tail.

Again.

Tom stared at his burning tail with pure exhaustion. He was getting way too used to this.

Norberta immediately looked guilty and shoved her head into his chest, apologizing in frantic squeaks.

Tom sighed, grew a new tail, and patted her head. He let it go.

Draco tried to hide his jealousy by changing the subject. "So what took you two so long?"

Tom glanced at Harry's group.

Harry shrugged. "We were talking about Norberta's species. Then we told them about the new Defense professor."

Draco's face fell. "Snape's not teaching it anymore?"

He'd been enjoying the easy points Slytherin got in Snape's Defense class.

Ron cut in. "New guy's name is Aberforth. Aberforth Dumbledore."

Ariana added quietly, "He's the headmaster's brother. And mine."

Draco blinked. "Aberforth… I've heard that name somewhere."

Hagrid's eyes widened. "Wait—the owner of the Hog's Head? He's teaching now?"

Ariana lifted her chin with pride. "He fought alongside my brother and Grindelwald back in the day. He's the real deal."

Tom nodded in agreement. The man was strong enough to survive that fight. That said plenty.
