Chapter 25 - Chapter 21

CHAPTER 21 —

> Swan House

Morning

Gray.

The rain hadn't stopped all night.

Forks woke wrapped in fog and water, as if the whole world wanted to keep sleeping.

Bella didn't.

She was still lying on her back, staring at the ceiling of her room.

Thinking.

Without blinking.

Without moving.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw it again.

The cracking of bones.

Skin tearing into fur.

The impossible size.

Steam escaping from his muzzle.

And those eyes.

The same brown eyes that looked at her every day in the hallways.

The same ones that had joked with her only hours before.

Jimmy.

A strange sound escaped her throat.

A short laugh.

Disbelieving.

She had taken a shapeshifter into the woods to force him to tell the truth.

It had been a great idea.

And the worst one.

She had come back touching the neck of a giant bear.

One that could split her in two.

Normal.

Very normal.

She covered her face with both hands.

Embarrassed.

Then she laughed again.

It didn't last long.

Because the moment the laughter faded… something else appeared.

Edward.

His icy skin.

The way he looked at her.

The hunger hidden in his voice.

The tension every time Logan was near.

The pieces were coming together far too fast.

And Bella hated that she had been the last to understand.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

—Bella? —Charlie's voice came from outside—. You still alive?

She moved her hands away.

—Depends on what you cooked.

Charlie opened the door slightly and stuck his head in.

He studied her for a few seconds.

—You look like you made bad decisions.

—That explains my genetics.

He snorted.

He stepped inside with a mug of coffee in his hand.

—You didn't come down for dinner last night.

Bella slowly sat up.

—I was busy.

—Doing what?

She thought about answering:

Finding out one of my classmates turns into a bear and that I probably like a vampire.

Instead, she said:

—Reading.

Charlie narrowed his eyes.

—That sounds even more concerning.

Bella grabbed the first pillow she found and threw it at him.

He caught it with one hand.

—Breakfast in ten minutes.

He turned toward the door, then stopped before leaving.

—And Bella.

—Yeah?

—I like Jimmy more every day.

Bella went still.

—It's Logan… he doesn't like being called that.

Charlie smiled to himself.

—That too.

He closed the door.

Bella let her head fall back.

Perfect.

Her father supporting the secret bear.

Wonderful.

> Kitchen

Twenty Minutes Later

Charlie flipped through the newspaper while he ate breakfast.

Bella stirred her cereal without appetite.

—You going to class today? —he asked without looking up.

—Yes.

—Miracle number two.

—Don't start.

Charlie took a sip of coffee.

—And Logan?

Bella looked up too fast.

—What about Logan?

—Nothing. Just asking. Didn't see him with you. —He glanced at her over the paper—. Yesterday you seemed pretty eager to see him.

Bella lowered her spoon.

She remembered saying goodbye the night before.

The rain falling between them.

Her clothes still damp.

The smell of the woods.

> Outside Swan House

Last Night

Logan was leaning against the truck, dressed again.

Wet hair.

A black hoodie Charlie had lent him, stretched too tight across the shoulders.

Bella watched him from the porch.

Not sure what to say now that she knew everything.

He broke the silence first.

—I won't see you for a couple of days.

Bella frowned.

—What?

—I have to go back.

—Back where?

Logan smiled faintly.

Tired.

—My old home.

Bella crossed her arms.

—Convenient time to disappear.

—Believe me, I'd rather stay.

—Then stay.

The words came out before she could stop them.

They both went still.

Logan looked at her differently.

Deeper.

More dangerous.

—Bella…

She looked away first.

—Why do you have to go?

He took a moment before answering.

—I left something of mine behind.

—What thing?

A drop of water slid from his hair to his jaw.

—Something important.

Bella hated him a little for answering like that.

—That means nothing.

—I know. I work hard to sound mysterious.

—Did it work?

She wanted to laugh.

She didn't quite manage it.

Logan stepped toward the porch.

Too close.

—I'll be back in two days.

—What if you're not?

—I will be.

—I don't like supernatural promises.

He tilted his head.

—Then keep this one instead.

Bella held his gaze.

He stepped closer again.

Very close.

She could feel his scent.

Bella tensed.

Logan lifted a hand and brushed his fingers across her cheek.

He spoke softly.

—I'm not going to lie to you again.

Bella's heart pounded hard.

She didn't answer.

She couldn't.

Logan stepped back, walked into the darkness of the rain… and disappeared among the trees without a sound.

As if he had always belonged there.

> Kitchen

Present

—Bella.

She blinked.

Charlie was looking at her.

—I asked if you were sick.

—No.

—Then stop staring at your cereal like it owes you money.

She pushed the bowl aside.

—I have to go.

—You didn't even eat.

—I'll get something later.

Charlie watched her as she headed upstairs.

—You're acting weird.

Bella grabbed her backpack without stopping.

—I'm in Forks. That's already normal.

> Forks High School

Late Morning

The bell rang, and the students began heading into the building through the rain.

The parking lot gleamed with water.

Bella turned off the truck and remained still for a few seconds.

She wasn't there for class.

She was there for answers.

She spotted the silver Volvo before she even got out.

Perfectly parked.

Perfect.

Silent.

Like its owner.

Edward Cullen was leaning against the driver's door, looking toward the woods.

His siblings stood beside him.

But Bella's attention was only on him.

Still.

Beautiful.

Dangerous.

And for the first time since she had met him…

Bella felt no fear.

She opened the truck door.

The sound made Edward turn his head.

His golden eyes locked onto her immediately.

And something in his expression changed.

As if he knew something was no longer the same.

Bella closed the door calmly.

She crossed the wet grass.

Walked toward him beneath Forks' gray sky.

Without looking away.

Without hesitation.

Edward slowly straightened.

He saw the intensity in her eyes.

The firmness of her steps.

The quick rhythm of her breathing.

Bella stopped in front of him.

For one instant, the world seemed to shrink until only the two of them remained.

Her gaze spoke before her lips did.

We need to talk.

Bella walked past him without stopping.

Her shoulder barely brushed his.

And she kept walking toward the darkness of the woods bordering the school.

Edward remained still for a second.

Then he watched her disappear between the trees.

He took a step forward.

Ready to follow her.

But a hand caught his arm.

Rosalie.

She held him firmly, a hard look in her eyes.

Jasper moved in front of him, blocking his path.

He gave a slight shake of his head.

—Edward, don't go, —Rosalie said, tightening her grip.

Alice stepped in gently.

She removed Rosalie's hand from his arm.

There was a brief pause.

Then she looked at Edward with a small, strange smile.

—He already decided.

> Forest Edge

Moments Later

Bella walked between the trees without looking back.

Wet branches brushed against her arms.

The moss-covered ground softened every step.

As she moved farther from the school, the sounds of voices and cars disappeared.

Only the forest remained.

Breathing around her.

Cold.

Alive.

She reached a small clearing covered in green.

Huge trunks blocked out the light.

Mist drifted low among the roots.

Bella stopped in the center.

Waited.

She heard distant birds.

The movement of something small in the brush.

The wind sliding through the high branches.

And then…

Something else.

A presence.

Her body felt it before her mind did.

As if every instinct woke at once.

A predator was near.

Bella didn't move.

She heard a soft step behind her.

Far too silent to be human.

Edward's scent spread through the damp air.

Cold.

Clean.

Dangerous.

She knew he was there.

Only a few feet away.

Watching her.

Waiting.

But Bella didn't turn around.

The silence between them tightened like a thread.

One second.

Two.

Her heart pounded hard in her chest.

Not from fear.

From certainty.

Then she spoke.

Her voice steady.

Low.

Without trembling.

—I know what you are.

Behind her, the whole forest seemed to hold its breath.
