Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: The Hunter's Commander

The warehouse fell into complete silence.

The only sounds were the crackling of broken lights and the settling dust from the explosions.

Commander Darius stood unmoving, his spear planted firmly in the concrete. Behind him, the Hunters waited without question, every eye fixed on Emerald.

He studied her for a long moment.

"So," he said at last, "this is the girl who has managed to stay hidden for sixteen years."

Emerald didn't lower her guard.

"You've been looking for me that long?"

"Longer."

His answer sent a chill through the room.

"You were only an infant when the order to eliminate the royal bloodline was given."

Sara stepped beside Emerald.

"If you're here to kill her, you'll have to get through all of us."

Darius glanced at the growing line of defenders.

Sara.

Sam.

Noah.

Lyra.

Kael.

The recruits.

A faint chuckle escaped him.

"Loyalty."

He almost sounded impressed.

"A rare thing."

Noah tightened his grip on his weapon.

"You talk too much."

Without warning, he charged.

Their weapons collided with a deafening clang.

Noah was skilled, but Darius moved with terrifying precision.

Three quick strikes.

One twist of the spear.

Noah's sword flew from his hands, skidding across the warehouse floor.

Before anyone could react, Darius stopped the tip of his spear inches from Noah's throat.

"You have courage," Darius said calmly.

"But courage without experience becomes recklessness."

He stepped back.

He hadn't come to kill Noah.

He had simply proven a point.

Emerald rushed forward, placing herself between them.

"No more."

Her mark glowed brightly, casting emerald light across the cracked floor.

Darius looked at it with quiet curiosity.

"So the curse truly is breaking."

"You know about the curse?"

"I know who cast it."

Emerald's heart pounded.

"My aunt."

Darius gave a slight nod.

"The Queen feared your power long before you were old enough to speak."

The recruits exchanged uneasy glances.

Emerald frowned.

"If you know she's the real threat... why are you hunting me instead of her?"

For the first time, Darius hesitated.

His silence spoke louder than any answer.

"You don't know everything," he finally said.

"The Hunters were founded centuries ago after a war between the human world and the Underworld. Thousands died because kings and queens believed power mattered more than peace."

His voice remained steady.

"We swore that no royal no matter how kind would ever have the chance to begin another war."

"I've never wanted a war," Emerald replied.

"I know."

The words stunned everyone.

Even Lyra looked confused.

Darius continued.

"I've read every report about you. You protect humans. You risk your life for strangers. You show mercy to enemies."

His gaze hardened.

"But history has taught us that even good rulers can become dangerous."

Emerald took a step forward.

"So you're willing to kill someone for what they might become?"

Before Darius could answer a scream echoed outside.

Then another.

Everyone froze.

One of the Hunters rushed through the doorway.

"Commander!"

Darius turned sharply.

"What happened?"

"The eastern squad..."

The Hunter struggled to catch his breath.

"They've been attacked!"

"By who?"

The soldier swallowed hard.

"The Queen's Shadow Guard."

A wave of confusion swept through the warehouse.

Lyra's face went pale.

"That can't be..."

"It can," Darius replied grimly.

"The Queen never intended to share power with us."

Another explosion erupted outside, much closer this time.

The warehouse trembled violently.

Dark purple flames suddenly burst through the shattered entrance.

From within them emerged figures cloaked in black armor etched with glowing crimson symbols.

Unlike the Hunters, these soldiers carried curved obsidian blades that seemed to absorb the surrounding light.

At their head stood a woman with long silver hair braided with black jewels.

A scar stretched across one eye, but her smile was cold and confident.

She looked first at Darius.

Then at Emerald.

"How convenient," she said smoothly.

"The last royal..."

Her eyes shifted to the Hunter commander.

"...and the greatest hunter."

She slowly drew her twin blades.

"I've been ordered to kill you both."

Darius lifted his spear.

Emerald raised her weapon.

For one impossible moment, the two enemies stood side by side, facing a threat neither had expected.

The silver-haired commander smiled.

"Today," she whispered, "the Queen ties up every loose end."

The Shadow Guard charged.

The battle had become a war.
