Rover waited until everyone was asleep.
Not because he was hiding it from them. After tonight, he would no longer hide things from Nanoe, he had promised himself that. It was because what he was about to do was something he had to do himself, alone, the way all the most important conversations of his life had taken place when he was by himself.
He went into the bathroom. Locked the door.
The large mirror above the sink reflected him back, a twenty-five-year-old man, a tired face, eyes calm to the point of being almost cold. Behind those eyes sat a question that had waited twenty-five years.
Rover laid his palm against the glass.
"I know you're listening." He said quietly. "You're always listening."
For three seconds, the mirror was only a mirror.
