Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Evolved

Day one. The nightmares started.

Jayden woke screaming. His eye blazing crimson. Power surging through him like lightning in a bottle.

Marcus grabbed him. "You're okay. You're "

"I can't stop it." Jayden's voice cracked. "It won't turn off."

His speed had settled at 19.4 units. Resting. Not fighting. Not overclocking.

Just existing.

43% of his peak remained. Permanently.

"That's not possible," Elena said.

Zain checked the essence readings. "His body adapted. Kept the growth."

"That's not how it works."

"For him it does."

Day two. The kingdom made it official.

Wanted posters. Five faces. 50,000 gold each.

"Fugitives. Dangerous. Approach with caution."

Marcus laughed bitterly. "We're worth a fortune."

"Dead or alive?" Cinna asked.

Elena read the fine print. "Alive preferred. Dead acceptable."

Great.

Day three. The nightmares got worse.

Jayden woke every hour. Screaming. Eye burning. Essence exploding outward in waves.

The barriers around the cabin flickered.

"He's going to give away our position," Zain said.

"He can't control it." Cinna tried healing him. Nothing worked. "It's like his body's evolving while he sleeps."

"Evolving into what?"

Nobody answered.

Day four. Dawn.

Elena shook Jayden awake. Hard.

"We're being ambushed. Can you walk?"

His eye snapped open. Crimson. Fully active.

"Yeah."

He was on his feet before she finished talking.

Outside essence signatures. Dozens. Closing fast.

"Academy forces?" Marcus asked.

"Worse. Guild mercenaries." Elena checked her weapons. "Someone hired professionals."

The first explosion rocked the cabin.

"MOVE!"

They ran for the back exit.

Jayden stopped.

His eye pulsed. Scanned everyone in the house.

[MARCUS: Speed 11.2]

[ELENA: Speed 11.8]

[ZAIN: Speed 13.2]

[CINNA: Speed 6.1]

Too slow. All of them.

The mercenaries were seconds away.

"Jayden, come on!"

He grabbed Marcus. Then Zain. Then Elena.

They barely had time to react before the world blurred.

Jayden moved.

19.4 units. His new baseline.

Faster than anyone here.

He'd become the fastest without even trying.

He deposited Marcus and Zain fifty yards into the forest. Came back. Grabbed Elena.

She gasped as they moved. "What the "

He set her down beside the others. Turned back.

Cinna stood frozen at the cabin door. Mercenaries breaking through the front.

No time.

Jayden's eye flared. Full analysis.

[Distance: 73 yards. Intercept time: 0.4 seconds.]

He moved.

The world became a streak.

He scooped Cinna up mid run. She yelped. Held on.

Behind them the cabin exploded.

Jayden didn't slow. Didn't look back.

The cave Elena had scouted two days ago. Three miles northeast.

Perfect for hiding. Defensible. Remote.

He ran the full distance in under two minutes.

Set Cinna down carefully.

She stared at him. "You... you just..."

"Told you I could walk."

The others arrived ten minutes later. Breathing hard. Shocked.

"You moved us all," Elena said. "In seconds."

"Had to."

"Your speed. It's not dropping."

"No. It's not."

Zain checked the cave entrance. "This'll work. For now."

They set up quickly. Barriers. Watch rotations. Emergency supplies Elena had stashed here days ago.

Marcus collapsed against the cave wall. "How long until they find us again?"

"Hours. Maybe a day if we're lucky." Elena pulled out a map. "We need to move farther. Out of the kingdom entirely."

"Where?"

"Ashenfell. The Deadlands. Nobody goes there willingly."

"There's a reason for that," Zain said.

"Yeah. It's the only place they won't follow."

Jayden sat at the cave mouth. Watching the forest.

His eye pulsed steadily now. Not flickering. Not dying.

Stable.

[Current status: Speed 19.4 units (base). Essence capacity: 67%. Growth rate: Accelerated. Threat level: MAXIMUM.]

Cinna joined him. "Thank you. For grabbing me."

"You're my team."

"I'm also the slowest. The weakest." Her voice dropped. "Maybe you should leave me behind."

"Never."

"Jayden "

"I said never." He looked at her. "We're in this together. All of us. Until the end."

She didn't argue. Just nodded.

Behind them, Elena and Zain were arguing about routes. Marcus was sharpening his gauntlets.

They looked like refugees.

Hunted. Exhausted. Desperate.

But still fighting.

Jayden's eye flickered once. Crimson fading to brown.

Then back to crimson.

The evolution wasn't done.

His body was still changing. Still adapting. Still breaking every rule.

And somewhere out there, Theron was hunting them.

The kingdom wanted them dead.

The world feared what he was becoming.

But none of that mattered.

Because Jayden had finally understood something.

He wasn't trying to prove he wasn't a monster anymore.

He was trying to survive long enough to choose what kind of monster he'd become.

His eye burned bright in the darkness.

And deep in the cave, five fugitives planned their next impossible escape.
