Chapter 98: Repelling
After firing a single blast, Logan didn't pause for a second. He immediately grabbed Zhu Peiniang and bolted, having no intention of staying to check the results of his shot.
Creatures like Legiana, in order to gain superior flight capabilities, had to sacrifice hard scales and a robust physique. To keep their body weight as light as possible for aerial agility, they were even remarkably restrained in their diet, typically eating only once a day in the morning.
Consequently, Legiana were significantly more fragile than other Flying Wyverns in the same ecological niche. If that same blast had hit a Rathalos, it might have only caused minor to heavy injury; but for a Legiana, that one shot was enough to take out more than half its life.
Unfortunately, there wasn't just one Legiana circling in the sky. Furthermore, Logan's Lightning Cannon could only fire a single shot at short intervals.
After all, using electricity to pierce through the air required a massive amount of energy, which was a heavy drain on Logan himself. Moreover, he was carrying four Grimalkynes on his back; for their safety, he couldn't recklessly deploy his full electromagnetic field.
The two giant beasts threw out their powerful limbs, sprinting across protruding rocks and steep crags. Relying on their sheer physical strength, they leaped continuously, descending rapidly along the mountain terrain.
The shot Logan had just fired had undoubtedly served as a massive deterrent to the Legiana above.
They hovered in the sky, wings flapping incessantly. Large amounts of blue liquid secreted from special glands in their wing membranes. Accompanied by the beating of their wings, gusts of bone-chilling wind kicked up. A patch of wild grass stubbornly surviving in a stone crevice was instantly covered in a layer of crystal-clear ice after being grazed by the freezing gale.
Under this cold assault, a layer of white frost soon coated the scales of Logan and Zhu Peiniang. Fortunately, they possessed thick scales, tough skin, and a heavy layer of fat. This triple protection ensured they wouldn't suffer frostbite in such a short window.
At that moment, one Legiana, possessing keen observation, spotted that Logan's skill was on "cooldown." It suddenly tucked its wings and dived toward Logan like an arrow released from a bow. Its long legs extended straight out, claws as sharp and hard as black iron aimed directly at Logan's neck, stamping down with heavy force.
This was a common hunting tactic for raptors—using the powerful impact of a dive to snap a prey's spine, instantly stripping them of their ability to resist.
But this tactic was completely ineffective against Logan.
The moment the Legiana pounced, his ten-meter-long tail whipped upward like a scorpion's sting. The sharp blade at the end of the tail—formed by numerous irregular, jagged serrations through a process of "sloughing self-sharpening"—glinted with a cold, murderous light under the sun.
Seeing things take a turn for the worse, the diving Legiana frantically flapped its wings, forcibly altering its flight path. Despite this, Logan's tail still grazed its belly, leaving a shallow bloodstain.
Just then, a massive protruding rock appeared ahead. Due to the material and long-term weathering, the section touching the ground had peeled away, forming a large inward-facing hollow space.
Logan's eyes lit up. He immediately led Zhu Peiniang and dove inside. Their heads and backs were now shielded by thick rock walls. If the Legiana wanted to continue the attack, they would have to force a breakthrough from the front.
Simultaneously, Logan gave his body a hard shake. The several Grimalkynes rolled off him like puffballs, quickly hiding behind scattered rubble. Without the concern of protecting the felines, the electromagnetic coils on Logan's body unfolded without reservation, layer upon layer, densely surrounding him.
In the sky, the piercing, shrill cries of the Legiana rang out. On the ground, the crackle of electricity popped and hissed.
The persistent Legiana continued to hover above, occasionally swooping past the opening of the hollow. Every time they flew by, they exhaled a white, chilling mist that drifted into the cave.
Logan placed his massive body in front of Zhu Peiniang. The static electricity accumulating in the air danced across his surrounding electromagnetic lines, generating intense heat.
The moment the surging white mist approached his body, it rapidly vaporized, rising as wisps of steam. Even the ice crystals hanging from his scales quickly melted into droplets under the heat, dripping onto the ground.
At this moment, the electromagnetic wires on his body seemed to have turned into high-power heating elements. If used to boil water, they could likely supply a large-scale bathhouse.
The intense heat wave pushed back the encroaching cold wind. Meanwhile, the electromagnetic coils at Logan's tail wound together once more into the shape of a cannon barrel. A bright blue-white light began to glow within—a sign that powerful energy was once again converging.
Seeing this, the Legiana circling in the air scattered instantly as if spooked. The tragic result of the previous Legiana being hit was still fresh in their minds; none of them wanted to follow in its footsteps and take such a hit.
After a brief standoff, seeing they could do nothing to Logan, the Legiana let out an unwilling cry. With a violent flap of their wings, they caught the rising air currents. Like kites, their bodies soared higher and higher until they finally disappeared over the horizon.
"Good thing it was a pack of Legiana this time. If it had been a Rathalos or a Khezu, it would have been a real nightmare."
Logan stopped charging his energy. The lightning surrounding him dissipated, and the unfolded coils slowly retracted into a more concealed state.
He glanced in the direction the Legiana had vanished, but he didn't choose to leave immediately. Instead, he turned and let out a low growl to the four Grimalkynes hiding behind the rubble, telling them to stay hidden and not expose themselves. Then, he led Zhu Peiniang and sprinted out of the cave.
Logan wasn't the type to take a beating without hitting back. While he couldn't deal with the ones flying in the sky for now, the one he had shot down at the very beginning wouldn't be flying anytime soon.
As the two giant beasts ran at full tilt, the mountain rocks blurred beneath their feet. Before long, Logan and Zhu Peiniang returned to the place where they first encountered the Legiana. They leaped onto a protruding boulder and looked out into the distance. Below them, they could clearly see a blue figure struggling to crawl along the ground.
