"Yield."
The word did not echo.
It settled into the bones of the battlefield.
Kael's breathing slowed.
Not from calm.
From exhaustion.
The demon ring tightened another step. Shields locked. Spears angled inward. Void energy hummed low along their edges, ready to discharge at a single signal.
Tharion did not rise.
Golden light flickered weakly along cracked scales, then dimmed again.
Kael felt it.
The shift.
If Tharion fell—
The line would collapse entirely.
The warlord stepped forward, cleaver dragging sparks across ruined stone.
"You cannot protect what you cannot sustain," he said.
Nyxara watched silently now.
No taunts.
No whispers.
Only assessment.
The void-general's hand remained raised, distortion condensing slowly into a compressed sphere of spatial collapse.
Kael tried to pull the silver dragon forward.
It answered faintly.
A weak pulse.
His sword flickered once more in his hand — barely more than a translucent outline.
Behind the demon ring, Malenie saw the formation close.
Her breath caught.
"No," she whispered.
She surged forward, blade igniting white-gold once more. Flame carved a narrow corridor through demon ranks as she forced her way toward the center.
Lira followed, dragging two wounded fighters and shouting for the remaining soldiers to anchor on her position.
Maelor planted his staff and began weaving something far more dangerous than stabilizing sigils.
He was no longer reinforcing the field.
He was preparing to rupture it.
The warlord lunged.
Kael barely raised his failing blade in time.
The cleaver struck.
Silver light shattered completely.
The sword vanished from his hand.
The impact threw him backward into the dirt beside Tharion.
The demon ring closed the final gap.
Spears leveled inches from Kael's throat.
The void-general's sphere intensified, space folding inward around it.
Nyxara took one step closer.
"Yield," she repeated softly.
Kael's vision blurred.
His chest burned.
Not with flame.
With emptiness.
For the first time since awakening the silver dragon—
He could not feel it clearly.
It felt distant.
Muted.
As though disappointed.
The warlord lifted his cleaver for the final strike.
And Tharion moved.
It was not fast.
It was not glorious.
It was desperate.
With a roar that tore his damaged lungs raw, Tharion surged upward from the ground and threw himself over Kael's body.
The cleaver came down.
It struck Tharion's back fully.
Golden scales exploded in fragments of light.
The blade cut deep.
Tharion collapsed again—
—but did not move aside.
He shielded Kael completely.
The void-general released the distortion sphere.
Maelor screamed and slammed his staff down.
The ground between them detonated in a surge of arcane backlash. The distortion sphere collided with Maelor's counter-ritual mid-flight.
Reality folded violently.
The explosion blasted the demon ring outward in a shockwave of shattered geometry.
Spears snapped.
Shield walls broke formation.
Kael felt the pressure ease for half a second.
Half a second was enough.
Malenie burst through the fractured line, white flame spiraling around her like a storm mantle. She planted herself beside Kael and drove her blade into the earth.
Light erupted outward in a blinding radial surge.
Demons nearest them were thrown back violently.
Nyxara shielded herself midair, wings crossing in defense.
The warlord staggered but remained standing.
The shadow-dragon recoiled from the flare.
Lira reached them seconds later, dragging two more soldiers into the forming circle of light.
Maelor staggered forward, blood running from his nose and mouth.
"That was everything," he rasped.
The protective field flickered.
Unstable.
Temporary.
Tharion lay unmoving atop Kael.
Golden light barely pulsing.
Kael felt warm blood soaking into his armor.
His breath hitched.
"Grandfather…" he whispered.
No answer.
The demon army reformed outside the unstable circle, disciplined even after the blast.
Sereth did not intervene.
He watched.
The warlord stepped forward again to the edge of the light.
He did not attack.
He waited.
Because they all knew—
The barrier would not last.
Kael's hands trembled as he tried to push himself upright beneath Tharion's weight.
His silver aura did not return.
It remained faint.
Distant.
He looked around.
Malenie bleeding at the shoulder.
Maelor barely standing.
Lira pale and shaking.
The sixty reduced and exhausted.
And Tharion—
Still shielding him even in collapse.
Something inside Kael twisted painfully.
Not rage.
Not pride.
Guilt.
He had awakened power.
He had burned bright.
But in this moment—
Others were paying for it.
The barrier flickered violently.
Cracks of void energy began eating at its edges.
The warlord lifted his cleaver again.
Not rushed.
Inevitable.
Kael closed his eyes briefly.
He did not feel legendary.
He did not feel chosen.
He felt small.
Very small.
When he opened them—
The silver dragon stirred faintly again.
Not roaring.
Listening.
And for the first time—
Kael did not command it.
He asked.
Quietly.
"Are you still with me?"
Outside the failing barrier, the demon army advanced once more.
The grind was not finished.
And neither was he.
