Chapter 508 - Inefficient Interaction

The air pressure inside Guilliman's office plummeted to freezing point. The power glaives held aloft by the Custodians flickered, casting tiny arcs of lightning mere inches from Ersen's face. Yet the former member of the Word Bearers seemed entirely oblivious to the lethal threat. His gaze pierced through the interlocking blades, locking unyieldingly onto the glowing optical sensors of Axion's mechanical chassis.

Through his tactical energy-spectrum overlays, however, Axion discerned something anomalous: a faint, shimmering halo of golden light clung to the periphery of Ersen's silhouette.

"Lord Guilliman," Ersen spoke, his voice bearing the harsh, metallic rasp of grinding iron. "Do you perchance recall a maxim the Emperor oft repeated during the bygone days of the Unification Wars?"

"When the stars plunge into boundless night, it is the mortal frame that must transform into a torch to illuminate the path ahead."

Axion made no physical movement, yet within his internal sub-processors, vast torrents of data surged through high-speed logic-cores until a definitive correlation was achieved.

This specific phrase had appeared multiple times within the personal diaries of the Emperor. It seemed to have originally been spoken by Malcador the Sigillite, who used it to guide the Master of Mankind during His earliest trials.

Guilliman's pupils contracted slightly.

This maxim was drawn directly from the Emperor's private journals, documents that had never been unveiled to the wider Imperium. Beyond the Emperor Himself, only his Primarch brothers had ever been privy to those words.

Yet, an immediate surge of profound suspicion roiled within the Lord Regent's mind. Lorgar knew this phrase. Ersen was a veteran who had marched alongside his gene-sire. Given how intensely Lorgar had once venerated the Emperor, it was entirely plausible he had treated every utterance from the Emperor's lips as absolute scripture, passing it down to his chosen sons. It would not be strange for his progeny to know it.

Thud. Thud.

Heavy, rhythmic impacts shook the flagstones outside the chamber.

A holy Contemptor Dreadnought strode into the grand hall. Its massive chassis was draped in countless strips of ancient parchment detailing centuries of hard-won glories and battlefield honors. These purity seals, affixed with crimson wax, stood out starkly against the burnished, golden armor plates of the towering war-engine.

"Honored ancient," the Custodian Guards murmured in unison, offering deep, ritualistic deference to this venerable relic of the Legio Custodes. Yet beneath their discipline, a thread of confusion lingered. Under normal operational parameters, these glorious, entombed ancients were rarely awoken for domestic security breaches.

As if registering the unspoken queries of his battle-brothers, the Dreadnought's vox-emitter arrays rumbled with a deep, sonorous resonance.

"I am Fegrath, Sacred Bastion of the Master of Mankind, servant of His divine will, and edge of His martial wrath."

"By higher decree, I have been brought forth to oversee the resolution of this prison breach."

In truth, Captain-General Trajann Valoris was currently within the Sanctum Imperialis, offering his solemn confessions and taking responsibility for his deep oversight directly before the Golden Throne. The ancient warriors who had been awoken to counter the initial daemonic incursion were not yet ready to return to their slumbers. Living relics like Fegrath, who had slept for centuries, despised meaningless dormancy; they craved any opportunity to spend the remaining embers of their lives in active service to the Emperor.

The Contemptor Dreadnought swept his optical array across the assembled gathering. He paused briefly to evaluate Axion's colossal mechanical frame, which rivaled his own in sheer mass, before training his multi-lens sensor suite upon Ersen, who stood pinned at the center of the room.

"Wayward son of the Traitor Legions," the Dreadnought boomed, "expose the mechanics of your trickery. By what foul method did you breach the psychic dampeners of the Dark Cells to manifest within these coordinates?"

Ersen remained perfectly composed. "I merely follow the Emperor's grand design. I appear where the Master of Mankind deems my presence necessary. This is nothing less than His divine intervention."

Inside the chassis of the Dreadnought, auxiliary cogitator arrays whirred into motion. A Word Bearer. Before Fegrath was interred within this sarcophagus, he had clashed with these traitors on numerous battlefields. Those wretched traitors were notoriously cunning, possessing an insidious capacity for deception that had once even evaded the information networks of the Eyes of the Emperor.

Fegrath recalled his final deployment. It had been logged as a standard drop to purge a xenos infestation threatening an Imperial sub-sector. Instead, they had been ambushed by a hidden coven of Thousand Sons Sorcerers. Foul warp-craft had torn his transport vehicle apart. Of the four Custodians in his squad, two were annihilated instantly.

He and his sole surviving battle-brother had crawled from the burning wreckage with catastrophic wounds. Though they ultimately executed their objectives and crushed the traitors with their bare hands, the compounding internal trauma proved fatal. Upon his return to Terra, his broken flesh was entombed within this glorious, ancient war-plate.

Fegrath continuously analyzed Ersen while reviewing the telemetry data newly beamed to his internal display. The wardens of the Dark Cells had detected a massive localized psychic tide within one of the deepest tiers, a phenomenon identical to the ambient warp-resonance found only within the Sanctum Imperialis.

When the wardens breached the cell door, they found nothing but a scattered pile of shattered psychic stasis components. The metal was fractured and twisted, bearing the unmistakable warp-burns of an incredibly vast, explosive discharge, as though the containment field had been ruptured from the inside out by sheer, overwhelming pressure.

The prisoner who should have been securely bound within those dampeners had vanished entirely. Tracking the lingering psychic trace, the energy trail did not extend outward through the corridors. The Custodians had sprinted through subterranean passages to intercept the anomaly, resulting in this current confrontation.

The duration between Ersen's disappearance from his cell and his materialization in Guilliman's chambers was less than a handful of minutes. Yet the traitor stood before them with an attitude far too open and unshielded. His psychological profile defied every established behavioral index of a standard heretic.

To Axion, this inefficient standoff was an unacceptable expenditure of time. The logic-loops of an Iron Man had no tolerance for dramatic riddle-solving or human posturing.

His massive mechanical chassis lurched forward.

Fegrath immediately raised his twin-linked twin lascannon, leveling the heavy barrels directly at Axion in a wary defensive stance.

Axion's massive hydraulic arm reached out, giving the Dreadnought's armored shoulder a firm, familiar pat, a gesture uncannily resembling an old comrade greeting a lifelong friend.

The Contemptor Dreadnought's massive frame shuddered. Slowly, his joints locked and his weapon drifted aside as he stepped helplessly out of the path.

Simultaneously, the surrounding Custodians completely lost control of their physical movements. High-efficiency structural calculation modules within Axion's central core emitted a low, sub-audible hum, seizing the sub-routines of every suit of power armor in the room. The Emperor's finest were instantly transformed into paralyzed spectators, locked entirely inside their own ceramite shells.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Guilliman demanded. He and his two Bladeguard companions watched in utter bewilderment as the Custodians smoothly stepped back to clear a path, all while shouting oaths of fury and frustration through their vox-links.

Axion had effortlessly usurped command of both the Contemptor Dreadnought's internal systems and the power armor of the Custodians, effectively sentencing them to stand fast on the sidelines. The electronic muscle-bundles pressed tightly beneath their armor plates held their limbs in an unbreakable vice. In this instance, the peerless engineering of the Custodian wargear merely served to create a more flawless, inescapable prison.

Axion advanced until he loomed over Ersen. His mechanical forearm rapidly shifted configurations, retracting the heavy manipulation digits and replacing them with a bizarre, ring-shaped apparatus that descended over Ersen's skull. A faint, systemic luminescence pulsed along the machine's chassis.

Cough!

Ersen violently convulsed, spraying a mouthful of dark blood across the floor before plunging into immediate unconsciousness. Crimson began to seep simultaneously from his eyes, nose, and ears.

Axion caught the collapsing Astartes with a secondary mechanical claw. A hidden compartment in the Iron Man's chassis clicked open, deploying a gleaming injector filled with a glowing dose of the Panacea. The needle slammed into Ersen's torso.

Though the legionary remained comatose, his erratic breathing gradually stabilized into a rhythmic, measured cadence. Across his flesh, the complex web of geometric ritual tattoos began to fade, dissolving into nothingness beneath the soft, chemical glow of the drug.

Even his facial structure began to shift, rewriting itself at a fundamental cellular level.

Monitoring the biological collapse, Axion's diagnostic sensors registered an even more profound anomaly: the Word Bearer gene-seed within Ersen's body was being systematically targeted and destroyed by the Panacea solution. The corrupted, alien gene-sequences were being consumed and broken down into base proteins, while the native psychic resonance within his soul began to swell exponentially, free of its genetic shackles.

Data entry finalized. Anomalous physiological status logged.

"Memory extraction concluded. Neural trauma successfully mitigated. Commencing re-evaluation of subject assets," the synthesized monotone of the Iron Man echoed flatly across the silent, paralyzed room.
