Chapter 419 - The Anomaly

This megalopolis represented a singular, highly specialized experiment conducted prior to the dissolution of the Federation.

Metals saturated by the volatile energies of the Warp inevitably exhibited bizarre tendencies to fuse. In the material universe, such compromised materials would suffer rapid energy dissipation, ultimately culminating in structural decomposition and elemental reversion. To circumvent this, the Federation had bypassed reality entirely, directly subverting the laws of physics by submerging vast quantities of raw materials into the Immaterium to undergo forced warp-saturation. It was from these tainted, warp-fused materials that the colossal city had been constructed.

To anchor this gargantuan structure within the shifting tides of the Empyrean and prevent it from being swept away by violent warp-surges, the Federation had gone so far as to drag an entire neutron star into the Warp. This specially modified celestial body was impaled through its central axis by a massive megastructure, suspended beneath the city like a trinket on a key chain. This artificially driven, colossal mechanism was engineered to periodically force the star into high-speed rotation.

Driven to hyper-velocity, the neutron star erupted with staggering amounts of energy, broadcasting an incredibly potent, piercing pulse signal. In the material universe, such natural stellar phenomena were classified as highly radioactive pulsars. Only materials whose physical properties had been fundamentally warped and hardened by the raw power of the Immaterium could endure the unimaginable stresses of such a Federation operation.

Because the neutron star was artificially driven, its pulse signals followed a rigorous, pre-programmed cadence. The star maintained a precise, designated rotational velocity, continuously emitting cyclical, fluctuating ultra-high-frequency pulses. This allowed the Federation's specialized observation instruments to triangulate and calibrate their exact coordinates within the Warp at any given moment.

Aboard the Heart of the Forge, the replicated consciousness matrix of Axion easily deduced the ultimate fate of this facility. Following the collapse of the Federation amidst the fires of civil war, relevant data had been either plundered or utterly destroyed. A secret research installation hidden deep within the depths of the Warp was simply left to drift, entirely forgotten by a disintegrating civilization.

Axion attempted to interface directly with the city's primary mainframe via data-conduits, but the central sapient core appeared to be trapped in a state of deep hibernation. The automated feedback arrays did nothing but endlessly cycle meaningless welcome protocols, yielding no actionable data of value.

Determined to uncover what secrets might still be entombed within the research centre, the Heart of the Forge deployed a heavy transport vessel laden with several Adaptive Combat Cores. This was the Warp; any conventional machine entity would face immediate systemic corruption and material fusion the moment it crossed the threshold of the Geller field. The Adaptive Combat Cores, equipped with localized temporal regression manipulation, were uniquely suited for this hazardous reconnaissance.

The transport quickly cleared the launch bays of the Heart of the Forge, punching through the perimeter of the massive Geller field and plunging into the turbulent eddies of the warp-tides.

A highly specialized star port facility jutted from the flank of the colossal city. However, due to the gargantuan displacement of the Heart of the Forge, the berths were entirely useless to the mothership. Judging by the structural design of the star port's docking apparatus, any vessel capable of journeying to this research facility had almost certainly been custom-built. The docking clamps and various modular umbilical systems shared no common architecture with any star port recorded in Axion's extensive databases.

Fortunately, the star port had been provisioned with independent launch and landing platforms compatible with smaller atmospheric craft and transports. With its thruster wash dying down, the transport shuddered slightly as it touched down on the vast, desolate landing pad under the authority of a temporary access clearance.

Artificial gravity generators were evidently still operational here.

As the heavy assault ramps slammed down, four metallic spheres rapidly deployed from the hold. Massive, sweeping towers, a distinct interstellar traffic control hub, and sprawling complexes of architecture sat entirely silent beneath the twisted, kaleidoscopic backdrop of the Warp, lending the entire vista a deeply surreal, spectral quality.

An automated, double-decker mag-lev transit vehicle soon glided onto the platform. Observing the still-functioning automated personnel transport system, Axion compiled a rapid succession of diagnostic queries and checklists.

The Adaptive Combat Cores immediately reconfigured their geometry. The four metallic spheres, each standing nearly ten meters tall, fractured and reconstituted into thirty sub-units apiece, forming a detachment of one hundred and twenty standard humanoid automata. These figures possessed neither facial features nor internal biological anatomy, their blank, severe silhouettes blending seamlessly into the sterile, unliving environment.

As these sub-units filed into the transit vehicle, Axion immediately detected a glaring structural anomaly.

From the exterior, the transport possessed only two visible decks. Yet, upon entry, the internal space spanned a full six distinct tiers. The interior appointments were stark, adhering to the severe, minimalist utilitarian aesthetic favored by Federation engineers. There was a complete absence of dust or foreign debris within the chassis, though the interior was entirely devoid of atmosphere.

The vehicle soon engaged, a faint, rhythmic hum vibrating through the hull as it pulled away. The sub-units were systematically distributed across every tier of the vehicle to balance the load. There were no conventional viewport crystals; instead, the bulkheads were lined with extensive arrays of two-way feeds displaying the interior and exterior environments simultaneously. Even during the height of the Federation, humanity had been acutely aware of the mortal peril of looking directly into the raw, unshielded Warp.

Uncertain of the operational parameters of the city's localized sapient core, Axion refrained from any high-risk data intrusions. If a localized swarm of nanites were to aggressively consume the vehicle and trigger an adversarial response from the city's central intelligence, the potential losses would be incalculable.

When the transit vehicle finally glided to a halt, the lights of a towering, silent monolith ahead began to flicker to life.

The sapient machine automata disembarked from the vehicle and passed through a massive pressure airlock. A sharp hiss of atmospheric pressurization echoed through the chamber as the luminescent runes on the console slowly shifted from crimson to emerald. The heavy blast doors parted, revealing a vast, echoing reception hall.

Deep within the adjacent bulkhead, a concealed alcove retracted, revealing a mechanical unit styled in the likeness of a service caste drone. As the internal locking mechanisms disengaged to deploy the machine, a sudden, violent structural failure occurred.

Clang!

The harsh, heavy screech of protesting metal reverberated through the grand hall. The automaton collapsed forward, exposing a gaping, jagged breach torn through its spinal chassis. It had been violently sabotaged long ago.

As the chassis struck the floor, a soft, synthetic chime chimed through the acoustics of the hall:

[Service-class Iron Man—Unit UX-81 malfunction detected. Initiating reclamation protocols.]

A small, automated utility drone, measuring less than thirty centimeters, emerged from a low aperture in the wall. It braced the ruined chassis of UX-81, dragging it back into the recess from which it had fallen. Heavy mechanical clamps snapped onto the unit's shoulders and lower extremities, locking it back into the storage rack before the automated bulkhead slid shut.

The small drone swiftly swept away the scattered metal shavings and minor components left on the floor, vanishing back into the wall aperture a moment later.

[Deploying replacement guide Iron Man.]

This time, however, no further announcements echoed through the hall. No secondary Iron Man emerged from the dark.

Axion had no intention of waiting. According to standard Federation architectural doctrine, the rear of the primary complex would house a dedicated logistics and storage vault, packed with an abundance of mechanical spare parts and additional Iron Man units.

The sapient machine automata advanced down a grand, sweeping corridor, only to find the blast doors sealing the passage to the broader research complex locked down tight.

Across the reinforced plasteel face of the barrier, a line of specialized warning runes flashed in an ominous, rhythmic pulse:

[HYPERSPACE FOLDING APPARATUS MALFUNCTION]

[RESEARCH CENTRE DEPLOYED IN PERIMETER LOCKDOWN]

[ALL PERSONNEL ENTRY STRICTLY PROHIBITED]

[ENFORCING SPECIAL DICTUM TWELVE]
