Chapter 68 - Ideas on VR

Since Layla was gone I was able to get to work gaining experience for the new things. Those things being the fabrication machine, the two new AI, the solar panels, the satellite, and the AR glasses.

All of them have gotten an upgrade before, today I was going to get their second upgrade.

I started by fiddling around with the fabrication machine, I need to find a way to gain experience without having to laser stuff.

I managed to find a way in less than five minutes. I could simply run diagnostics, for hours on end.

All of the other things are kind of tied together, so for them I plan on building a bunch of random designs and plugging them into the AI to see what happens.

After 3 hours, I came to a fun conclusion.

I realized while running the aerodynamics AI, that if I applied the AI right I could use it in VR.

Well, if I could create full dive VR. Because the AI works using code and math to simulate air flow, weather, and even heat. Once I applied that to the 3D rendered program it created a "virtual world".

So in essence I had already created a part of what I would need to create VR, I would just need to figure out how to actually make full dive technology.

Which is kind of ironic because I had already come up with a way to do that over a decade ago in 2014.

I had watched an anime for the 1000th time and wanted to make it a reality, so I started research.

My idea was limited by the technology of the time, and what I knew as a teenager.

My idea however was not full dive. I recognized early on that that was impossible with any kind of modern technology. So, I decided for a practical application of touch, things like smell and taste I could figure out later.

So my idea was to "jack in" to the nervous system in the base of the skull. Basically, the idea was to hijack the signals being sent by the brain and have the computer prevent them from being sent to the body. Then use the signals to move the in game character.

Then if the character touched anything the computer would send a signal back to the brain as feedback.

I had already come up with how to get the data for the computer to know what signal to send and what that signal would look like. You would just take the signal created on the other end and read them.

Say with a feather or a piece of bark, you would rub it on a person's hand or skin to create a "feeling" that would be sent to the brain. But like the other way, be hijacked by the computer and read. That way you could program any tree in the game to have a "bark feeling".

The real problem was I couldn't figure out the hardware part of the equation. Because I couldn't figure out how to block, send, or receive nervous system signals without a permanent jack built into the base of the skull.

And I doubted anyone would take such a risky procedure. Which really crushed my childhood dreams.

People are just so unaventurous, it's sad.

Anyway, over the course of the decade as new technology was released, my ideas kept flowing.

Like with the chip implanted into the brain. That was something I could work with, but that only allowed access to a part of the brain not all of it.

Then there was a breakthrough. The release of the technology that could "see" people's dreams.

This was the idea. That is if we could read people's brain waves and interpret them to such a degree. Then we could utilize that to try and interfere with their dreams. Think of lucid dreaming but it was a designed game that you could play and interact with.

There are definitely some problems, like people having to be asleep to play. Or how to get them to lucid dream without drugs or medication.

But if I can upgrade the technology enough maybe I could interfere with and read brain waves to the extent that I could have them "enter" the game. When in reality it is just manipulating a character while you are in a dream like state.

You would have all of the feedback and senses from what was shown to you without any of the risk.

The risk, being trapped in a VR game or it frying your brain. If the power goes out then you just wake up. Probably with a killer headache and confusion but otherwise just fine.

Yeah, I'm really starting to like that idea more and more.

Implementation and building the hardware is going to be a pain but I think it is manageable.

Though I think that plan will have to wait until after the RAM business takes off, because I will probably need way higher technology than is currently on the market.

Anyway, time to get back to grinding out experience.

I finished the 16 hour grind and I haven't seen or heard anything from Layla.

I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

Good, if she is sleeping and I got to upgrade the stuff.

Bad, if something happened to her on the way there or back.

But I doubt it, she is a good driver.

While waiting for Layla to return I fell asleep.

The next morning I woke up sore to the sound of the door to the warehouse being opened.

Layla seemed to be in a slight panic when she saw me, "Oh my god. I'm so sorry. I didn't realize how long I slept for."

"Nope. It's ok. I like sleeping on metal."

"Seriously, I'm so sorry. I slept for a solid 22 hours."

"Yeah, it's ok. You just forgot to give me a tin cup to rattle on the bars."

"Pff, sure ok. As long as you're fine."

"Yep, I'm fine. A little sore, but I managed to optimize everything. It should all be running a whole lot better. I also thought up a way to utilize some stuff in other industries, which is a win."

"Sounds like you had a productive day"

"I certainly did. There's only so much you can do when you are caged up and neglected."

"This pile of takeout boxes says otherwise."
