Chapter 85: Less Human

Rimuri's arms were still around his when the room finally settled back into silence processing what just happened.

In his head, the other voice was already working.

«Report. Revival of the deceased requires a Harvest Festival. Minimum threshold: ten thousand souls to germinate one Demon Lord seed.»

«ok,» Rimuri answered first. «Varion already decided to become a Demon lord. So I'm doing it with him.»

«Affirmative, If both subjects undergo Harvest Festival using a shared soul intake through the existing corridor, projected revival probability increases from 3.14 percent to approximately 6.28 percent.»

Double, the chances out right double if they both became demon lords, that was better then previously if only a little.

That was all either of them needed to be sure that this was worth it. The higher the chance the better. Rimuri drew a breath and spoke to the table.

"We're bringing back the ones that died in the initial attack. To do that, one of us has to become a Demon Lord. We have already decided that we are doing this for both of us. If we both do this together, the odds of getting everyone back go up."

No one at the table asked if she was sure.

Varion spoke "Souei. How many enemies are there and what are their positions?"

"Nearly eighty thousand lord varion," he said. " There are two main camps. Forty thousand from Falmuth. Ten thousand flying Englassia colors. Ten thousand from the Church force that moved with them. Ten thousand from Earl Nidol Migard and finally ten thousand mercenaries." He paused once. "There are 4 barrier crystals holding up holy purification barriers, they are not in those camps. They are held in smaller positions off to the side, guarded by otherworlders."

Varion's eyes flicked once toward Benimaru.

"Those positions are yours," Rimuri said, following the look. "Take the crystals and destroy them all at the same time. We need them down so I can attack unimpeded, I have set up a barrier to keep the souls trapped here in Tempest. Benimaru your in charge of organizing the team and getting things ready"

Benimaru nodded resolutely.

"The two main camps are ours, and we'll deal with them around the same time. Let's move now." Varion said. Standing to his feet and walking out the door

Varion and Rimuri hung over the city suspended in the air.

Tempest looked smaller from up here. The groups were already peeling off toward the four crystal sites to deal with them and the otherworlders that were there guarding them.

As the final group left the city, she turned toward Varion and slipped the mask to the side of her head. She reached out grabbing the front of his shirt and pulled him into a deep kiss which he returned.

"Good luck," she said. "I'll see you when this is done…. And if we change from this

.. at least we'll change together right?."

He rested his forehead against hers. "Yea, and me, you, and Prinz things will go back to how they were. I prom-." he cut himself off violently, flinching. "Love you, see you soon." he said quickly before darting away

Rimuri stayed there and watched him leave with a worried look on her face before hers steeled with resolve and slipped her mask back on heading to the camp she had.

Varion flew until the city noise dropped off and the lively camps noise came into ear shot. Fires. Steel. Too many voices in one place. He stopped short of the light and hung there, looking down.

This was the mixed camp with multiple factions in it. Mercenaries. Englassia colors. Church men. Earl Nidol's border troops.

He could hear them from here.

A large group of mercenaries near the center had bottles going around. One of them was on his feet, bragging and acting out everything he had done with his hands.

"So there I was in the thick of killing off those monsters and spotted three of those wolf-kin, so I did what anyone else would have done and stabbed em and they just started squealing like pigs, so I killed them nasty creatures."

Someone slapped the side of a crate in approval letting out a loud laugh. A church soldier further down the line laughed with them. An Englassia officer didn't even look up from his drink.

Varion's hands clenched so tight they cracked.

The red at the edge of his eyes came back without him even realizing. His magicules pushed against his skin, hot and restless, and for a second the air under his wings went tight.

They were laughing and telling stories about what they did to his people.

Then one caught his attention.

A thin man that was farther forward than the rest, bottle hanging from his fingers, grinning like he had been waiting for a bigger audience.

"Nah, you lot got the small stuff," he said. "I saw these fox brats, little beasts crying over some body. Cute, if you like that kind of thing." He took a drink. "Then I saw her, she was standing over them protecting them from the others, and gods was she the hottest thing I've ever seen."

A few of them leaned in clearly curious.

"White hair. Elf. Built like she was made to get ruined. God, she was gorgeous. huge tits, fat ass, and that face was perfect, with a little beauty mark. The things I would've done to her if I'd had an hour." He groaned thinking about it. "Unfortunately I didn't get an hour. I came up behind her while she was still trying to cover the kids and put my blade in her back. She made this cute little sound—" He imitated it, a high pitched noise and cut off, and the men nearest him barked out a laugh. "Dropped pretty as you please. And she was still warm, so I figured, you know, waste not. Got my hands on her, Tits which were like heaven, between her legs, and her ass was great too. Shame I only had time for a few minutes before the next wave of monsters came at us. Dead or not, that body was a fucking treat, oh what i would have done."

Someone whistled. And a few were slapping him on the shoulder.

Varion stopped completely.

His hands fell open. The heat that had been slamming around in his chest went out like it had just been cut off. He could not feel his fingers. He could not feel the air under his wings. He could not get a second thought to form.

His whole world narrowed down to that one single man.

'He lives, so I can show him helll.'

His eyes went fully over to red. Not the ring. All of it. And the slit in them looked feral

«Acquisition Confirmed. Unique Skill [Avenger] acquired.»

The Voice of the World sounded in his head but he did care what was just said he was too focused.

Aegis deployed instinctively.

Gold-white plates folded out of the air around the mercenary, fast enough that the bottle was still in his hand when the box sealed. No doors. No windows. The sound from inside hit the inner wall and died. The man jerked, the bottle still in his hand before he panicked and started pounding on the barrier trying to escape.

The men around the crate finally looked up.

Two red eyes. Horns throwing off a harsh red glow. Varion hung over them in assault form, having unconsciously slipped into it, and did not come any closer. From up there they were a mess of fires and tents and ants, and those worthless ants dared attack his home.

Stardust gathered over the field.

It started as a few points of light, then dozens, then so many that the night above the camp looked wrong. Tiny stars, sharp and clean, multiplying until there was no dark left between them. Men pointed. Shields came up. A church mage started a barrier, someone screamed to run. But no one was going anywhere.

«Avoid the containment,» Varion thought.

«Acknowledged.»

Then Varion let them fall.

They fell like rain, needles went through plate, through holy wards, through the cheap magic the mercenaries trusted. Stardust did not care what they put in the way. A man mid-laugh took one through the mouth and dropped across the crate. The officer who had not looked up from his drink never got the chance. Needles riddled the ground everywhere. Bodies hit the dirt in mass.

The rain stopped.

The gold-white box sat untouched in the middle of it. Inside, the thin man still had the bottle in his hand. He watched his own people fall in mass and stared horrified with his legs shaking.

About three quarters of them were dead, the rest were just wounded. They were on the ground holding holes in their sides, crawling, trying to stand on legs that would not take them. Armor had not saved them. Magic had not saved them. They were just the ones the first wave had not finished.

Varion looked at what was left. Not worth another pass.

instead he used his new skill [Avenger].

[Unique Skill [Avenger]]

(Marks anyone the user judges to have wronged him. If the target is weaker, the skill takes their life directly, can't be blocked, dodged or parried. Does not apply to anyone sealed or excluded.)

There was no light this time. No grand display, the wounded just suddenly jerked like something inside them had been grabbed, and then blood started pouring from their eyes and ears as they collapsed. Hearts exploded. They fell on top of the ones the needles had already killed.

Varion stayed in the air and watched with a cold look on his face, until the last of them stopped twitching.
