Silence stretched behind the door.
"Come in."
A creak, and the heavy stone door swung inward.
Margaery didn't hesitate. Barefoot, she stepped into the bedchamber of the King-Beyond-the-Wall.
It was warmer than she'd expected.
Flames roared in the massive fireplace, flooding the room with amber light. Lynn stood before it in nothing but a simple pair of black trousers, his back to her.
The firelight carved out his body in sharp relief , muscle stacked on muscle, the kind of physique you'd find on an ancient Greek statue, coiled with explosive power.
He didn't turn around. He just watched the fire, utterly indifferent to her presence.
Margaery's heart skipped.
She crossed the room slowly, until she stood just behind him. The air was thick with the scorched sweetness of burning pine and something else , something that was just him.
"My lord."
Her voice came out soft. Tender as dew.
Lynn turned.
His gaze moved over her , unhurried, thorough. That black silk nightgown caught the firelight in ways that left nothing to the imagination, the fabric tracing every curve of her body with shameless precision.
She could feel his eyes like heat. Like two flames pressed against thin gauze.
"Is this your bargaining chip?"
No warmth in his voice. No edge, either. Nothing.
"Only part of it."
Color rose in her cheeks , a pretty, calculated blush. She took one step forward, close enough to feel the warmth radiating off his skin.
She tilted her head back. Her brown eyes gleamed in the firelight.
"My body. My loyalty." A breath of a pause. "All you have to do is say yes."
"Is that so?"
He reached out and drew his fingertips slowly along her cheek.
Cold. His touch was cold.
She shivered before she could stop herself.
"The Baratheons also want to marry me. They've offered to make me their queen."
Her breathing quickened. She took his hand and pressed it to the small embroidered rose on her gown.
"But they can't give me what I want. What they want is a broodmare — someone to produce heirs and then be forgotten." Her other hand rose, bold and deliberate, and pressed flat against his chest. Her fingertips traced the lines of his muscles. "I want to stand beside a true king. A man who can work miracles. A man who can decide the fate of Westeros."
She dropped her voice.
"My lord, I know you may be concerned. If I were to conceive your child, it would create... complications." A pause, measured and precise. "But my brother Loras once told me something." She leaned in close, her lips near his ear, her breath warm against his skin. "You don't have to visit the most obvious garden to find beautiful scenery. There are hidden paths — just as lovely, just as rewarding." A beat. "And they never bear fruit."
Her voice softened further, threading in a note of shy daring that she'd spent years perfecting.
"That way, you have your pleasure — and when you take me as your wife, I can still offer you the most precious gift a bride can give."
She stepped back half a pace. Her expression balanced perfectly on the edge between nervousness and invitation.
She had played her hand. Every card on the table, face-up.
She believed , she knew , that no man could refuse this. All the pleasure, none of the consequences. And she kept the one thing that protected her future.
A perfect arrangement.
"Interesting."
Lynn looked at her and smiled.
He saw right through her.
This woman, down to the very last move, was still working the angles. She wanted his bed and a way out at the same time.
Clever.
A pity.
"You're right."
He swept her up in his arms and carried her toward the broad bed with its thick layers of bear pelt.
Margaery gasped, arms flying around his neck on instinct.
She'd done it.
A wave of triumph surged through her, bright and intoxicating. She felt like the finest animal tamer in the world, on the verge of breaking the most dangerous beast in the North.
Lynn set her down gently on the soft pelts.
Margaery turned her back to him and arranged herself , a pose she had practiced a hundred times in private, until it was effortless, until every line of her body said exactly what she needed it to say. The black silk pulled taut across her curves.
She felt the mattress dip as his weight settled behind her.
She closed her eyes. Her body hummed with anticipation.
She had spent months preparing for a negotiation like this, running through every possible scenario with her grandmother. Their conclusion had always been the same: men , even god-like men , were simple creatures when desire was involved. Follow the current of what they want, give them a taste, apply just the right pressure, and they'll walk into any trap you've laid.
The King-Beyond-the-Wall was no different.
The corner of her mouth curved upward.
Then a hand closed around her ankle.
Hard.
The grip was iron. She flinched before she could stop herself.
"My lord?"
Her body went rigid. Something cold moved through her chest.
Lynn didn't answer.
He pulled.
She gasped and spun , and met his eyes.
Those eyes she'd thought were burning with desire.
They were full of amusement.
"You..."
The confidence drained out of her face.
She understood then, with horrible clarity, that she had made a fatal mistake.
The man in front of her was not a beast drunk on desire.
He was something else entirely. Something that didn't follow rules at all.
"You thought you could play me with that?" Lynn's voice was quiet. That was what made it terrifying. "With that little bit of cleverness?"
He leaned down and took hold of her chin.
"No , I wasn't , I didn't —"
Panic cracked her voice open. She needed to explain, to fix this, to ,
His grip tightened just enough.
The rest of the words died in her throat.
"Didn't you want me to have my enjoyment?" His eyes stayed on hers. "Then it's not up to you anymore."
RIP!
The sharp, clean sound of silk tearing.
That nightgown , the one she had chosen so carefully, her finest weapon , was torn apart.
...
The next morning.
In the council hall of Dragon's Hold.
Miranda stood in the corner shadows, quietly wiping down her weirwood longbow.
She'd kept vigil outside Lynn's chamber the entire night.
She hadn't caught every word. But those sounds , breaking through the walls in fragments, tracking from arrogance to humiliation to something that had simply come apart , had told her everything she needed to know.
The woman from Highgarden. That self-important rose. She'd lit the master's temper with the most idiotic play imaginable.
And she'd gotten exactly what that deserved.
Miranda looked up at the throne.
Lynn was in good spirits this morning. He sat with his eyes closed, fingers tapping a slow, irregular rhythm on the armrest, humming something that barely qualified as a melody.
It was a peaceful sound. Gradually, it pulled the restless jealousy out of Miranda's chest and let it settle.
Then the hall doors opened.
Two Winter Wraith guards escorted Margaery Tyrell inside.
Miranda's attention went to her immediately.
She'd changed into a conservative gray dress that covered her from throat to floor. Her beautiful face had shed every trace of yesterday's composure , what remained was exhaustion and pallor that no amount of effort could fully conceal. She'd applied heavy cosmetics, but the bruised shadows beneath her eyes still showed through.
What caught Miranda's eye most, though, was the way she walked.
Small steps. Careful steps.
Her weight placed almost entirely on the balls of her feet.
"Lady Tyrell." Lynn opened his eyes. His voice carried a thread of private amusement. "You don't look like you slept well."
Something crossed Margaery's face.
She lifted her gaze to the man on the throne. Those brown eyes held emotions she hadn't bothered to catalogue yet , too many, too tangled.
She hadn't expected him to change the terms. Not like that.
Every clever plan she'd constructed had been ground to nothing last night, in the most direct and thorough way possible. She understood now, finally, what she'd been dealing with.
Not a beast.
A dragon.
And she had been the foolish lamb who thought she could play with dragonfire.
She'd managed to play herself straight into the flames.
"I..." She straightened. "I slept very well."
Lynn rose from the throne and descended the steps.
Each step closer, her body grew a fraction stiffer.
He stopped in front of her.
He didn't touch her. He simply looked down.
Margaery's lips moved. Then, slowly, painfully, she bent her knees and attempted a curtsy.
The color drained from her face in an instant. Cold sweat broke across her forehead. Her body swayed , she nearly went down entirely.
"You haven't adjusted yet," Lynn said.
He reached out and steadied her, drawing her back upright.
"You'll need to practice." A beat. "I don't like my woman on her knees."
The word landed in Margaery's skull like a struck bell.
His woman.
Yes. That was what she'd become.
There was nothing left to say about it now.
"What do you want from me, my lord?"
She'd stopped fighting. Her voice had a quiet note of resignation in it.
"Simple."
Lynn released her and walked back to the throne.
"I want House Tyrell to be my sharpest sword and my strongest shield. I want Highgarden's granaries open to my armies and to the North. I want your fleets moving soldiers when I need them moved." He settled into the throne. "I want your wealth. Your knights. Everything."
He paused and looked at her , this woman who was still barely holding herself upright.
"In return: when my dragon banners fly over every inch of Westeros, Highgarden's golden rose will still bloom in the sun."
"And you."
His gaze rested on her pale face.
"If you prove useful to me, you'll get what you came here wanting. You'll stand at the top — looking down at every person you ever had to look up to."
Margaery's head snapped up.
He couldn't be saying ,
After last night , after all of it , he was still willing to make her queen?
"Why?" The word came out before she could stop it.
Lynn smiled.
"Don't celebrate yet. You'll have to earn it." He let that settle for a moment. "Arya. Myrcella. Daenerys. They all have equal claim to stand beside me. You are not irreplaceable. I'm placing you on the same starting line as them , nothing more, nothing less. What you do from here is entirely up to you."
He leaned back, watching her with easy patience.
"Margaery. Understand this, and don't forget it. The woman who earns a place at my side is the one who reads the moment clearly, knows when to yield, and is clever enough to make me stronger for it. Of course, this is just a promise right now. Whether it becomes real depends on what House Tyrell does from this point forward." A pause. "And on what you do."
Margaery's heart hammered.
The humiliation from last night , the wreckage of everything she'd planned , all of it was being pushed aside by something larger.
Ambition.
The same ambition he had crushed with his own hands. Now, with those same hands, he'd lit it back up.
She understood what he was asking for.
"I understand."
She lowered her head, hiding the fire that had come back to life behind her eyes.
"I'll show you my sincerity."
She raised her face again. A faint smile found its way back to her lips.
But it was different from yesterday's smile. The ease was gone. The certainty was gone. In their place: a thin edge of bitterness.
What do I do now?
