David hesitated. "We negotiate. We offer something she wants more than prosecuting you. Information. Testimony. Something that helps her look good without requiring her to go after trafficking victims' rescuers."
"What could we possibly offer that's more valuable than putting former mob bosses back in prison?" Alessandro asked.
"Information about other trafficking networks," I said slowly. "Jane had connections. Knew about other operations. If we could get her to share that if we could give Zhao leads on active trafficking rings"
"She might consider that a better use of resources than prosecuting you," David finished.
"Can you get Jane to cooperate?" Connor asked.
"I can try. But it's been two years. She might have disappeared. Might not want to resurface."
"Then we find her," Rosa said. "We have forty-eight hours. We use them."
Finding Jane proved harder than expected.
Her phone number was disconnected. The address we had for her was abandoned. Every lead went cold.
