We were going to die here. In a delivery area behind a mansion in the Hamptons. Trying to save girls from the same fate I'd been sold into.
The irony wasn't lost on me.
"I'm sorry," I said to the girls huddled behind the dumpster. "I'm so sorry. We tried."
Ava looked at me with eyes far too old for her fifteen years. "You came for us. No one's ever come for us before. That matters."
It did matter. But it wouldn't save us.
Then I heard it. The most beautiful sound in the world.
Sirens.
Lots of them.
Getting closer.
Webb heard them too. "What how did"
"Because I'm not as stupid as you think!" I shouted. "You think we came here without backup? Without a contingency plan?"
It was a complete lie. We hadn't called anyone. The FBI contact was supposed to be called after we got the girls out.
But Webb didn't know that.
The sirens were getting louder. Multiple vehicles. Coming fast.
"Fall back!" Webb ordered his men. "Fall back now!"
