Chapter 252 - Chapter 252 — The Man Who Taught Him to Live

The river was still.

Tyouro sat beside Shougo, staring at the water.

His eyes were empty.

The children nearby were laughing and playing, but their voices felt distant.

Tyouro couldn't understand how they could laugh.

How could the world continue like nothing had happened?

A girl was gone.

His friend was gone.

And somehow, the stars were still shining.

The river was still flowing.

People were still walking home.

The world hadn't stopped.

Tyouro lowered his head.

"Why?"

Shougo glanced at him.

"Why what?"

"Why does everything keep going?"

Shougo remained quiet.

Tyouro clenched his fists.

"She died..."

His voice trembled.

"But look."

He pointed toward the town.

"Everyone is still laughing."

Shougo looked at the people.

Then he looked back at Tyouro.

"Because the world doesn't know how to stop for our pain."

Tyouro looked at him.

Shougo continued calmly.

"And perhaps that's one of the cruelest truths about life."

Tyouro remained silent.

"Something terrible can happen to you," Shougo said, "and yet the sun will rise the next morning."

He looked toward the horizon.

"Not because your pain doesn't matter."

"But because life has never promised to pause when we're suffering."

Tyouro's eyes slowly widened.

"Then... what's the point?"

Shougo looked at him.

"The point?"

Tyouro nodded.

"If the world doesn't care... why should I?"

Shougo didn't answer immediately.

He picked up a small stone and threw it into the river.

Plop.

The ripples slowly spread across the surface.

"Do you see those ripples?"

Tyouro nodded.

"One small stone disturbed the entire surface."

Shougo paused.

"People are like that."

Tyouro listened carefully.

"We enter someone's life for a moment."

"We say something."

"We help them."

"We hurt them."

"We make them laugh."

"And sometimes, without realizing it, we change the direction of their entire life."

Tyouro looked at the river.

Shougo continued.

"Your friend changed you."

Tyouro's expression darkened.

"She taught you happiness."

"She taught you friendship."

"She gave you memories."

"And now you're carrying the pain of losing her."

Tyouro looked down.

"But I failed her."

Shougo's eyes became slightly sharper.

"No."

Tyouro looked at him.

"You were afraid."

"That doesn't make me a coward?"

"No."

Shougo shook his head.

"Fear is not proof that you're weak."

"Fear is proof that you understand there is something to lose."

Tyouro stared at him.

Shougo continued.

"The bravest people aren't those who never feel fear."

"They're the people who feel it... and still decide what they will do with it."

Tyouro's hands trembled.

"But what could I have done?"

Shougo looked directly into his eyes.

"Perhaps nothing."

Tyouro froze.

Shougo didn't soften his words.

"You were a child."

"You couldn't control the situation."

"You couldn't control those people."

"And you couldn't control what happened afterward."

Tyouro's eyes began watering again.

"Then why do I feel guilty?"

"Because you survived."

Silence.

Shougo's voice remained calm.

"Sometimes, when something terrible happens, the person who survives starts searching for a reason."

"They tell themselves, I should have done this."

"I should have been stronger."

"I should have been faster."

"I should have saved them."

He paused.

"But guilt gives us an illusion."

Tyouro looked at him.

"It makes us believe that if everything was our fault... then perhaps we could have controlled it."

Tyouro's breathing slowed.

Shougo continued.

"But you cannot change yesterday by punishing yourself today."

The words struck Tyouro harder than anything else.

Shougo stood up.

"Come."

Tyouro looked at him.

"Where?"

"Home."

"I don't have anywhere to go."

Shougo looked back at him.

"Then come with me."

Tyouro hesitated.

"Why?"

Shougo smiled faintly.

"Because sometimes people don't need someone to save them."

"They just need someone who refuses to leave."

Tyouro stared at him.

Then he slowly stood.

---

Several Weeks Later

Tyouro began spending more time with Shougo.

At first, he barely spoke.

Shougo never forced him.

Sometimes they trained.

Sometimes they walked through town.

Sometimes they simply sat somewhere quietly.

Shougo taught him how to defend himself.

But more importantly...

He taught him how to understand himself.

One afternoon, Tyouro sat on the ground after training.

"Shougo?"

"Yes?"

"Why are you helping me?"

Shougo looked at him.

"Because someone helped me once."

Tyouro blinked.

"Who?"

Shougo smiled.

"That's a story for another day."

Tyouro frowned.

"You always say that."

"And you always ask questions."

"Because you're mysterious!"

Shougo laughed quietly.

For the first time in weeks...

Tyouro smiled.

It wasn't the same smile he had before.

It was smaller.

Fragile.

But real.

Shougo noticed it.

He didn't say anything.

He simply smiled.

---

Years Later

The boy who once believed his fear made him worthless had changed.

He still joked.

He still acted ridiculous.

He still made funny faces.

He still annoyed everyone around him.

But underneath that laughter was something different.

Understanding.

Tyouro finally realized something Shougo had been trying to teach him.

Being strong didn't mean being fearless.

Being strong meant accepting that fear existed...

And refusing to let it decide who you became.

He couldn't save everyone.

Nobody could.

But that didn't mean he should stop trying.

And whenever someone he loved was in danger...

He would stand.

Even while shaking.

Even while afraid.

Because Shougo had given him something more valuable than strength.

He had given him a reason to keep moving forward.

---

Present Day

Tyouro was still crying in Kairo's arms.

Kimimaru stood nearby.

Griffin watched silently.

Tyouro wiped his eyes.

He looked toward Kimimaru.

"I..."

His voice trembled.

"I don't want to lose another friend."

Kimimaru's expression softened.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Tyouro took a deep breath.

"I was scared."

He looked at Kairo.

"But this time..."

He clenched his fist.

"I don't want my fear to decide what happens next."

Kairo smiled.

"That's the Tyouro I know."

Tyouro laughed through his tears.

"Shut up... you're gonna make me cry again."

Kairo laughed.

And somewhere inside Tyouro's memories...

He could hear Shougo's voice.

You cannot change yesterday by punishing yourself today.

Tyouro looked toward the sky.

"Thank you, Sensei."

The boy who once lost himself beside a river...

Had finally found his way back.

And the person who showed him the path...

Was Shougo Takahano.

The man who never tried to erase Tyouro's pain.

He simply taught him how to live with it.
