Chapter 374 - Chapter 374 - The Odds and the Pawn

Location: The Crucible Grounds - Arena Floor

Time: Present Day - Tournament Quarterfinals

The arena buzzed with the aftershock of the previous matches, the crowd's energy still crackling with excitement. Kazimir Zelenko materialized on the massive screen, his digital form moving with exaggerated, Gen-Alpha energy—his body swaying, his hands gesturing in rapid, expressive motions.

"YOOOOO, FOLKS!" Kazimir shouted, his voice layered with electronic distortion. "Can we just take a moment to appreciate what we just witnessed?! These participants did NOT disappoint! I am SO entertained right now!"

He mimicked Niko Jovanović's defensive stance, his body dropping low, his arms raised in a parody of the fighter's signature pose. His hands moved in exaggerated motions, mimicking the act of putting someone in a lock.

"And then there was THAT moment!" Kazimir continued, his body contorting in a dramatic reenactment of someone being hit below the belt. His face twisted into a comical expression of pain, his hands clutching his midsection.

The crowd erupted in laughter, their voices rising with amusement.

"HAHAHA! Did you see that?!"

"Kazimir is on fire today!"

"That was hilarious!"

The music that began to play was a light, upbeat melody—a tune that seemed to capture the playful energy of the moment.

"The sun goes down, the stars come out,

But we keep moving, there's no doubt,

Round and round, we spin and sway,

We're living for another day..."

---

Kazimir's voice carried a note of excitement. "ALRIGHT, FOLKS! The new round has been scheduled! Let's take a look at the odds!"

The screen flickered, displaying the faces of the competitors in a cascading grid. Beside each name, a set of numbers appeared—odds that shifted and pulsed with the rhythm of the betting pool.

Leo Jerkins stood at 6.70 odds—a clear underdog against Niko Jovanović, whose 2.90 odds painted him as the heavy favorite.

Evan Torrent's 6.60 odds placed him as the slight favorite against Grace Barlow's 5.60—a closer matchup that reflected the uncertainty of Grace's recent victory.

And then there was Caspian Jerkins. His 8.90 odds were almost insulting, while Brenna's Sister stood confidently at 2.10—a clear signal that the bookies believed she would dominate.

The crowd's reaction was immediate—a mixture of gasps, murmurs, and speculative whispers.

"Look at those odds! The Jerkins brothers are the underdogs!"

"Can you believe it? Leo is at 6.70! That's insane!"

"Grace Barlow at 5.60? She just beat a Frostlander, and she's still the underdog?"

"I guess the bookies think Evan Torrent has the edge. But after what Grace did to Michael, I'm not so sure."

The geeky kid with glasses leaned forward, his voice carrying a note of analysis. "It's all about the numbers. The bookies aren't betting on past performance—they're betting on the fighters' fundamentals. Leo and Caspian haven't shown the same level of raw power as their opponents."

Another spectator shook his head. "Odds don't mean anything. Look what happened to Michael Snovidenie. He was the favorite, and he got destroyed."

A third spectator nodded in agreement. "Grace Barlow is proof that the underdog can win. Maybe the Jerkins brothers have something to prove."

---

Caspian Jerkins stared at the screen, his hand moving to his neck. He rubbed the back of his head nervously, his expression one of barely concealed anxiety.

"Bro," Leo said, his voice carrying a note of amusement. "Don't tell me you're scared."

Caspian's voice was defensive, his words tumbling out in a rush. "I'm not scared! I'm just—I'm not sure I can do this again. That last match was brutal. And now I'm facing her?" He gestured toward Brenna's Sister, who was standing at the edge of the arena with cold confidence. "She's a monster. A literal monster."

Leo's smile widened. "Relax. You'll be fine."

Caspian's expression shifted to one of vulnerable hope. "When all this Crucible Grounds showdown nonsense is over, when we're back at Jerkin base, will you be there for me?"

Leo raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"

Caspian's voice was quiet, almost pleading. "I mean... will you stand with me? Will you have my back?"

Leo's lips curved into a slow smile. His eyes gleamed with something between amusement and calculation.

Sheesh, he thought, his internal voice carrying a note of dark amusement. This guy is a real deadbeat loser. More than that other Leo kid ever was. But maybe I can use that.

He clapped Caspian on the shoulder, his voice carrying a note of theatrical confidence. "Screw standing with you. I'm turning you into something better. A piece that moves on its own. One that turns the game on its head."

He paused, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "In the old London streets, they had a saying: 'The fool who stands his ground becomes the wall. The wise man who learns to fall becomes the river.' You, my friend, are going to become the river."

Caspian's expression shifted from doubt to cautious hope. "Bro, you sure have the imagination. Maybe that's what I need right now."

Leo's brow furrowed. "And what's that?"

Caspian's voice was soft, almost vulnerable. "Just being in the moment. Not feeling like the whole world is against me. The way our father moulded us—was it wrong?"

As he spoke, something shifted. A warm, golden light flickered around him—barely visible, like the first light of dawn breaking through the clouds. It drifted toward Leo, entering his chest through the spaces between his ribs.

Leo felt it—a surge of energy that seemed to resonate with something deep within him. His expression shifted from amusement to quiet thoughtfulness.

What was that? he thought. That feeling... like a free spirit reaching out.

Dhivya Rana let out a dramatic sigh, her voice carrying a note of bored impatience. "Man, when will these Crucible matchups end? And whose idea was it to start this in the first place?"

Nikolai Morozov glanced at Brenna, his voice carrying a note of dry amusement. "Apparently, someone's know-it-all elder sister. That's who."

Brenna ignored him, her gaze fixed on the arena.

Jericho Jerkin leaned back, his voice carrying a note of self-satisfaction. "Well, at least the bright side of all this is that my family's base has plenty of prospects."

Brenna's voice cut through the air, sharp and dismissive. "It won't change the fact that you're still ranked the lowest in the operative field."

Jericho's jaw tightened. "Keep putting all that air out while you're in that same shitty base you keep downgrading."

Brenna's voice was flat, unbothered. "I'm just there with my siblings to stick around. Its shittiness isn't something of ours to cure."

A dramatic exhale escaped Jericho's lips, his voice carrying a theatrical, "WOO! GOT ME THERE!"

---

Eugene Torrent's gaze was distant, his voice low and thoughtful. "I heard from a birdy that a very dangerous criminal is apparently within the midst of this proximity. Who this person is isn't known yet. But soon, that fellow won't hide for long."

He let out a soft hmph, his eyes narrowing.

"Trust me on that."

---

The music continued to play, its melody a soft, haunting backdrop to the scene.

"Round and round, we spin and sway,

We're living for another day..."

Leo stood at the edge of the arena, his gaze fixed on the horizon. Caspian stood beside him, his expression one of quiet determination.

Somewhere in the VIP section, Eugene Torrent's eyes scanned the crowd, searching for a face he couldn't quite identify.
