Chapter 348 - Chapter 348 - The Resonance of Bones

Location: Off-Grid Neighborhood - Fenwick district - time at night

Lucian stood motionless, his eyes fixed on the bone club lying on the ground. The weapon pulsed with a faint, rhythmic light—a heartbeat of ancient power that seemed to call out to something deep within him.

Curious, he thought, his analytical mind already dissecting the sensation. There's something about this weapon... something that resonates with what lies dormant inside me.

He felt it—a subtle hum beneath his skin, like a second heartbeat that had been sleeping for years. It stirred in response to the bone club's presence, a quiet acknowledgment that seemed to say, Yes, I recognize this. I've been waiting.

Lucian's fingers traced the seven rings on his arm. They had served him well over the years—instruments of power that had allowed him to channel destructive forces when needed. But they were limited. He had always known they were just tools, not extensions of himself. The power they granted was borrowed, fleeting, never truly his.

These rings, he thought, his internal voice carrying a note of quiet frustration. They are like a key that only opens the first door. The power within me... the power I can sense but never touch... it remains locked away, slumbering.

He glanced at the bone club again. Its surface was etched with ancient markings that seemed to shift and writhe in the dim light. The weapon pulsed with a power that felt familiar—a chaotic, thunderous energy that mirrored something deep within his own being.

But this, he thought, his lips curving into a faint smile. This could be the key to unlocking what lies dormant. With this, the gap between me and that Marcus fiend could be lessened. Perhaps even closed entirely.

He felt the weapon's energy calling to him—a warm, inviting presence that promised power and freedom. It was like a long-lost friend extending a hand in greeting.

---

Tyla stepped forward, her voice carrying a note of concern. She was munching on something—a piece of dried meat she'd found in one of the crates—her expression thoughtful.

"If what this guy is spouting is true," she said, gesturing at Roman, "then it's unimaginable. The type of strength and hidden cards the Mysterium clan and its allied forces have... we don't even know the half of it. If an ordinary military compound in a tiny corner of Crestwood—in the Fenwick district, no less—holds all these powerful weapons that they treat like toys..."

She shook her head, her voice dropping to a whisper.

"They don't put them as top priority. Probably even most of the ones who hold them aren't aware of what they truly are. They're kept in the dark. It seems they only prioritize those suits—the ones that enhance a person's natural abilities, those glowing frames that make them faster, stronger."

She paused, her expression shifting to one of troubled curiosity.

"You and I both know just what those things really hide within them. The power they contain... it's not just about the suits. It's about what's inside the person wearing them. The potential that's waiting to be unlocked."

Lucian's gaze remained fixed on the bone club. His fingers moved to the rings on his arm, his movements deliberate and unhurried.

Perhaps it's time for a change, he thought.

He removed the rings, one by one, and tossed them to Tyla. She caught them, her hands fumbling with the unexpected weight. Her eyes widened, her expression one of surprise.

"Lucian—" she started.

He didn't respond. His attention was elsewhere.

---

Roman's eyes locked onto the rings in Tyla's hands. His face drained of color, his breath catching in his throat.

"Those rings," he whispered, his voice trembling. "How is this possible? Those markings... the way they pulse... it's the same as the weapon. The same energy."

Mikhail's brow furrowed. "What is it now, old—"

He stopped. Roman's gaze was fixed on Lucian, his expression one of pure terror.

Lucian was walking toward the bone club. His steps were measured, deliberate—the movements of a man who had finally found his path and was determined to follow it.

---

The crew's reactions were immediate and varied.

"What is he doing?" Sergei exclaimed, his voice carrying a note of disbelief. "Does he want to die or something? Did he not see what happened to Ba?"

"Look at him," Viktor added, his voice laced with unease. "He's walking like he owns the place. Like he has no fear at all."

Mikhail shook his head slowly. "He's either incredibly brave or incredibly stupid. I haven't decided which."

Hector crossed himself again, muttering a prayer. "Ay, Dios mío. This is not going to end well."

Carlos stared at Lucian, his expression one of morbid fascination. "He's really going to do it. He's actually going to touch it."

Mariela's hand rested on her weapon, her body tense. "If he gets thrown like Ba did, we'll have to carry him too."

Alma's lips pressed into a thin line. "He wouldn't be doing this if he didn't think it would work."

Veleria shook her head, her voice carrying a note of disbelief. "He's either insane or he knows something we don't."

Lucia's gaze was fixed on Lucian, her expression unreadable. "Or both," she said, her voice quiet. "Probably both."

Ba, who had been nursing his wounds, stared at Lucian with a mixture of awe and terror. "If he's a subordinate to that Diego De la Torre," he said, his voice carrying a note of dark amusement, "then you and I both know he might be another freak. The kind that does things normal people can't."

He let out a weak laugh, his body still trembling from his earlier encounter.

---

Lucian reached the bone club. He stood over it, his gaze fixed on its surface.

His eyes held a look of quiet desire—a hunger that had been sleeping for years, finally awakening.

He reached down and touched it.

The effect was immediate.

A wave of warm, golden light erupted from the weapon, washing over Lucian like a gentle tide. It spread outward in concentric rings, covering everyone within proximity. The sensation was not painful—it was inviting, warm, like stepping into sunlight after years in darkness.

The crew felt it. A sense of peace washed over them, of safety and protection. Their fears seemed to melt away, replaced by a quiet confidence.

Roman's eyes widened. He stumbled backward, his hands raised as if to ward off an attack. His voice was barely a whisper, cracked with terror.

"Impossible," he breathed. "It can't be. Just who are you? That's a weapon meant for a Kostyanaya—an instrument of the ancient devourers!"

He pointed at Lucian, his hands trembling.

"The creature that dwells in the realm of shadow and bone—the one that feeds on the living and seeks to claim all souls as its own!"

Mikhail's voice quivered, barely a whisper. "What... what did he just say? What is this creature he's speaking of?"

---

The area around Lucian seemed to shimmer. The warm light continued to pulse outward, wrapping around the crew like a protective blanket. Hector felt a calm settle over him that he hadn't felt in years. Mariela's hand relaxed on her weapon. Ba's trembling stopped.

Lucian stood in the center of it all, his body bathed in the warm glow. His eyes were closed, his expression one of quiet contentment.

He felt the power flowing through him, gentle and patient. It was like a partner, a friend, a guide—not a master, not a conqueror.

---

Andreas's voice cut through the silence, sharp and frantic. "I knew it!" he screamed, his voice carrying a note of crazed madness. "They are among us! They walk among us, seeking our blood and our souls!"

His movements were jerky, panicked. He pointed at the crew, his eyes wild.

"Those things within us! They're slowly eating away at us! We'll turn into their mindless puppets! We'll become hollow shells, dancing to their tune!"

He began to run, his arms flailing, his voice rising to a shriek.

"We're all doomed! Doomed, I tell you!"

Tyla moved with practiced efficiency. Her hand shot out, connecting with the back of Andreas's head. He crumpled to the ground, unconscious before he hit the dirt.

She shook her head, her expression one of weary exasperation.

"At this rate, by the time Elijah comes back," she said, her voice carrying a note of comedic worry, "everyone here will die of induced shock. And I'll have to explain why we lost half the crew to a collective heart attack."

She glanced at the unconscious Andreas, her lips curving into a wry smile.

"Honestly. Some people just can't handle a little mystery."

---

The warm light continued to pulse around Lucian, gentle and inviting. The bone club in his hands glowed with a soft radiance, its surface seeming to shift and flow like liquid amber.

Lucian's eyes opened. They were no longer the eyes of the man who had arrived—they held a quiet confidence, a sense of purpose that had been sleeping for years.

He looked at the bone club, his lips curving into a faint smile.

Yes, he thought. This is what I've been waiting for.

The night grew still, the warm light settling around them like a protective embrace.

And everyone knew that something had changed—something that would reshape the game entirely.
