Chapter 345 - Chapter 345 - The Weight of Truth

Grace stared at her hands, her breath catching in her throat. Golden light pulsed from her palms, warm and radiant, flowing like liquid sunlight through her fingers. She turned them over, watching the light dance across her skin, feeling the warmth spread through her entire body. The glow seemed to pulse with her heartbeat, each throb sending gentle waves of energy through her veins.

The pain that had plagued her for so long—the constant pressure in her chest, the weight on her shoulders, the endless fatigue that had drained her spirit—was gone. She felt light, free, as though an invisible boulder that had pressed down on her for years had finally been lifted, crumbling into dust. Her breath came easier, her muscles relaxed, and for the first time in what felt like forever, she felt truly awake. The world around her seemed brighter, more vivid, as if she had been seeing everything through a fog that had finally lifted.

Around her, the world seemed to respond. The grass beneath her feet glowed faintly, small flowers blooming where her shadow fell. The air hummed with a gentle resonance, and her Aethernova suit pulsed with a warm, golden light—a stark contrast to the cold, dim glow it had once emitted. The light seemed to breathe with her, expanding and contracting in rhythm with her lungs.

She looked up at Elijah, her eyes wide with confusion and awe.

"What did you do to me?" she asked, her voice carrying a note of wonder. "I feel... different. Like I can breathe for the first time. Like I've been drowning my whole life and I've finally broken the surface."

Before Elijah could respond, Grace moved. Her body reacted before her mind could process, her fists swinging toward his face with a speed she had never possessed before. He stumbled backward, her first blow connecting with his cheek with a satisfying crack. Her second caught his jaw, snapping his head to the side. Her third found his ribs, the impact sending a shockwave through his body.

"You shameless liar!" she shouted, her voice hoarse with emotion. "You cunning, despicable snake! You messed with my head, my heart, my entire life! All those moments—all those times I opened up to you, trusted you, let myself be vulnerable—it was all a lie!"

She grabbed his collar, yanking him close before driving her knee into his stomach. He doubled over, gasping, but she didn't relent. Her fists continued to rain down on him, each blow fueled by weeks of suppressed frustration, months of confusion, years of longing that had been twisted into something else entirely.

"How dare you!" she screamed, her voice cracking. "How dare you play with my feelings like I was some toy! Did you enjoy it? Watching me fall for you? Watching me open my heart while you wore someone else's face?"

Elijah staggered backward, blood trickling from his split lip, a bruise already forming on his cheekbone. He smiled despite the pain, his expression calm and unnerving. His eyes held a glint of something—amusement, perhaps, or satisfaction.

Wonko's voice echoed in his mind, sharp and urgent. You idiot! Stop fooling around and deal with her before someone sees us! Do you have any idea what would happen if your cover is blown? We'd be hunted, torn apart, and that's assuming they're merciful enough to kill us quickly!

I know what I'm doing, Elijah replied, his mental voice calm.

You're going to get us killed!

Trust me.

Trust you? I've trusted you before, and it always ends with us in more trouble!

Grace grabbed his collar again, her knuckles white with tension. Her fists connected with his face again and again, each impact accompanied by a choked sob. Her voice was raw, broken, but filled with righteous fury.

"Why are you laughing?!" she demanded, her voice cracking with rage. "What's so funny?! Is this all a joke to you?!"

Elijah's smile widened, blood dripping from his lips. His face was a mask of calm, unearthly tranquility that seemed almost inhuman. "Because, my dear," he said, his voice soft and measured, each word deliberate as honey dripping from a spoon. "Though you've discovered who I truly am, you know deep in your heart that it changes nothing. The heart does not care for names or faces. The heart knows only what it wants, and what it wants cannot be undone by truth alone."

Grace's fists hovered in mid-air, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Her eyes searched his face for something—anything—that would make sense of the chaos inside her.

"You're wrong," she said, her voice trembling. "You're wrong. I hate you. I hate you for what you've done to me."

But even as she said the words, she felt the lie in them. The golden light around her pulsed, responding to the turmoil within her soul.

Why? she thought, her internal voice trembling with confusion. Why do I feel this way? I want to beat him, to release all my frustrations, to make him pay for what he's done. I want to see him broken, to watch him suffer the way I've suffered. But at the same time... I want to be in his arms. I want to feel his warmth. I want to believe that somewhere, beneath the lies and the deception, there's something real. He isn't Leo, so why? Why do I still feel this pull toward him? Why does my heart race when he looks at me? Why do I want him to hold me even now?

Her grip on his collar loosened, her body trembling with the weight of her conflicting emotions. The golden light around her flickered, waves of warmth radiating from her in erratic bursts.

"I don't understand," she whispered, her voice breaking. "I don't understand any of this. I should hate you. I do hate you. So why..."

She trailed off, unable to finish the thought.

And then she felt it. A faint presence near her, barely perceptible, like a shadow moving in the corner of her eye. Something small, ethereal, almost invisible—a thread of light that seemed to pulse with a life of its own. The golden light around her flickered, her concentration wavering.

"What—" she started, her voice trailing off. "What is that?"

Before she could react, Elijah moved. His hands caught hers, his grip firm but gentle, and he pulled her into an embrace. Her body pressed against his chest, her arms pinned at her sides. She struggled, her body writhing against his hold, but his grip was unbreakable.

"Let me go!" she demanded, her voice muffled against his chest. "I said let me go! I'll kill you! I swear I'll—"

Elijah's smile was cold, his eyes gleaming with quiet satisfaction. He leaned down, his lips brushing against her ear. His voice was soft, hypnotic, each word carrying the weight of absolute certainty.

"You should be grateful," he whispered. "With me, you will become something greater than you could ever have imagined. I will reshape you, mold you into something more powerful than you ever dreamed possible. The chains that bound you are gone. The prison that held you is broken. And you, my dear Grace, have already taken the first step toward becoming a queen."

Grace's struggle ceased. Her body went still, her breath catching in her throat. Her cheeks flushed, her eyes wide with confusion and something else—something she couldn't name. A warmth spread through her chest that had nothing to do with her newfound power.

"I..." she started, her voice barely a whisper. "I don't..."

Elijah's arms tightened around her. "Your heart is already mine," he murmured. "You can fight it. You can deny it. But you know the truth. You've always known it. And soon, you'll embrace it."

Grace buried her face in his chest, her fists unclenching. Her body relaxed against his, her breath evening out into a steady rhythm. The golden light around her pulsed with a gentle, steady rhythm, warm and soft like a heartbeat.

The night was silent, the stars above watching over them like ancient witnesses. The air hummed with a quiet resonance, the grass beneath them glowing faintly with residual warmth.

Elijah's expression remained unreadable, his gaze fixed on the horizon.

The game was far from over.

And Grace was no longer just a pawn.
