Chapter 52 - Chapter 52: A Greed

With the death of the king, the human kingdom, Luxilion, is on the verge of collapse.

The first prince had died, and the second prince had killed the king and his brother, there was no heir who could take the throne within that time.

Then, will the throne just be left empty?

Of course not.

Upon hearing of the death of the king and first prince, the king's cousins who still had royal lineages, and the children of the king's concubines competed to fight for the throne.

Will the Luxilion kingdom get a better king?

Everyone hopes so. So did Lucian.

However, reality sometimes turns around from what is expected.

Not learning from the mistakes of previous kings, greed filled those who wanted the throne.

The desire for power and wealth makes them do all kinds of things to gain the throne.

There is no virtue in it at all.

Lucian, who was sick of seeing all this, drew his sword again.

He slaughtered everyone who wanted the throne.

"It's useless... everything is useless..." Lucian muttered.

"Eliminating one will only make another one grow..."

The black aura surrounding him grew even denser.

"There's only one thing..." Lucian gripped his sword tightly.

"Eliminate them all without a trace."

A black mist had clouded his mind.

Initially, he had eliminated all the nobles. That should have been enough to impress upon many people the fear of the consequences of committing the same depravity as those nobles.

However, rage and darkness had blinded Lucian. His mind could no longer think clearly.

There was only anger, hatred, and a thirst for justice.

In his eyes, everyone was the same. They would all eventually show their corrupt side.

He began by eliminating the wealthy.

Then the common people.

And finally, he slaughtered the homeless.

In just three days, the entire kingdom of Luxilion had been destroyed, at the hands of the fallen human hero.

Was it only in human kingdoms filled with corrupt people that heroes were corrupted by evil thoughts? Of course not.

Even in kingdoms of elves, beastmen, dwarves, vampires, and the demon race, it was the same.

In the elven kingdom of Elarion, kings are not chosen by heredity, instead, they are chosen by a giant tree whose height reaches the heavens and whose roots penetrate deep into the earth.

They believe this tree is the embodiment of their god, the elves call it the 'World Tree.'

Even a commoner can become king.

Could a commoner be accepted by society to become king just because the world tree chose him?

Of course not everyone could immediately accept it, especially the nobles who managed the kingdom.

But there was one thing that made them have to accept it.

The world tree's prophecy was never wrong.

The world tree didn't just choose people randomly.

The tree could see a person's past, future, and soul.

And it was proven, for generations, the kings who led always had wise thoughts.

So, what problems could the elven kingdom have if they had a wise king?

Even if the king was wise, it didn't mean the government would run smoothly. The king couldn't rule everything alone.

So, what would happen if his subordinates didn't work properly and even betrayed him?

Just because a king was chosen based on the world tree's prophecy, didn't mean all the nobles there were also chosen people.

The elven kingdom's nobility was the same as the human kingdom's nobility. Their descendants would inherit their family name.

So what was the problem?

Every living creature with intelligence had one thing in common, Greed.

No creature was without desires. Every one of them certainly had them. It just depended on how they controlled that greed.

The elves are renowned for their high self-esteem. If ordinary citizens are like that, then what about the nobility?

A high self-esteem that prevents them from bowing their heads to anyone, even fellow nobles.

If they find it difficult to bow their heads to fellow nobles, then what about the kings who are sometimes chosen from among the common people?

People whose origins, lineage, and upbringing are unknown. All the nobles look down on them.

If the king weren't chosen by the gods, they wouldn't even bother to look at them, let alone bowing their heads.

Even heroes, if they were mere commoners, and not chosen by the gods, would be treated the same way.

So, are they simply dissatisfied with their gods' chosen ones?

No.They aren't simply dissatisfied, they have a desire, or rather, a thirst for power.

They desire the throne. They want their family name, their descendants to lead, or rather rule the elven kingdom.

They feel that the bloodline of the true nobles is more deserving of the throne.

But they cannot, or rather, they don't dare to directly oppose the choice of what they consider the embodiment of their gods.

Although elves are known for their arrogance, they aren't so foolish.

While they sometimes doubt the prophecies of the world tree, they aren't foolish enough to directly oppose the gods.

However, to satisfy their greed, they find another way, to pit the king against the hero.

Two people who were beyond doubt because they were chosen by the gods.

But what if they began to doubt each other?

That's what they thought.

Initially, they took action by complaining about the king's strangeness to the hero.

But it never worked.

The hero of the elven kingdom, a beautiful woman with sparkling yellow eyes like topaz gems, Myrielle.

She used to be just an ordinary girl who lived in a village quite far from the center of the kingdom. Until her life suddenly changed when she was chosen and received a blessing from the gods.

Although the nobles continuously revealed the king's inappropriate actions, Myrielle was not so easy to believe.

Myrielle knew the nature of elves who had high egos. Especially the nobles.

Those who had been silent and served the king well were now starting to try to defame the king.

Why? She didn't know.

Could they be starting to feel disgusted because they served a king who came from the common people? Who knows.

Myrielle tried not to listen to their words. Because Myrielle believed that if the god's chosen person was a good person.

Could the god make a mistake in choosing someone? Wouldn't that be ridiculous?

In fact, the opposite. Myrielle began to feel something strange about these nobles.

Although it was true that the current king and previous kings had sometimes spoken of wars that had claimed the lives of many elven warriors. But those were wars for the benefit of the elves, not the other way around.

Although Myrielle disliked war, and sometimes the image of corpses strewn with faces full of agony still lingered in her memory, Myrielle still tried to believe.

That was until she saw the half-bloods far from the outskirts of the kingdom.

Seeing them, Myrielle realized that the races should unite, not be hostile to each other.

Especially after her encounter with heroes from other races. In Myrielle's eyes, the half-bloods were the embodiment of true peace.

However, unfortunately, the rejection of them was quite strong.

Therefore, her suspicions towards the nobles grew. Although she didn't know what they were planning, it didn't seem like a good thing.

Perhaps it was true, with the disappearance of the heroes, the elves' rather old-fashioned thinking could be opened up a little.

But, it turned out that was also a mistake.

The disappearance of the elven hero shocked the entire elven kingdom.

Had the hero truly abandoned them?

No one knew if the hero would begin protecting them from the shadows. Nor did anyone think so.

Amidst the chaos and anxiety, someone exploited the gap, claiming that the hero had betrayed the elven kingdom, Elarion.
