Xiao Bao picked a bunch of amaranth in the backyard, then ran to the front garden to pick a small handful of long beans and an eggplant.
Seeing there was enough to eat, Xiao Bao moved his gaze away from the taro sprouts. Xiao Bao loved the soft and sticky little taros the most, but they were still little and hadn't grown taller than him yet. It would take another two months before they were ready to eat.
Xiao Bao counted the days on his fingers every day.
"Mom, let's have eggplant omelette tonight, stir-fried amaranth, and stir-fried beans," Xiao Bao said, carrying the vegetables to the grocery store.
Coincidentally, an aunt came to buy salt, she looked at the purple amaranth and laughed as she said to Yuan Chun, "This amaranth only grows in the South, you're quite capable to have gotten amaranth seeds. Are you keeping any seeds for next year? Remember to keep more, I haven't eaten amaranth for so many years."
