Chapter 17 - EPISODE 17 : BETWEEN CLASSES

Westridge University, Maple Valley

Several Days Later

The magic of the Autumn Festival had finally disappeared.

The lanterns were gone.

The temporary stages had been dismantled.

The food stalls that had occupied the central courtyard were nowhere to be seen.

Even the maple leaves that had once been arranged carefully along the pathways had been scattered by several days of autumn wind.

Westridge University had returned to normal.

Or at least, as normal as a university could be.

Students hurried between lectures.

Professors carried stacks of papers through crowded hallways.

The cafeteria remained permanently noisy.

And somewhere between all those ordinary moments, friendships were quietly becoming something more.

---

MONDAY MORNING

Lisa Walker walked through the main entrance of Westridge with a coffee in one hand and her phone in the other.

She was reading a message from her mother.

MOM: Don't forget to eat something before your afternoon class.

Lisa smiled.

She typed back:

LISA: I had breakfast.

She paused.

Then added:

LISA: Coffee counts.

Three dots appeared almost immediately.

MOM: No.

Lisa laughed under her breath.

"Okay, Mom."

She put the phone away.

The university courtyard was already crowded.

Lisa looked around casually.

She saw Sophie talking to two classmates.

Kevin was attempting to balance a soccer ball on his foot while walking.

Ethan was surrounded by several students near the entrance.

And then—

She saw Austin.

He was sitting alone on a stone bench beneath a maple tree.

A book rested open in his hands.

His headphones covered his ears.

His attention appeared completely absorbed in whatever he was reading.

Lisa stopped walking.

She didn't know why.

She simply looked at him.

For a few seconds.

Then she smiled.

Not the teasing smile she usually gave him.

Something quieter.

She started walking toward him.

---

THE BENCH

Lisa stood in front of him.

Austin didn't react.

She waved one hand in front of his face.

Nothing.

She waved again.

Still nothing.

Lisa leaned slightly closer.

"Hello?"

Austin finally looked up.

He removed one side of his headphones.

"Hi."

Lisa smiled.

"I've been standing here for approximately ten years."

Austin glanced at the empty space beside him.

"You could've sat down."

Lisa stared at him.

"That's your response?"

"Yes."

She laughed.

"You're improving."

Austin returned his attention to the book.

Lisa sat beside him.

"What are you reading?"

"Finance."

She looked at the page.

Her expression immediately changed.

"Never mind."

Austin looked at her.

"You asked."

"I made a mistake."

A tiny smile appeared on his face.

Lisa noticed.

"There."

Austin frowned slightly.

"What?"

"You smiled again."

"I didn't."

"You did."

"I was reacting to you."

"That's still a smile."

Austin shook his head.

Lisa smiled proudly.

"I knew it."

---

For several moments they sat quietly.

Lisa usually hated silence.

But this one felt different.

She looked around the courtyard.

Students rushed past them.

Someone shouted from across the lawn.

A bicycle bell rang.

A professor hurried toward the administration building.

Yet sitting beside Austin...

The noise somehow felt distant.

Lisa glanced at him.

"You know..."

Austin didn't look up.

"What?"

"I don't think you actually hate people."

"I don't."

"You just act like you do."

"I don't act."

She laughed.

"See? That's exactly what I mean."

Austin finally closed his book.

"You talk a lot."

Lisa smiled.

"I know."

"Why?"

"Because silence makes things awkward."

Austin looked at her.

"Does it?"

She paused.

For some reason, that question felt different.

She looked around.

Then back at him.

"...Not with you."

Austin said nothing.

But his eyes stayed on hers for a moment longer than usual.

The first bell rang.

Lisa looked toward the academic building.

"Oh, no."

She stood quickly.

"Class."

Austin opened his book again.

"You're late."

Lisa pointed at him.

"Don't encourage this behavior."

She grabbed her bag.

"See you."

Austin nodded.

"See you."

Lisa walked away.

After a few steps, she looked back.

Austin was already reading again.

She smiled.

Then continued toward class.

---

THE CLASSROOM

Sophie was already sitting in her seat.

She looked at Lisa.

Then at the clock.

Then back at Lisa.

"You were late."

"I know."

"Why?"

Lisa placed her bag down.

"I was talking."

"To whom?"

Lisa hesitated.

Sophie immediately smiled.

"Oh."

Lisa narrowed her eyes.

"Don't."

"I didn't say anything."

"You were about to."

Sophie leaned closer.

"Austin?"

Lisa sighed.

"Yes."

Sophie smiled.

"You went looking for him."

Lisa looked away.

"I happened to see him."

"You happened to see him sitting alone in a corner of campus."

"Yes."

"And then happened to sit beside him."

"Yes."

"And happened to spend ten minutes talking to him."

Lisa turned toward her.

"Are you finished?"

Sophie smiled.

"For now."

---

The professor entered.

The room became quiet.

Lisa opened her notebook.

But a small smile remained on her face.

---

BETWEEN CLASSES

Two hours later, the hallway erupted with students.

The moment the lecture ended, everyone rushed outside.

Lisa stepped into the corridor with Sophie.

Kevin appeared almost immediately.

"Food."

Sophie looked at him.

"That's your entire thought process?"

"At this hour? Yes."

Lisa laughed.

"Where's Ethan?"

Kevin shrugged.

"Probably charming someone."

Sophie rolled her eyes.

"Shocking."

The three began walking toward the cafeteria.

Then Lisa stopped.

"Wait."

Sophie turned.

"What?"

Lisa pointed toward the opposite hallway.

"I forgot my notebook."

Kevin groaned.

"We just escaped."

"I'll catch up."

She turned around.

Sophie watched her disappear.

Then looked at Kevin.

Kevin looked back.

"What?"

Sophie smiled.

"Nothing."

---

Lisa returned to the classroom.

Her notebook was still on the desk.

She picked it up.

When she stepped back into the hallway—

She nearly collided with someone.

A hand caught her notebook before it hit the floor.

Lisa looked up.

Austin.

Again.

She laughed.

"Seriously?"

Austin handed the notebook back.

"You have a habit."

"Of what?"

"Walking into people."

Lisa smiled.

"Only interesting ones."

Austin paused.

For a fraction of a second...

He didn't know what to say.

Lisa walked past him.

Then stopped.

"You coming?"

Austin looked at her.

"Where?"

"Food."

He looked toward the cafeteria.

"I already ate."

Lisa nodded.

"Okay."

She started walking.

After a moment—

Austin followed.

---

THE CAFETERIA

The cafeteria was crowded.

Kevin had somehow secured a table near the windows.

Sophie sat beside him.

Ethan arrived a few moments later.

He looked toward Lisa.

"Finally."

Lisa sat down.

"I forgot my notebook."

Ethan smiled.

"Again?"

Lisa pointed at him.

"Don't start."

Austin quietly took the seat at the far end.

Ethan glanced at him.

Their eyes met.

Neither spoke.

Kevin broke the silence.

"So..."

Everyone looked at him.

Kevin smiled.

"Who wants dessert?"

Sophie stared.

"We haven't eaten yet."

"Exactly."

---

Lunch continued.

Conversation moved from assignments to professors to campus gossip.

Ethan kept everyone laughing.

Kevin exaggerated a story about soccer practice.

Sophie challenged every ridiculous part of it.

Lisa joined almost every conversation.

Austin mostly listened.

But occasionally—

He spoke.

A short comment.

A dry observation.

A sarcastic answer.

And every time he did...

Lisa noticed.

She was beginning to understand his language.

Austin didn't need many words.

When he spoke...

He meant them.

---

At one point Ethan leaned toward Lisa.

"There's a student concert Friday night."

Lisa looked interested.

"Really?"

"Yeah. Local band. Outdoor stage."

"That sounds fun."

"You should come."

Lisa smiled.

"Maybe."

Ethan smiled back.

"That's not a no."

Across the table—

Austin continued eating.

His expression didn't change.

But his attention had shifted.

He heard every word.

---

AFTERNOON

The sun began descending behind the university buildings.

Lisa walked across campus alone.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Sophie.

SOPHIE: You coming to the library?

Lisa typed:

LISA: In five.

She put the phone away.

Then noticed someone walking ahead.

Austin.

She slowed down.

For a moment she considered calling his name.

Then she smiled.

Why was she suddenly thinking about talking to him?

She didn't know.

Maybe because conversations with him were becoming easier.

Maybe because his silence no longer felt uncomfortable.

Or maybe...

She simply liked being around him.

Lisa shook her head.

"Stop overthinking."

She continued walking.

---

AUSTIN

Austin heard footsteps behind him.

He already knew who it was.

He didn't turn.

Lisa eventually caught up.

"Hey."

"Hey."

They walked side by side.

For several seconds neither spoke.

Then Lisa said,

"You know what's weird?"

Austin looked at her.

"What?"

"We can walk without talking now."

He looked ahead.

"Is that weird?"

"For me?"

"Yes."

Lisa smiled.

"Very."

A pause.

Then Austin said quietly,

"You're getting used to it."

Lisa looked at him.

"Maybe."

Another silence.

This one wasn't uncomfortable.

It was easy.

Familiar.

Austin glanced at her.

Lisa was looking ahead, smiling faintly.

Neither noticed how naturally they had begun walking at the same pace.

---

THE FIRST CHANGE

They reached the library entrance.

Lisa stopped.

"I have to go."

Austin nodded.

"Okay."

She turned toward the doors.

Then looked back.

"Hey, Austin."

He looked at her.

"Yeah?"

"Tomorrow morning..."

She hesitated.

"Do you sit on that bench?"

Austin understood immediately.

"Usually."

Lisa smiled.

"Good."

She walked inside.

Austin remained outside.

He looked at the library doors.

Then toward the bench visible across the courtyard.

For the first time...

He realized something.

Tomorrow morning...

He would be waiting.

Not because he always sat there.

But because now...

He knew someone might come looking for him.

A faint smile appeared.

---

FINAL SCENE

That evening, Maple Valley settled beneath another cool autumn night.

The streets around Westridge glowed beneath streetlights.

Students walked between cafés and dormitories.

Some studied.

Some laughed.

Some were already making plans for the weekend.

Life continued.

And somewhere within that ordinary rhythm...

Something extraordinary was quietly forming.

Lisa had started looking for Austin.

Austin had started waiting for Lisa.

Neither called it love.

Neither understood it yet.

But sometimes...

Love didn't announce itself.

Sometimes it simply appeared between classes.

In a shared walk.

A quiet conversation.

A seat beside someone.

And the feeling that...

tomorrow, you wanted to see them again.
