Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Starfall Auction

The grand Crystal Pavilion floated high above Luminara Reach, suspended on a massive platform of living star-stone that shimmered with inner constellations. Golden runes danced along its edges, and the entire structure hummed softly with the dense essence of the 3rd Heaven — that noticeably richer atmosphere, at least ten percent more invigorating than anything Joshua had known in the 4th Heaven. The air tasted faintly of starlight and possibility, carrying the distant melodies of luminous spirit birds that wheeled between the drifting isles.

Joshua stood at the center of the auction hall, dressed in simple yet elegant dark robes that bore the subtle insignia of his Earl title. At twenty-two years old, he carried himself with quiet confidence forged through years of tempered foundation and relentless climbs. Around him, nobles in ornate silks and glowing artifacts filled the floating seats, their conversations a low murmur of ambition and veiled rivalry.

The twins had turned fourteen just weeks earlier. During their birthday celebration on the manor balcony, Kai had declared with youthful fire, "Only two more years until we can challenge the stairway with you, big brother! We'll train every day so we don't hold you back!"

Mia had nodded vigorously beside him, her eyes bright. "We'll make sure the whole family ascends together again."

Their excitement still echoed in Joshua's mind as the auctioneer's voice rang out, amplified by essence-infused crystals.

"Next item — Lot 47: The Starfall Site! A remote zone in the Outer Drift where heavenly ore fragments frequently crash from higher skies. This deposit has produced significant yields in the past, but due to unstable spatial rifts and aggressive essence beasts, it carries considerable risk. Bidding starts at two hundred thousand digital star shards!"

Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Several nobles leaned forward with interest, but many quickly lost enthusiasm as the dangers were reiterated.

Joshua remained silent at first, observing. His S-rank Ascendant Jade pulsed gently against his chest, Aether's neutral presence a constant companion in his mind.

The bidding climbed steadily.

"Two hundred fifty thousand!"

"Three hundred thousand from House Varyn!"

A smug-looking noble in crimson robes raised his paddle. "Four hundred thousand. This site will be a fine addition to my collection of risky ventures — if one has the strength to tame it, of course."

Joshua finally stepped forward, his voice calm but carrying clearly across the pavilion. "Five hundred thousand digital star shards."

A heavy silence fell. Heads turned toward him — the anomaly, the passer-by who had ascended with his entire family and showed little interest in noble politics.

The crimson-robed noble narrowed his eyes, a sneer curling his lips. "You again? The famous Joshua who treats the 3rd Heaven like a mere waypoint. You really think you can handle a Starfall Site? Most experienced nobles won't touch that death trap, yet here you are throwing away good shards like a fool."

Joshua met the man's gaze steadily, his expression unchanging. "The site is dangerous, yes. That's precisely why the price remains reasonable. I'm willing to take the risk. Are you?"

Laughter rippled from a few corners, but the noble's face darkened. "Arrogant passer-by. You climbed with your parents and little siblings like it was a family outing. Now you want to play miner in the Outer Drift? You'll die out there, and your precious family will be left without their golden ticket."

Joshua's voice remained polite but firm. "My family is exactly why I'm bidding. The potential rewards will secure our future. Five hundred thousand — going once?"

The auctioneer glanced between them, then continued smoothly. "Five hundred thousand from Earl Joshua. Any further bids?"

The crimson-robed noble hesitated, then slammed his paddle down in frustration. "Fine. Let the fool have it. We'll see how long he lasts before the rifts tear him apart."

The gavel fell with a resonant chime. "Sold! The Starfall Site belongs to Earl Joshua."

Whispers erupted throughout the pavilion as Joshua collected the official deed — a glowing jade tablet that projected holographic coordinates and hazard warnings. Several nobles watched him with a mix of curiosity, disdain, and calculation. One older S-ranker approached as Joshua prepared to leave, speaking in a low voice.

"You're making enemies with that attitude, boy. Some of us have spent decades carving out influence here. You treat the entire realm like a temporary inn. One day that arrogance will catch up to you."

Joshua offered a respectful nod. "I respect those who built their lives here. My path simply leads higher. No disrespect intended."

The man snorted and walked away, muttering, "Passer-by…"

Back at the manor that evening, the floating gardens glowed softly under the twilight sky. The family gathered on the wide balcony overlooking the drifting isles. Flying constructs streaked past in the distance at speeds no peak S-ranker could match on foot, their trails painting the heavens with light.

His mother hugged him tightly the moment he stepped inside. "Five hundred thousand? That's an enormous sum, Joshua. Are you certain about this?"

"I am," he replied gently, showing them the deed. "The site is risky, but the potential star shards could change everything for us. I've already arranged for the Aetherial Eclipse — a high-speed aerial vehicle capable of one million miles per hour — and a squad of mid-grade combat automatons for support. I'll be gone roughly a year, but I'll return safely."

Father placed a steady hand on his shoulder. "We trust you, son. Just… be careful out there. We didn't climb this far to lose you to some remote mine."

Kai bounced on his heels, eyes wide with excitement. "Can we come see the vehicle before you leave? It sounds amazing!"

Mia nodded eagerly. "And when we turn sixteen in two years, we'll be ready to climb with you. We've been training hard with Lira!"

Joshua ruffled their hair affectionately. "I know you have. For now, keep enjoying the reserves and phenomena we couldn't reach before. The Eternal Bloom Gardens, the Mirror Veil Lakes — explore them while I'm away. When I return, we'll be even stronger as a family."

Jared, the high-grade automaton butler, approached with perfect timing, carrying a tray of essence-infused tea. "The Aetherial Eclipse has been delivered and fully provisioned, my lord. Mid-grade combat automatons are loaded and ready for deployment. Shall I prepare departure protocols for tomorrow?"

"Yes, Jared. Thank you."

As night deepened and the luminous bridges between isles glowed like rivers of stars, Joshua stood alone on the balcony for a moment, looking out at the vast majesty of the 3rd Heaven. The minor resentments from certain nobles — the cold glances, the muttered "passer-by" comments — lingered in the background like distant thunder, but they did not shake his resolve.

He had the ingredients for his parents' ascendant elixirs fully prepared and stored safely. The high-grade potential of the Starfall Site could multiply their reserves dramatically. The stairway to heaven continued calling, and this risky venture was simply another step forward.

Tomorrow he would depart into danger, but tonight he savored the warmth of home — his parents' quiet pride, the twins' boundless energy, and the secure knowledge that everything he did was for their shared future.

The 3rd Heaven stretched endlessly before him, beautiful and treacherous in equal measure.

He was ready.
