As the soldiers spread out, the grouping became smaller and smaller. Each had a certain range they had expected to cover. However, the base was bigger than they anticipated.
They didn't have enough people to cover all the bases, and to make matters worse, many of their men had been abducted. Though the term could be used loosely. It would be better to say they were seduced away.
Ember and the others did not ask anyone in the base to do this. It might be because the men were new. They were taken one by one to different places until there were only lone soldiers walking around.
