Chapter 20 - The Calm Before the Storm

The bells of Lunareth rang across the treetops at sunrise, not with urgency, but with a deep, steady rhythm that stirred the entire city awake. It was a call not for danger, but preparation.

The kingdom knew something had changed.

Shoko stood on a balcony overlooking the crystalline towers, the rising sun tinting the sky with rose-colored light. He rested his hand on the railing, watching groups of elven guards march across bridges, mages erect barriers around the outer rings, and runners carrying scrolls between towers.

Ariandel stepped beside him. "They work fast."

Shoko nodded slowly. "All of this because of me."

"Not because of you," she corrected. "Because something is coming for you."

Shoko turned to her. "That does not make me feel better."

She laughed softly, brushing a strand of white hair behind his ear. "You will be fine. You have us."

He looked down at the city again. "I hope that is enough."

Before Ariandel could answer, the door behind them opened and Elyndra entered. Her expression was bright, but her eyes carried the same weight they had since the masked entity's appearance.

"Shoko," she said, "the King wants to see us in the archives."

Shoko tilted his head. "Why the archives?"

Elyndra hesitated before saying, "He found something."

Ariandel frowned. "Lead the way."

They followed Elyndra into the depths of the palace, descending spiral staircases lined with glowing blue lanterns. The air grew cooler, the halls older. Eventually they reached a chamber whose walls were covered with carved symbols and sealed stone doors.

Velion stood waiting for them, hands behind his back. He nodded to Shoko.

"I am glad you came quickly."

Shoko stepped forward. "Elyndra said you found something."

Velion motioned toward a massive stone tablet covered in markings. "This was discovered during the construction of Lunareth centuries ago. We believed it to be a ceremonial record." His expression darkened. "But it is not."

Ariandel studied the carvings. "These symbols… they are ancient script."

Velion placed his palm on the tablet. Thin lines of light traced the carvings, revealing a depiction of a tall figure with wings, a mask, and flowing robes.

Shoko felt his heart stop.

"That is him…"

Velion nodded solemnly. "We do not know his true name, but our ancestors called him the Echoed Herald. A being tied to creation, fate, and the origin of magic itself."

Elyndra looked away, biting her lip.

Velion continued. "According to this archive, the Herald appears only when a wielder of the Dual Thread awakens."

Shoko stared at the glowing carvings. "Then why is he trying to control me?"

Velion shook his head. "We do not know. But he is not bound to our world in the same way we are. He exists between places. Between choices. Between… destinies."

Ariandel clenched her fists. "And he wants Shoko for something."

Velion turned toward them. "Which is why we must strengthen him quickly."

Shoko looked up. "How?"

"In the Threadforge," Velion answered. "But not with basic techniques. You must learn resonance."

Ariandel inhaled sharply. "Already? That is far too soon."

Shoko asked, "What is resonance?"

Velion looked directly into his eyes. "The ability to align your magic with the world around you. Every mage learns to create a thread. Few learn to weave with the world itself."

Ariandel added, "It multiplies a mage's power significantly. But it is dangerous without stability."

Velion nodded. "And that is why you need it. The Herald will not wait."

Shoko stepped forward, placing a hand on the cold stone of the tablet. "I will learn it."

Ariandel frowned. "Shoko…"

He turned to her. "I am not afraid anymore. Whatever he wants, I will not let him have control over me."

Ariandel slowly relaxed, though worry still lingered in her eyes. "Very well. But I will be at your side the entire time."

Elyndra smiled softly. "And I will help however I can."

Velion motioned toward the exit. "Then follow me."

They walked back toward the training floors. The halls grew brighter as runes lit with each of Velion's footsteps.

When they reached the Threadforge, the chamber hummed with latent power. The runes were already active, waiting.

Ariandel stepped behind Shoko. "Ready?"

Shoko nodded. "Let's begin."

Velion stood at the edge of the runes. "Focus on your breathing. Feel the room, not just yourself."

Shoko closed his eyes. His threads appeared naturally now, a mixture of silver and faint gold. He moved them carefully, letting them hover.

Ariandel's voice guided him. "Good. Now let the runes speak. Do not control everything. Listen."

Shoko tried. At first, he sensed nothing. Just light and silence.

But then… something shifted.

The floor beneath him pulsed. The runes vibrated like a heartbeat.

Shoko whispered, "I… feel it."

Velion whispered, "Then answer it."

Shoko exhaled and allowed his threads to respond. They stretched downward, connecting with the glowing lines under his feet. When they touched, a wave of energy surged through him.

Ariandel stepped forward. "Careful…"

But Shoko didn't falter. He steadied the flow, guiding it up his spine and through his arms. His threads brightened.

The room began to shake slightly.

Elyndra took a nervous step back. "He is resonating too quickly."

Velion replied, "He is adapting. Look at his stance. Look at his focus."

Shoko gritted his teeth as the power increased. The runes lit up in a slow, spiraling pattern that circled the entire chamber. The lights traveled upward, reaching the ceiling and forming a glowing ring.

Ariandel shouted, "Shoko, pull back if it is too much!"

He shook his head. "I am fine."

The resonance deepened. In his mind, for a brief moment, Shoko felt the world around him clearly. The stone walls, the magic in the air, the crystals within the mountain. All connected by invisible threads.

His threads.

He reached out with both hands and allowed the power to flow.

The runes blazed with bright silver light.

A final pulse surged, sending a shockwave through the room.

Elyndra covered her eyes. "Shoko!"

Velion raised a barrier just in time.

When the light faded, Shoko was kneeling but conscious. His threads shimmered around him like a calm silver-gold halo.

Ariandel rushed to him. "Are you hurt?"

Shoko looked up slowly. "No… I am just tired."

He smiled faintly. "But I did it."

Velion exhaled. "Resonance achieved in a single attempt. Remarkable."

Elyndra approached and gently touched Shoko's shoulder. "You scared me again…"

Shoko chuckled. "Sorry. I am getting used to that, I think."

Ariandel pulled him into a gentle hug. "I am proud of you."

Shoko rested his head against her arm. "Thank you."

But before the moment could settle, a soldier suddenly ran into the chamber, panting.

"Your Majesty! We have a situation."

Velion stood tall. "Speak."

"A scout unit returned from the southern border." The soldier swallowed hard. "They report an unknown force approaching Lunareth. Not human. Not beast. Something else."

Elyndra's eyes widened.

Ariandel's grip tightened protectively around Shoko.

Velion's expression darkened. "Gather the council. Prepare all defenses."

Shoko slowly stood, even though his legs trembled. "Velion…"

The King looked at him. "Yes?"

Shoko narrowed his eyes with determination.

"Let me help."

Ariandel immediately said, "Absolutely not."

Velion hesitated. "In your condition, you need rest."

But Shoko shook his head. "This is happening because of me. I will not hide."

Ariandel turned him sharply toward her. "Shoko, you just resonated for the first time. You need recovery."

Shoko met her gaze, steady and resolute. "If something is coming, I am not letting it reach you. Or Lunareth. Or anyone."

Ariandel's breath caught.

Elyndra stared at him with admiration and fear mixed together.

Velion finally nodded. "You may assist. But only under my direct command."

Shoko bowed his head slightly. "Understood."

The soldier saluted and rushed out. Velion followed, his pace rapid and urgent.

Ariandel sighed deeply. "You are going to give me gray hair, Shoko."

Shoko smiled tiredly. "I will try to limit the danger to only once a week."

Elyndra laughed softly. "Good luck with that."

But as they left the Threadforge, Shoko paused and looked back.

The runes still glowed faintly.

And in the reflection on the polished stone floor…

he thought he saw the masked figure standing behind him again.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then the vision faded.

Shoko clenched his fist.

Whatever was coming… he would be ready.
