Chapter 70 - The Man Who Should Have Stayed Gone

Morning arrived uneasy.

Not quiet—uneasy.

The forest felt thinner, like something had scraped against it during the night and left it raw. Even the aether moved strangely, currents bending and snapping back into place as if embarrassed by what had passed through.

They broke camp without words.

Kairo moved with the same measured pace as always, scroll secured beneath his cloak, presence muted. Anyone watching casually would think nothing had changed. Selene knew better. She could feel it when she walked beside him—the way the space around him no longer settled properly, like his existence disturbed the flow just enough to be noticed.

Sensi arrived late.

He didn't step out of shadows this time. He came down the path openly, hands behind his back, eyes scanning the camp like he was counting something only he could see.

"We move," he said. "Greek ruins. East."

Kasai muttered, "Figures."

They followed.

The land shifted as they traveled. Trees thinned. Stone rose. Broken columns leaned against one another like old men sharing secrets. Symbols etched into marble caught the light at odd angles, worn smooth by centuries of neglect.

Selene ran her fingers over one as they passed. "This place predates the villages."

"Yes," Reina replied. "Before bloodlines hardened into law."

Kairo felt the disturbance before anyone else.

A slight hitch in the aether. Like a breath held too long.

He slowed.

Selene noticed immediately. "You feel it."

"Yes."

Sensi stopped too.

That alone was enough to put everyone on edge.

They rounded the bend together and found the man waiting.

He stood in the open, leaning against a cracked pillar, posture relaxed to the point of insult. He looked ordinary—weathered clothes, unremarkable face, hair streaked with grey. No visible aura flare. No weapon drawn.

But the space around him was wrong.

The aether bent away, curving subtly, as if unwilling to touch him.

Sensi's gaze sharpened.

"So," Sensi said, voice calm, "you survived."

The man smiled faintly. "You sound disappointed."

Kasai's hand drifted to his blade. Selene's stance shifted, weight balanced. Reina's eyes flicked between the two men, already calculating escape routes.

Kairo's Pure Eye stirred without fully opening.

The man's gaze slid to him instantly.

"Ah," he said. "You're further along than I expected."

Sensi took a step forward. The ground cracked beneath his foot. "You will not speak to him."

The man ignored him. "How does it feel?" he asked Kairo. "Carrying something that refuses to settle?"

Kairo met his eyes. "Like it doesn't belong."

The man chuckled softly. "Good. It never did."

Sensi moved.

No warning. No flare. One moment he stood still, the next the air detonated where he'd been, his fist already tearing through space toward the man's head.

The man wasn't faster.

He simply wasn't there.

Sensi's strike carved a trench through stone and earth, debris exploding outward. Selene threw up a barrier just in time, teeth gritting as the shockwave rattled through her bones.

Kasai stared. "That wasn't even aimed at us."

The man reappeared several steps away, dusting his sleeve. "Still swinging like the world owes you something."

Sensi straightened slowly, aura rolling off him now, heavy enough to make breathing difficult. "You should have stayed buried."

"I tried," the man replied. "You're persistent."

His eyes returned to Kairo.

"You opened it again," he said. "The eye."

Kairo didn't deny it.

The man nodded approvingly. "Good. Means the scroll accepted you."

Selene's jaw tightened. She already knew about the scroll—but hearing it spoken so casually, like an inevitability, made her skin crawl.

"You named the mark," Kairo said.

The man's smile widened slightly. "I did."

Sensi's aura spiked.

"Oroboros," the man continued calmly. "The mark that consumes cycles. Power stolen, power returned. You already carry the first instruction."

Kairo's fingers curled slowly.

Sensi stepped forward again. "You will stop."

The man tilted his head. "Or what? You'll erase me again?"

That word—again—hung heavy.

Kairo's gaze snapped to Sensi. "Again?"

The Pure Eye flared fully.

The world fractured into flow and pressure, layers peeling back. Kairo saw it then—not just Sensi's power, but the scars in it. Places where aether had been ripped out violently and replaced with something harsher. Something fueled by obsession.

Sensi lunged.

Kairo stepped into the convergence point instinctively, pushing with precision rather than force. The aether redirected, sliding past him like water diverted by stone.

The impact tore through the ruins instead.

Sensi froze.

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Kasai whispered, "He did it again…"

Sensi turned slowly to face Kairo, eyes burning. "You are walking a path you do not understand."

Kairo didn't look away. "Then explain it."

The man laughed softly. "He won't. He can't."

Sensi's voice dropped. "Leave. Now."

The man inclined his head, gaze lingering on Kairo. "You already have what you need—for now. The rest will come looking for you."

Before vanishing, he added quietly, "When the eye matures, it won't just show you aether. It will show you intent."

Then he was gone.

The ruins settled into silence.

Sensi faced the group. "This mission ends here. We return."

No one argued.

As they walked back, Selene moved beside Kairo, close enough that their shoulders nearly brushed.

"You didn't tell him everything," she said.

"No."

"And he knows."

"Yes."

She exhaled slowly. "You're standing between two monsters."

Kairo nodded. "That's where the answers are."

Selene glanced at him, something unreadable in her eyes. "Just don't disappear without warning."

He didn't answer.

But he slowed his steps to match hers.

Far away, unseen and patient, the cycle tightened.

And the mark pulsed—waiting for the next piece to fall into place.
