Chapter 62 - Shadows in Apollo’s Village

Dawn stretched over the Greek countryside like molten gold spilling across olive groves. Mist clung stubbornly to the hills, hiding the first hints of the village they were meant to infiltrate. Kairo adjusted the hood over his face, the scroll safely tucked beneath his robes, and glanced at Selene beside him. Her violet aura pulsed faintly, betraying the anxiety she refused to admit.

"You ready?" he asked quietly, voice calm, clipped, almost emotionless.

She nodded, brushing her white hair from her face. "As ready as I'll ever be. Let's make this quick."

They moved through the trees with practiced ease, every step measured. This was the first real test after the scroll: infiltration. Unlike the training yard, where laughter and mistakes were permitted, the village demanded silence and subtlety. Kairo's Pure Eye flickered faintly behind his eyelids, picking up the auras of villagers, soldiers, and, somewhere deeper, traces of experimental creatures.

Selene leaned closer, whispering, "You're… not going to show your power, right?"

Kairo shook his head. "Not unless we have no choice. Any attention now, and we're done before we start."

She exhaled softly, a sound he caught without turning. Despite the mission's gravity, there was something grounding about her presence — a reminder that he wasn't entirely alone in the world. Yet the weight of the Mark beneath his skin reminded him that attachments could be dangerous.

They reached the village outskirts. Smoke from morning fires curled lazily toward the sky, mingling with the mist. Children ran along cobblestone streets, while traders set up stalls filled with fruits, fabrics, and trinkets that glimmered faintly with minor aether enhancements.

Kairo narrowed his eyes. The Pure Eye revealed the hidden layers: beneath the casual chatter, the villagers' auras pulsed with lineage. Apollo's descendants radiated light so pure it almost burned his vision. Others carried minor god traces, still strong, still dangerous. And in the market square, one figure's aura was unusually dense — a prodigy, no doubt.

Selene whispered, "We split up to gather intel. You take the northern districts. I'll check the southern. Signals if you find anything unusual."

He nodded once and disappeared into the shadows.

The northern district was quiet. Kairo moved like a ghost among the morning bustle, noting patterns in movement and aura density. Every stall, every alley, every whisper of wind carried information. He glimpsed a small temple where light shimmered unnaturally — a clue to a hidden cache. Carefully, he approached, letting the Pure Eye guide him to subtle traps and wards, each one dismantled in thought before he physically stepped near them.

Selene, meanwhile, moved through the southern streets, her violet aura practically invisible to untrained eyes. She noticed minor experiments tied to Apollo's lineage: small creatures infused with light aether, unnatural hybrids that twitched in cages, obedient but clearly dangerous. Her heart tightened slightly, but she maintained her composure. Kairo was nearby in spirit; she could feel him, even if he didn't speak.

The first small encounter came sooner than expected. A lone guard carrying a light-infused spear rounded the corner of Kairo's path. Kairo watched the aura. Weak but vigilant. He stepped from the shadows, voice calm.

"Good morning," he said, almost teasingly.

The guard froze, confused by the sudden figure. Before the man could react, Kairo flicked a finger. A pulse of aether — invisible yet heavy — sent the spear clattering harmlessly to the ground. The guard dropped to his knees, stunned, aura momentarily nullified.

Kairo's eyes flicked to the man's chest. Weak aether, ordinary lineage, no prodigy training. Perfect.

He whispered to himself, "Scope."

The guard's aura exploded faintly under the amplified Pure Eye, revealing hidden information: the location of experimental creatures, the layout of the village's minor defenses, and the hidden temple cache. Kairo smirked faintly. This wasn't a fight. It was a game of observation. And he was already winning.

Selene faced her own minor test. A small hybrid — half-hawk, half-luminescent wolf — lunged at her from a cage accidentally left open. Its violet-aether aura pulsed like a heartbeat. She rolled back, narrowly dodging a talon swipe, and muttered under her breath, "You think I'm scared?"

A flick of her hand sent threads of her own aura weaving through the air, creating a minor illusion: the creature thought itself surrounded and froze. Selene closed the distance, her dagger slicing softly through shadow-infused air, cutting off the beast's tether to the temple's energy. She released a faint laugh, adrenaline coursing through her veins. "Too easy."

By mid-morning, both had gathered enough information to locate the hidden scrolls — a fragmented piece each, necessary to advance their understanding of Kairo's Mark. The northern temple's entrance lay beneath a veil of minor wards. Kairo approached, scanning each sigil, each aether-infused lock. He muttered under his breath, one word:

"Focus."

His Pure Eye flared. Symbols shifted before him, revealing pathways and safe spots, a dance of light and shadow. Selene arrived moments later, quietly acknowledging him with a nod.

"You found it?" she whispered.

He tilted his head slightly, expression unreadable. "It was never hidden from me."

Together, they slipped inside the temple. The interior was dim, dust motes glowing faintly in streams of light. Scrolls rested on pedestals, protected by minor wards and spectral guardians — faint echoes of Apollo's aether, waiting for intruders.

Kairo moved first, every step calculated. His Pure Eye allowed him to anticipate each guardian's strike. One swung, invisible light arcs aiming for his head — and Kairo caught it with a hand, sending the force harmlessly downward into the stone floor. "Amateurs," he muttered.

Selene followed his lead, weaving illusions that disoriented the guardians. The two moved in tandem, silent, efficient, their earlier training and unspoken trust allowing them to operate as one.

Finally, Kairo reached the central pedestal. A single scroll rested there, shimmering faintly. He crouched, hand hovering above it. His aether expanded subtly, aura flowing around the scroll like a living thing. Carefully, he lifted it, letting a faint pulse of Pure Eye sweep the room to ensure no traps remained.

Selene watched silently, her heart beating faster than usual. Not out of fear — something else entirely. She couldn't put it into words, and Kairo didn't look back.

He tucked the scroll into his robes. "Mission complete," he said, flatly.

"Not yet," Selene replied. "We still need to exfiltrate."

A sudden clatter announced reinforcements: minor guards, their aether flaring in the early light.

Kairo's lips twitched — almost amused. "Finally."

They moved through the shadows, weaving around patrols, illusions flickering, Pure Eye calculating paths. Selene felt her pulse synchronize with his movements, a rhythm that had nothing to do with fear and everything to do with trust.

A brief encounter: a guard lunged, light spear slicing the air. Kairo flicked his wrist; the strike halted midair, frozen in tension by his amplified aether. He redirected the momentum into the ceiling, knocking it open to create a distraction. Selene rolled forward, dagger flashing through spectral guardian, then slicing the man's tether, sending him sprawling but unharmed.

Outside, the village seemed normal, unaware that shadows had danced through their streets. Kairo exhaled once, a sound so soft only Selene could hear.

"You were faster than I expected," she said, breathless.

He didn't answer immediately. A flicker of amusement crossed his features, gone as quickly as it appeared. "We're leaving."

They melted into the forests, scrolls secured, hearts racing, a bond deepening silently in the space between words. The first mission was a success, but Kairo knew: this was only the beginning.

The world was wide, filled with clans, experiments, and secrets waiting to be uncovered. And somewhere, far beyond their sight, the first threads of Malrukh's influence were already moving.

For now, though, the gang would return, report their findings, and prepare for the next mission — unaware of the slow, silent storm building in Kairo's mark and Selene's heart.

And in that quiet moment, a subtle tension hung in the air — one neither spoke of: the weight of what they were about to lose, and the darkness waiting just beyond the horizon.
