Chapter 49 - Storms Beneath Marble Thrones (Kairo & Selene in the Zeus District)

The Zeus district wasn't like the quiet logic halls of Athena. Here the sky growled even when the air was calm. Lightning veins crawled across storm clouds like restless serpents, illuminating gold-tipped pillars and battle arenas etched with thunder runes. Every breath smelt like ozone — raw power in the air.

Petty quarrels here were settled with lightning.

Respect wasn't given.

It was earned, violently.

Kairo and Selene walked through the storm-forged streets together, hoods up, rain tapping softly against their cloaks. Villagers gave them side glances — foreigners were suspicious, especially ones this young, this calm.

Selene's voice was low. "Hide your fire aura. Storm users smell it like wolves smell blood."

Kairo nodded. Ever since splitting up, he felt the space where Lyssa used to walk at his side. Selene noticed — she didn't mention it, but jealousy simmered quietly like hidden embers.

The infiltration began the same night.

Arrival at the Thunder Academy

Golden gates opened to a field of pounding practice. Young warriors hurled lightning spears at stone titans. Some trained shirtless under the rain to "bond with Zeus's fury." Aether crackled in every swing. Students burst into laughter when blasts sent competitors flying.

Selene nudged Kairo.

"Different energy, right?"

He smirked faintly. "More noisy."

The academy doors thundered open and a tall blonde boy strode out. Lightning tattoos crawled up his arms like living roots. His eyes sparkled with arrogance. Clearly a prodigy.

He scanned the courtyard like he owned the sky.

Helios.

He didn't introduce himself — others whispered it like scripture.

Second strongest in the Zeus Clan.

Ranked among the village's Top Five Prodigies.

He noticed Kairo and Selene immediately, and his smile sharpened.

"New faces? You two don't smell like thunder."

Kairo kept expression flat. "Travelers. Seeking training."

Helios' laughter cracked like thunder.

"Training? Here? With those slim arms?"

Lightning cracked the ground near Kairo's foot — a warning shot.

Selene stepped forward, aura flaring a soft blue moonlight. "He wasn't asking for your permission."

Helios paused. He hadn't expected defiance.

Kairo raised his head — calm, voice flat as cold steel.

"You're blocking the entrance."

The courtyard fell silent.

Helios grinned wider — the dangerous kind.

"One duel then. If you impress me, you may enter. If not—"

Lightning wrapped his fist.

"—you crawl back to whatever dirt hole spat you out."

Selene glanced at Kairo, hesitant. Kairo's eyes flashed briefly — excitement. Internally, he was already calculating.

Storm Duel

The arena floor hissed as rainfall turned to steam. Spectators gathered quickly — prodigies fought rarely, and when they did, legends were born.

Helios flicked his wrist and lightning chains burst from the ground. Kairo didn't move. Thunder struck where he stood — or was that an afterimage?

Kairo had already side-stepped, motion so smooth it looked like time bent for him.

"Fast," Helios muttered. "But let's see your spine crack."

He clapped — Thunderclap Burst.

Kairo slid backwards with minimal strain. Selene watched from the side, heart thumping. She knew that if Kairo wanted, he could reveal his dual element and embarrass Helios instantly… but infiltration required subtlety.

So Kairo played the long game.

His attacks were calm and light, mostly defense — letting Helios show off, letting people underestimate him. Every deflection, every movement was precise, wasted no energy. Aether farming quietly through tension and combat friction.

Helios got annoyed.

Lightning condensed into a spear three meters long.

"Try blocking this!"

He hurled it.

The spear screamed like a mad god descending. Kairo's eyes went cold — the switch.

During conversations, he talked too much.

But in battle—

He became silence itself.

He reached up, two fingers extended.

Aura flickered — just enough.

Air folded around the spear's tip, bending velocity. Kairo redirected it like redirecting rain with a fingertip.

Gasps filled the arena.

Helios froze, disbelief etched across his face. Selene smiled slightly — proud, jealous, conflicted all at once.

Kairo dropped the spear harmlessly at Helios' feet.

"Too loud," he said quietly.

"Lightning listens better when you whisper."

The courtyard erupted.

Rumors spread like wildfire.

Who is he?

Did you see that?

He nullified Helios without lightning!

Is he even human?

Helios didn't know if he was insulted or fascinated.

He approached Kairo, eyes intense.

"What's your name, stranger?"

"Kairo."

Helios grinned, this time with respect.

"You'll train with us. Storm likes you."

Life in Zeus Academy

The following days became layered infiltration.

Kairo and Selene attended combat lectures — where mentors taught how to ride lightning, condense clouds, summon storm beasts. Kairo learned quick, too fast. He mastered beginner techniques in one glance. Selene pretended to struggle to avoid suspicion.

They explored library vaults at night, stealing scrolls through moonlit windows. Kairo discovered documents about Village Hierarchy — how Zeus leads through force, Athena through intellect, Poseidon through nature's pact.

He found a campaign record about Malrukh.

The dark god.

The forgotten one.

Banished but whispering from the abyss.

Villagers called him a myth to scare children — but Kairo felt the ink tremble with something real. Darkness didn't die. It waited.

Selene saw his hands clench.

"You thinking what I'm thinking?"

"If Sensei seeks revenge and power… Malrukh is the perfect source."

They exchanged looks — realization cold like winter iron.

Sensei wasn't just training them. He was preparing sacrifices.

Pieces of a bigger war.

A Strange Encounter

On their fourth infiltration night, Kairo sensed someone tailing them. He stopped walking mid-step — Selene almost bumped into him.

"Behind the pillar," he whispered.

A hooded man stepped into the moonlight. Young, pale eyes, holding a broken thunder amulet.

"You two aren't normal," he said.

"I've been watching."

Selene stiffened. Kairo didn't move.

The boy lifted his hood.

"My name is Eryx. Thunder dropout. They expelled me for losing control of my power."

His voice trembled. "Help me grow stronger… and I'll tell you secrets the academy hides."

Selene frowned. "Why trust us?"

Eryx met Kairo's eyes.

"Because you look like someone who breaks systems… not follows them."

Kairo's lips lifted slightly — not joy, just acknowledgement.

Maybe a new ally.

Or a future enemy.

Either way, useful for infiltration.

Kairo stepped forward.

"Show me your lightning."

Eryx hesitated… then unleashed a bolt that burned a tree trunk into charcoal. Raw power — wild, unstable.

Selene nodded. "He's strong."

Kairo placed a hand on Eryx's shoulder.

"Control is louder than power. Join us silently."

Eryx gulped, then bowed.

"Master Kairo—"

Kairo raised a finger. "Not master."

His eyes sharpened. "Comrade."

Somewhere far away, a storm rumbled like an omen.

Malrukh's shadow grew darker.
