In a large-scale engagement, even a Chapter Master was just a number on a casualty report. High command died in the field. It was a documented fact of this kind of war, and Nolan understood it with the part of his mind that processed strategic realities. That part was not currently in control.
He took several long breaths, and then turned on Third Company Commander Kevan Stryker.
The questions came out low and sharp, one after another. Why had the Chapter Master of the Raven Guard been taken by an enemy commander? What was the intelligence network doing while this was happening? Where were the Terminator guard assigned to Severax's personal protection?
Stryker was angry and grieving in equal measure and kept both of those things controlled while he answered. His voice was flat and precise, the way a warrior's voice gets when what they are reporting costs them something to say out loud.
The situation had deteriorated on several secondary battlefields once the concentrated Tau reinforcements came down. Severax had watched the lines thin and made the decision that Chapter Masters had always made: he led veterans directly into the breach himself. Half a company of Raven Guard, combat experienced, and he took them into a sector that was on the edge of failing.
There he had spotted the distinctive profile of an XV22 Stalker battlesuit moving through the combat zone.
He had identified it immediately as Commander Shadowsun's personal pattern. Everything about the XV22 said senior command presence, and Severax had committed to the engagement on the spot. His Terminator guard advised against it. He pressed on anyway. The Raven Guard launched three successive raid attempts at the figure in the XV22, each one failing to close the kill, and each failure pushed Severax further forward into the Tau-held position, alone, the guard unable to keep pace with the moves he was making.
On the fourth attempt, he reached her.
The figure in the XV22 Stalker went down. Severax had his kill.
An XV95 Ghostkeel declocked two meters behind him.
The heavy weapon it carried fired once, and what it produced was not a wound. Severax and his power armor came apart at the center. The Raven Guard veterans who had been trying to maintain contact with him were still two hundred meters away when it happened.
Nolan stopped moving.
He stood and let the account finish, then stood still a moment longer while everything Stryker had described assembled into a pattern.
Shadowsun had been on Prefetia throughout the engagement. She had arrived, exactly as the bait was designed to attract, but she had looked at the trap and declined to walk into the center of it. Instead she had set one of her own. The figure in the XV22 was not her: it was a decoy, worn or piloted by another Tau officer, a target that looked like the thing Severax most wanted to kill. She had placed herself in the XV95 Ghostkeel and waited in full stealth for a senior Imperial commander to overextend himself chasing the decoy.
She had not come to settle a personal account with Nolan. She had come to remove the most experienced battlefield commander the Raven Guard had, and she had done it efficiently, and she had done it without ever giving Nolan or the intelligence network anything to track.
In her calculations, apparently, Aun'Va's death was a cost of war. An acceptable cost. The expenditure of an Ethereal measured against the strategic benefit of weakening the Raven Guard's command capacity on this campaign. Narrow revenge would have required her to engage Nolan directly, which was the losing play. Winning the battle was the superior objective.
Nolan exhaled slowly and felt something in his expression settle into a different configuration.
He turned to look at Stryker.
"Order the Cadian armored regiment off the surface. Full evacuation, immediate. All Astartes begin withdrawal from their current positions."
Stryker's eyes went wide. "Lord Primarch, what are you..."
"The mineral planet." Nolan's voice was steady and cold. "It has not been mined. It has no infrastructure. For the Imperium's purposes right now, it is worthless ground. Shadowsun wants it, so let her have it." He began walking. "I am done playing a patient game with someone who plays it better than I do on this terrain. I am going to overturn the board."
Stryker fell into step behind him, waiting.
"Contact the fleet. Tell them to prepare Cyclone-class torpedoes." Nolan's voice did not change register as he said the next part. "Everything the Tau have placed on this planet, and Shadowsun with them, will follow Chapter Master Severax."
The evacuation moved efficiently. The Cadian armor pulled off the desert floor in column and loaded into transport lifters. The Raven Guard and White Scars Astartes withdrew from their positions across the planet in a pattern that was deliberately designed to look like a fighting retreat under pressure, ceding ground under fire, giving the Tau every reason to advance and consolidate. The Tau took the offered ground, occupied the positions the Imperials vacated, and pushed toward the planetary fortress. The fortress fell to them without a final defense.
The mineral world of Prefetia, fully occupied, was the Tau's.
The White Scars fleet had slipped away from the engagement earlier, its departure masked by the Raven Guard fleet's continued entanglement with the Tau naval elements. Once the last evacuation lifter cleared the upper atmosphere and confirmed docking, the White Scars ships changed vector.
The Cyclone-class torpedoes launched in sequence from Adeptus Astartes strike cruisers.
The detonations that followed were individually massive and collectively something considerably larger than the sum of their parts. The first impacts triggered secondary explosions across the positions the Tau had just finished occupying. The shock waves crossed the surface faster than the sandstorms had, scouring everything above ground level.
The planetary fortress, which had withstood sustained Tau bombardment across several days of fighting, lifted from its foundations in the thermal column produced by a direct hit and did not come back down in any form a fortress could be said to take.
Then the mineral deposits ignited.
Whatever specific compound in the planet's subsurface ore responded to the heat and pressure by contributing its own energy to the chain reaction, the result was something that went beyond the torpedoes' original design parameters. The crust began to crack along its stress lines, then collapse along them, then separate from itself entirely. Prefetia came apart from the inside, its constituent pieces spreading outward into a spreading debris field that would occupy the orbital lane for decades.
The Raven Guard and White Scars fleets were already moving, hard and fast, when the Tau naval elements turned from their engagement vectors and came after them. The pursuit lasted long enough to establish that both Astartes fleets were faster on this particular heading than the Tau ships behind them, and then it stopped being a pursuit.
What remained of Commander Shadowsun and the Tau ground forces was distributed across the debris field that had been Prefetia.
The Third Sphere Expansion's momentum faltered. Without its architect and the substantial ground element that had died on the mineral world, the broader offensive lost the direction it had operated under for months. Not permanently. But for now.
For Nolan, the consequence of that decision arrived quickly.
The War Council of the sector had questions. Pointed, formal questions, conveyed in the language of official inquiry, about the destruction of an Imperial-designated mineral world and the deaths of the allied forces that had been stationed on it at the time of the bombardment. Inquisitors from across the gulf received word and came aboard their ships, converging on the Damocles theater to add their own jurisdiction to the investigation.
The Raven Guard, who had just watched their Chapter Master die and were now watching the Inquisition move to interrogate the Primarch who had avenged him, did not receive this development calmly. Nolan stepped between the two parties before the situation resolved itself in the most direct available manner. He did it more than once. The Inquisitors who arrived in the system found a Primarch who was prepared to answer questions, and a Raven Guard Chapter that was prepared to object to the phrasing of those questions in ways that involved considerable quantities of armed Astartes.
