Chapter 1 - 1. GENESIS

Warmth from the morning sun spreads across my face as consciousness returns to me. The mattress beneath me is comfortable, but the rest of my body has apparently declared war on movement. Soreness crawls through my muscles when I stretch, and my joints creak and pop after seven days spent bedridden.

As awareness settles in, the last week returns in pieces. On the first day, I threw up everything I had eaten that morning. By evening, urgent care had diagnosed me with both food poisoning and the flu, and I had asked the clinic to send my doctor's note directly to my boss at the writers' agency, an in-house company under Calderon Media. The second day brought little beyond weakness and exhaustion. On the third, chills and fevers began trading control of my body, one moment leaving me frozen and the next burning alive. My boss still called to ask whether I would be coming in, as though the seven-day medical excuse had somehow become decorative, and I had to remind him of it while every inch of me hurt too badly to think straight.

A flush of heat swept through me on the fourth day and dragged me into two days of heavy, broken sleep. Sometime during the sixth, I vaguely remember a strange sound and a feminine voice asking whether I wanted the sickness to end. The memory is tangled with another call, this one from Human Resources, informing me that I needed to come collect my final paycheck.

Now it is day seven, and I am perfectly fine.

No, better than fine. Even beneath the lingering stiffness, I feel better than I have at any point in the last thirty-four years. As I lie there with my eyes closed, replaying the week, the difference becomes impossible to ignore. My mind is clearer, my body stronger and healthier, as though something reached into the foundation of my being and rewrote every damaged line. Even my senses have sharpened. Sound comes first. I can hear my own breathing, the quiet beat of my heart, and the faint whisper of fabric shifting across my chest with every breath.

When I clench my fist, I feel muscles and tendons flex that I never knew how to notice before. Then a map of my body unfolds inside my awareness without warning. It is not quite sight, yet I can perceive my musculature and skeleton as clearly as an X-ray happening in the present moment. I know I am lying on my back with one fist clenched, and I can follow the tension through my fingers, wrist, and forearm. Beneath all of it, pathways of energy wind through every muscle.

I follow one current and nearly lose myself in it. The pathway runs toward the center of my navel before branching outward again, and somehow I understand that its energy originates in digestion. Wonder draws me deeper until I shake my head and force my eyes open.

A gasp leaves me.

For the first time, I understand what Bella from Twilight must have experienced when she opened her eyes as a vampire. The comparison is ridiculous, but nothing else comes close. Sunlight pours through the window in shades of gold, orange, and yellow that I have never truly seen before. Every ray contains a spectrum of colors folded into the light, including one I cannot name. It resembles the visual manifestation of clarity itself, not transparent, not colorless, but something my old eyes had never possessed the ability to perceive.

My thoughts race. Whatever happened has not merely corrected my eyesight. It has given me the ability to perceive the muscles, organs, pathways, and even the internal scars left by old injuries and surgeries.

"What the…" The words die as soon as I hear my own voice. It rolls from my chest deeper and richer than before, carrying the kind of weight I can only describe as dark-lord savior, dramatic and commanding, yet still unmistakably mine. I clap a hand over my mouth, only to stare at the hand that moves. My fingers are longer, my palm broader, the entire structure thicker and stronger without becoming unfamiliar.

I sit up, and the motion is effortless. One moment I am flat on my back; the next I am upright without the usual protest from my shoulders or spine. "Holy shit. My body is amazing." I throw off the blanket and rise so quickly that it feels less like standing and more like blinking into a new position. My feet have changed too, larger and stronger, and I can already tell this is going to be a theme. Most people would probably check every inch of themselves immediately, but another idea claims my attention first.

I take a boxing stance and picture myself throwing a punch. Before my arm can move, an image of the strike appears in my mind, complete with every flaw in my posture and technique compared with the martial artists I admire. The visualization vanishes when I blink. Stunned, I try again with a kickboxing roundhouse, but the same thing happens as soon as I begin turning my hips, stopping me before I can finish.

"What the fuck is going on?" I glance around the bedroom, half expecting the answer to be that I am somewhere else entirely. It is still my room: the same dark dresser, mismatched nightstands, mirror headboard, mounted flat-screen across from the king-sized bed, and plush red carpet beneath my feet.

My gaze snaps to the mirror over the dresser. I hurry across the room and stop before it, staring at a stranger wearing my face, only to realize he is the same familiar stranger I have always known.

It is still me. I recognize the shape of my eyes, the curve of my mouth, and dozens of tiny details no one else would ever notice, but everything has been refined. My skin is healthier. My posture has changed. Even the weight across my shoulders feels different, as though someone rebuilt my body while I slept and returned it before I could notice. I lift a hand and touch the reflection. "How the hell did this happen?"

The strange feminine voice from earlier rises from my memory. Had she done this? Was she even real? There was no way she was real.

Right?

The sound resonates through the room. It is not the metallic chime of a phone or computer. It passes through me instead, crystalline and impossibly deep, as though a glass star has been struck somewhere behind reality. Threads of white, gold, and crimson light gather across the mirror, curling around my reflection before assembling into an immaculate translucent panel suspended directly in front of me.

I stare at the panel while my reflection stares back through it, framed by impossible light. Before I can decide whether I have finally lost my mind or won the greatest lottery in existence, the same feminine voice speaks again. This time it does not come from the room. It reaches me privately through something warm and newly awakened inside my mind.

"Your initial assessment is incorrect, Mikæl."

Hearing her voice while the impossible interface hovered before me, my entire being froze. The words left my mouth before I had a chance to think.

"No fucking way. There's no fucking way this is real."

My mind was already racing through the possibilities, treating the most beautiful gift imaginable like an elaborate prank I had not yet figured out. I turned my head one way, then the other, but the panel remained suspended before the mirror, every line crisp and impossibly present.

It was the kind of System interface I had read about in web novels and light novels, the kind I had watched appear in anime a hundred different ways.

Except this one was here.

In my bedroom.

With my name written across it.

And resting warmly against the back of my mind was the unmistakable presence of that beautiful voice.

Looking a gilded gift horse this magnificent in the mouth would be criminal.

"I accept," I said, then raised one finger before the glowing option could respond. "Under one condition."

The warmth in the back of my mind seemed amused, and that beautiful voice filled my thoughts, its vibrations soft and gentle.

"Of course, Host. Name your conditions. You say one, but I can tell from your thoughts that you have several."

The amusement lingered after her voice receded, like silk being drawn through the loops of a robe, gentle and fluid.

Damn. Okay. I hadn't expected that to work.

Either way, it was a win. Time to see how far this went.

"Complete autonomy and absolute loyalty from both you and the System," I said. "No hindrance. No moral correction. My life, my way, limited by nothing except the laws of reality, the consequences of the society I choose to operate within, and whatever limitations I personally possess at the time."

I studied the panel and the warm presence behind it, following the distinction implied by its wording.

"Using context clues, I can tell you and the System are separate entities. That means you are included in the conditions of my acceptance."

The warmth in the back of my mind deepened, wrapping around my thoughts without pressing against them. When Genesis answered, there was no hesitation in her voice.

"Yes, Mikæl. I accept every condition."

Her words carried through me with soft, absolute certainty.

"Your life will remain your own. I will be completely loyal to you, and I will never hinder, manipulate, deceive, override, or morally correct you. I may advise you, warn you, explain consequences, or offer alternatives, but the final decision will always belong to you."

A gentle pulse moved through the bond.

"The System possesses no authority over you. It is your power, and it will answer to your will. It may inform you when an action exceeds your present strength, resources, knowledge, authority, or the laws of reality you have not yet gained the power to overcome, but it will never refuse you because of morality, preference, or judgment."

Her amusement returned, softer this time.

"You are correct. Genesis and the System are separate. Your conditions apply to us both."

The warmth settled around the center of my mind like a vow.

"I accept you as my Sovereign, Mikæl."

I grin, bright and triumphant.

"Then I, Mikæl Malakai Monroe-Mercer accept you both," I say, "and everything that entails."
